My sister-in-law is in debt because of having to pay back her college loans. Does anybody know of any way she could get help paying that money back?

i wish i knew im having the same problem, but because i was pregnant and unemployed during the time to pay back my loans they gave me a Forebarence for as year to not have to pay back anything maybe she can ask about something like that

Hi Hon~Well, I put myself though (working 3 jobs~it sucked) 😛!
Now, I don't recommend it but filing bankruptcy is always an option.
And she could always ASK what special programs are available for the financially challenged~most people don't realize that companies are willing to work with you, as long as you're willing to pay the bill. (since they're used to getting stiffed.) I've negotiated a number of credit card debt down when I was younger and found myself in over my head.

Hospitals offer a rarely spoken of "charity care program" which they HATE us to mention, but of course I still do 😉 I'm willing to bet University has something similar. You provide evidence that you simply can't afford the bill, it goes before a board who basically write it off to charity~it's a tax deduction for them. Feel free to PM me if you want more and best of luck to your sis.
XOXO

Consolidate debt first...it may take 30 years, but it does lower the payment. Ask for deferment (I looked into this when considering going into the Peace Corps, but my student loans didn't qualify) if she makes below the minimum requirement or does not yet have employment. Good luck!

Greg....Depending on her situation and what her major was, a few businesses are willing to hire hot prospects with an added bonus of helping pay off their college costs. So, that could be an option. Since it sounds like she's already beyond the days of aplying for grants, etc., the only other option I can think of is going to the loan agency and being straight with them....if you want your money, help me refinance in a way that I can afford to pay. If the possibility of bankruptcy is out there, they'll usually work with you. HOWEVER, some states don't allow college loans to be included when declaring. So, she'll want to do some serious checking before making a move.

Thanks, ladies. 🙂 My sister-in-law hasn't gotten pregnant yet, so that angle is out, but I will suggest she contact the old alma mater, tell them she simply can't pay the money back right now (which is the truth) and see what happens.

steph, where did you go to college?

I attended Boston College on athletic scholarship which I lost when I decided I missed Cali too much and wanted to come hom. I got my BA from Sac State U...

XOXO

Thanks again, ladies. Ann, her major was elementary education-- probably not a hot area. 🙂

Aren't teachers in short supply now hon?
XOXO

steph-- Maybe teachers are in demand, but she didn't finish the program. She had one more class to take, and wouldn't take ir. Her experience student teaching taught her that wasn't for her. She was right. 🙂 She's a good person and all, but I can't see her in a room full of little kids. 🙂

Ugh, that sucks hon, to have spent so much time on it for nothing. I wish I had good advice but I'm afraid I'm lost now...🙁
XOXO

Unfortunately, bankruptcy does not make the student loan debt go away. It's federal debt like taxes and nothing makes that go away. I'd suggest that you go with hat-in-hand and try to work out a payment arrangement. Some money is better than no money at all. Most places will be reasonable and work with you. Good luck and well wishes.

Tell her to get a damn job.

And how do you know if she does/doesn't have one or whether she has or hasn't tried?? 🙄 🙄

I Pumped Gas...

Did construction, gardened, lugged trash.

The problem is these lazy fucks only think they can get jobs in their specialties in order to pay their bills.

There are jobs out there.

My dear, everyone doesn't have it like you do. I was unemployed for almost a year and I spent every waking hour (and some sleeping) looking for work everywhere I could with little success. I spent nearly 20,000 for my education so I could improve my situation, and still came up empty until end of December 2004. Now tell me, does that sound like a lazy f**k to you???? If it does, that seems pretty pathetic to me to be that narrow-minded!

Besides, I didn't hear ANYONE say she was going to bail out on the debt. I heard someone asking how they can get the debt paid, reduced or forgiven. What exactly are you reading?

And I Offered A Viable Solution..

To get a job. I agree. long term it can be difficult, AND I know at times there are extenuating circumstances.

I did NOT see anything in the original post the person in question had done anything to get a job.

As for what I did. It took no special skill, just a willingness to work.

Just because you didn't see it doesn't mean it does/doesn't exist. Since you don't have the facts that support your assumptions, can't you can find a better way to express your point of view? I'm not talking PC, but some basic conversational etiquette would be great.

I'm not bailing out on my student loans either. To be exact, I'm considering going to grad school soon. So I'll be taking on even more debt to pay the government's bills. Funny, they expect me to pay my debt in a timely fashion, but they can burn trillions and not have any idea when and how to pay it back.

What They Burn Is Immaterial..

What is material is when one takes a loan they agree to pay it back on schedule. What someone else is doing really doesn't matter.

I know it's tough. I had to do it twice, my other degrees were paid for.

AND none of my relatives went on a message board bitching for me either.

I gave good advice, Get a job, if it isn;t enough get two jobs, if that doesn't work join the military.

No, I do not feel your advice wasn't very good at all, but then again, this is merely my opinion. I'm personally glad I never asked for help if this would be the way I'd get responded to. I don't know what years you were in college, but the Internet wasn't incredibly popular until mid-late nineties and maybe this wasn't an option for you to take. It is a viable option now and there are some people who are using it.

This is the part of the exercise where kis decides to agree to disagree. Everyone has choices and you've obviously made yours and I certainly don't agree with them. The poster only wanted some help and advice, not to have his head handed back to him. I'm sure he and his sister will make the decision that is best for her.

kis Here is the original post. The originator requests suggestions for help on paying the money back

I gave him a proven success path, in fact it was so successful it worked not once, but twice for me.

What exactly was wrong with my advice? And what is wrong in advising anyone to get a job in order to repay a debt they knowingly incurred?

I appreciate you reviewing the post although I read the same story. Sometimes it's not what a person says but how he/she says it. You're an intelligent person and knew your response would get somebody's attention. You probably weren't thinking that the "someone" would be me.

I have a sister who works two jobs. She works six days/wk and the money from those "jobs" you say are so available isn't enough. It simply isn't enough. The cost of living is not moving with inflation and salaries are not making the challenge. I ought to know since I just went through this myself. My son is also looking for work and situation is different from mine-it'll be much harder for him to find work. Are these examples of lazy f**ks as you so eloquently expressed earlier? No, these people are hard working tax paying citizens who deserve better than what they've been getting.

And the fact that our government doesn't pay it's bills and expects us to pay ours is at best, hypocritical and at worst, going to bite American citizens in the financial butt sooner than later.

Sorry folks, I couldn't get the last stupid post to delete. Tron, I'm sure you understand how I feel at this point. Feel free to respond at will...........

Did The Government Or The Individual..

Incur this bill? Seems like an individual did. Most likely the debt was from taxes I spent my hard earned money on. I'd much rather see this debt repayed, after all I repayed mine.

No, I did not post with the intent of drawing a response. I gave sound, proven advice. So far as I can see it's fool proof advice too.
