CLIP SECTION AND ITS FUTURE

Ladies and Gents, we've got a serious problem with our clip section, as you may have noticed already. Since honesty.com started charging serious money for hosting our clips, we haven't found a replacement yet. What do we need?

We badly need an ftp server where we can upload and store our clips, if only for a limited span of time. This server must be hosted at a provider able to deal with an enormous amount of bandwidth (as a complete computer ignorant, I know nothing about any figures), and it has to do it FOR FREE! The bandwidth excess broke down this forum repeatedly with the traffic at the now-closed Archives, and Jeff has figured out that providing the necessary bandwidth would cost about $ 2000 a month! So we need to find either an extremely generous or an equally naïve internet host. Both are utterly rare.

There are many computer specialists in our circle, I know. Some of them might stumble over a possible host sooner or later. Or someone may know if Bill Gates is into tickling, too. We'd all solemnly promise to buy only Microsoft software in the future… Anyhow, I'm sure we can find an appropriate reward for the member who comes to rescue our clips section from its present coma!

BTW, Kathy has allowed me a glimpse into the clip for the new Realtickling video, and it is absolutely fantastic!!! But they, too, have the same problem, and we all may have to wait until a solution is found. So come on, folks, let's pool our efforts! Together, we can't be beaten! Ready, ready, GO!

Buried Treasue?

I don't know how organized this group is although the commitment to and management of this site for the benefit of the community is, to say the least, admirable. A couple of suggestions...

Given the level of traffic on this and Kathy's sites, surely SOMEONE would want to pay real money to advertise here. Conversely, what about an unsqueamish providor having this much additional traffic directed to their site (and its own advertisers) in exchange for the necessary bandwidth? I for one would be willing to click-through as much as my company's firewall would allow - MTP is off limits for example 🙁

Not to minimize the effort it would take to accomplish either of these and maybe you've already tried it.

Anyway, just a thought.

I apologise for the ignorance i am about to unleash upon this site - but....is there any way a community such as this could manage to pay for the capacity to host clips?
Haltickling quotes $2000 a month - this may be beyond our reach - but surely with the backing of advertising and the generosity of some of the more affluent members of this forum - we could mke it work - if only on a more modest scheme???

Why

Trust us when we say that we have looked at a lot of different ways to pay for the hoasting of clips. The archives project was in itself a big test of our own ability to do just that. And we couldn't make it work.

Ad based models don't tend to cover costs. It's why free ISP's have been shutting down. You simply don't draw enough money.

Getting money from the companies that benefit from the TMF is not a real option either. No tickling outfit is making the kind of $'s that would allow for the subsidy of a free download site that would use the bandwidth we pull down.

To rely on the gererosity of people can work... but they you have to rely upon it EVERY month from now until forever. And if they miss a month or go away, you are dead in the water with a huge bill you cannot cover. Most unfun. It also makes one beholden to accept money from folks in this way also....

We'd like to have a way to do it as much as all of you. But right now it's simply not in the cards.

Our suggestion for hosting images and clips? Almost anyone who pays for internet access gets some free web space from their provider. If enough users take advantage of that then we'll have plenty of clips and images!

while the clips are not really my thing (am more a story person myself) I would be more than happy to post clips for anyone who has used up all of their free web space. I have msn and don't have a clue how to do this but would be glad to 'donate' whatever free space I may have. just let me know how 🙂

Just a suggestion from an admitted computer illiterate, but assuming that everyone who views clips downloads them to their own computers anyway, would it be possible to host a limited number of clips for a certain amount of time (enough for those interested to view and download) and switch them periodically? Maybe host certain ones by request. Also, you could rotate them periodically so newer members get a chance to view them, or you could have a section of the forum listing all available clips and have polls voting for which ones to host next. These may be dumb ideas but it's late and I'm tired..my apologies 😉
