Ok..

Troops, Firement, Paramedics, EMTs, and Policemen are NOT heroes!!. They get paid to do a job. A hero is a teenage kid who runs into a burning building to save a friend, or better yet someone they don't know. They put someone elses welfare above their own WITHOUT receiving a benefit.

While the above listed people at times take heroic action they do not by any means meet the definition of the word hero.

.....I find myself in agreement with you, its one of the many odd little differences we have with you colonial types. I dont think any one in Britain shares this rather creepy reverence for emergency services that many Americans seem to indulge in. We of course respect the job they do and the service they deliver, but we dont see them as supernatural beings, worthy of a seat at the last supper.
