OK I am taking this cultural diversity class and I am supposed to get a friend to fill out the same paper I did and compare the two. Since I live in the boonies and you all are my friends, I am asking that someone fill this out based on how you think America views this. Thanks for your help.

Axia College Material
Appendix D

United States-Centric Views Comparison

Consider this question: What are an average American’s perceptions about Muslim/Arab American and Christian American groups?

Copy each descriptor from the paragraph below and paste it into the table according to how you think an average American would categorize the descriptor. Would each descriptor best apply to Christian Americans only, Muslim and Arab Americans only, or to both groups? In organizing this information, you are conveying what you think most Americans perceive about these groups, so there are no “right” answers. In fact, your table categorizations may be markedly different from what you personally believe is true.

Descriptors

Good neighbors, family oriented, oppressive to women, not oppressive to women, women as homemakers, women who go to work, patriarchal society, modest dress, immodest dress, well educated, undereducated, religious content in education, secular content in education, devout, law abiding, conservative political values, moderate political values, governed by Biblical law, governed by the Qur’an, fanatically religious, religious values perpetuated in politics, religion part of government, male-dominated political environment, political environment open to both sexes, violent, peaceable, socially exclusionary, socially inclusive, socially oppressed, socially compliant, sexist, feminist, strict moral values, moderate moral values, flexible moral values

Table

Christian Americans Both Groups Muslim and Arab Americans

I take it you have to be American yourself to be of any use here? :/

But eh, why don'tcha just make something up? Just fill some stuff in, make it look reasonable, and pretend it was someone else. That's what I do in similar situations and it always works! :happyfloa 😀

lol

I just might have to do that. 😉 Thank you.

No problem! ^^

And I mean hey, you could just fill it out in a similar way to your own paper, because, well... It's quite common that we socialize with like-minded people, so it wouldn't be odd if your "friend" had the same idea as you. 😉

If you're supposed to compare said papers, just make some interesting alterations to your "friends" submission so you can draw good conclusions and get a text of some substance from it. Sky is the limit for this one, good luck! :happyhop:

Actually I think the question can be answered by anyone. It asks what the average American thinks but it would be to to see what other groups think the average American thinks as well....

Heh, well now that you mention it... 😉

Question for classy: If I fill this out, do I have to use ALL the descriptors? 'Cause then I'm gonna have to fire up the old brain-box... XD

Well I guess it as you see fit. If the descriptor fits a category yes I would use it. If you feel it does not describe either group, then no. I did what you said and filled another one out and finished the paper though. LOL thank you for trying to help 😉

heyyy

You are right on Papa Ray! 😉

Some of those categories are pretty iffy. I mean, what the hell does "immodest dress" mean? To even answer that question you have to buy into the idea that there is such a thing as "immodesty" that can be quantified.

And "oppressive to women" vs. "not oppressive to women"? It really depends on how you define oppression. For example, a "political environment open to both sexes" can also be a "male-dominated political environment"...in fact it almost always is.

Where do you go to school?

The point of this exercise os not to clarify, but to see how Americans view others and how others view how Americans view others...

The descriptors do not need specific guidelines in this case,,,

Just go with your gut...

I dare say most living outside the US will think that MOST Americans would use negative descriptors to describe Muslims even if this is not the actual case...

Americans are viewed as being narrow minded by many living outside the country...

Well put Ray. This is to see how people feel Americans view other cultures etc. Everyone is bound to have different views and that is OK.

So this assignment is meant to show what Americans think other Americans think about other Americans who may or may not also be in the same group as the Americans they're thinking about or the Americans who are thinking about them.

Your professor has a weird sense of humour. 😛
