I don't understand why some bands/singers decide to do a cover tune. Almost all of them blow anyway. I mean, tribute albums are one thing, but full-out covers of already great songs are pointless.

All these artists do is butcher them. I like Guns n' Roses, but I hated their version of "Knockin' on Heaven's Door."

However, there are some groups/artists out there that re-create a song that-I feel- is on par with, if not better, than the original.

Off the top of my head, the two cover tunes I have heard and liked are:

"Hey now" by Six Pence None the Richer. Until I heard this version, I never paied(or payed. My spelling blows pina coladas) the 80's original any mind. I also like the lead singer's whispy voice.

There is a small Canadian band who's name was never revealed to me when I heard this song on CBC radio yesterday. They covered that "Brick in the Wall" song by Pink Floyd. It was done in an Indie-Acoustic fashion. It sounded great!

Has anybody else found a cover tune that dosen't suck?

bbc radio one makes a habit of recording artists performing cover tunes. some are woeful, others are so creatively different that they are amazing and give a completely different perspective on a great song.

it makes you realise. a cover is not supposed to be a replica of the original. if you want that - listen to the original.

a cover is all about exploring an influential song through a different perspective.

Nightwish's version of Phantom of the Opera is nice.

Nope, I don't hate covers. I find them interesting. Usually they sound great during live performances, there is plenty of room to hear each note, style and difference. Improvisations are basically good thing to observe and hear.

THE very best cover ever!

Written by mr. Tom Waits and immortalized by The Boss:

Agreed on the GN'R Knockin On Heaven's Door cover. Same with Live and Let Die. Both are horrible and pointless.

I like Nonpoint's cover of In the Air Tonight (sorry Jeff), Oasis' I am the Walrus and Metallica's Turn the Page.

I'm sure there are more but I can't think of any right now. Energy drink hasn't kicked in yet so I'm still only 30% awake.

Oh, and there's always this one

The man in black covering Soundgarden? Ridiculous! Yes, but still...

Also worth mentioning is Metallica covering Mercyful Fate. Could have been horrible, but they treat the material with the proper respect, ensuring that the occult feel isn't lost.

Anything covered by Johnny Cash tends to come out better than the original. Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help From My Friends" is pretty good along with Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah."

Worst covers ever? Metallica's "Green Hell", NOFX - "Last Caress," Sheryl Crowe - "Sweet Child O' Mine," Celine Dion - "Shook Me All Night Long," Madonna - "American Pie," Hillary Duff - "My Generation," any cover by Britney Spears, Limp Bizkit - "Behind Blue Eyes,"

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Metallica - Whiskey in the Jar
Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
UB40 - Red Red Wine (written by Neil Diamond)
Nazareth - This Flight Tonight

Alien Ant Farm? Really?! What else did that horrible band come up with?

I've mentioned it before, but Lacuna Coil's version of "Enjoy the Silence" by Depeche Mode is verrrrrry well done.

Hilary Duff sang a song from The Who?:Grrr::Grrr:

Normally I'm dead against any and all Beatles covers, especially that drivel by Bon Jughead that Jeff mentioned earlier, but Godhead's cover of Eleanor Rigby kicks major ass :whipcrack: Also, the Indigo Girls' version of Romeo and Juliet is wonderful.
