My hair has been a battle for the whole of my life. I've tried everything to make it look.. i dunno.. I guess normal but to no avail. These days I just go to the beauty shop once a week and have this lady spend an hour or two flat ironing my hair (it lasts all of about 2 days... maybe, but for the next few days I can keep it manageable myself until it's time to have it done again.) It's pretty cheap to have it done, but I wish there was some way I could just do it myself. Anyone else flat iron their own hair? How in the HELL do you do it?

Straightening it will only damage it and thin it out. What's wrong with your hair as curly?

whats hair?

something I once had...long ago...

I mean seriously, I used to hate my hair with a passion because I didn't know how to take care of it. This is all I do to take/style my hair:

Wash hair everyday
Leave in a little conditioner
Let air dry, NO BLOW DRYERS, ARE YOU FUCKING STONED??!?!?! DON'T DO IT!
I take like a quarter size of a style gel while my hair is drying and just scrunch it in my hair.
And after that, I just let it be.

It's not hard, seriously, I do it everyday.

As easy as a regular iron you use to iron clothes, spray bottle with water and a towel.

Flip your hair over your head so it's mostly covering your face, use the towel to wrap around your free hand and then the water occasionally in your hair and just iron down. You might need help with the top though.

It's difficult, but it's a trick my girlfriends used to do awhile ago.

I'm sure there's product as well, but for a good enough kind you'll definitely have to spend a decent amount of money.

Flat-ironing is the same thing, minus the difficulty of using the rigged method. Just put your hair between the clamps and slide down. Start from the top and work your way down.

Chemotherapy.

The massive cell death will kill living hair, BUT it will also affect skin architecture so it CAN also change the shape of the hair follicles in the process, thus giving your hair a totally different look...maybe wavy, maybe straight.

Of course, that might be a bit extreme, but not if your irritation for your hair exceeds the results of the treatment.

Want to trade? Mine is totally unmanageable when straight. No matter what I did to it or used on it, it would never hold in place for very long. So, I finally gave up. I now get a perm every 2-3 months, depending on how fast it grows, and trim it myself in between. It's the only way it even comes close to looking decent. lol

Now THERE'S an idea, there! I'll definitely have to try that. hehe I've been using tons of clips, but I always get stuck when it comes to doing that one spot in the back underneath side of my hair. Chi makes a really awesome flat ironing cream. It's a little pricey yet I'm like a redneck at a flea market when I walk into Sally's and see it on sale.

It's really not the curls themselves, I just have unusually thick, coarse hair. This method you described it almost exactly what I do, except I use conditioning mousse (maybe it's my hair color, gel just makes my hair look gross and unwashed) Where I run into problems is at work really. Just a couple hours of being wind blown and having little hands pulling on it (little kids LOVE to mess with my hair, I dunno why) and all those nice uniform curls
turn into a real disaster.
I feel you on the hair dryers. I hate those things, even if they didn't make me look like a glam rocker already, they're scary and I stay far away.
I prefer it straightened mostly because I can go a full day at work without looking like a homeless person by the end of the day. Well that and the fact that I decided a couple months back to try out having bangs. It didn't work out quite well, it looks like I have a red poodle on my forehead. I'm not ready to give up on bangs just yet though, when done right, I like them.

Well... I ... suppose that's an option... maybe. 😛

As for what is hair? It's like a flag for your brain. It waves around and says "hey look at me, I'm attached to a brain!"

I feel your pain, it's taken me forever to figure out my hair.

So for when I leave it curly:

1. Wash every other day. (Consists of shampoo and then combing through hair in shower with conditioner.)
2. Towel dry.
3. Add some gel and comb it through with fingers.
4. Cover with non-aerosol hairspray.
5. Make a low bun at nape of neck in one direction, about a half hour later switch directions.
6. Shake.

To straighten:

1. Make sure hair is freshly washed and dry preferably without anything in it.
2. Add a little bit of straightening cream or gel throughout.
3. Part hair into four sections top through bottom.
4. Straighten each section in about one to two inch pieces.

The curly hair directions sound like a lot of work but it's seriously not. It takes me maybe 5 minutes to actually fix it after it's washed.

Anyway hope any of this helps. Good luck. 🙂 (Oh I also use a Coroliss straighten I got on ebay real cheap and it works swell.)

my hair is quite curly when its long-i went through a phase of having it long last year and i decided rather than fight it go with it, make it bigger!!!

now i have it shorter because i realised in pictures there was actually more hair than me see exibit a

My fiance purchased a $100 straightening iron from Costco and she loves it. If you're dead-set against the curly locks, that might be something you could try.

My hair is pretty wavy/curly, as well. More wavy than curly, though. I hate how my hair curls up everytime it's wet. Like if it's a hot summer day, my bangs will curl up because of the sweat beads on my forehead. I do straighten it every morning to tame it down a bit. It's mostly the bangs that won't behave. =(

Some great hair advice in this thread 🙂

Sae, you have incredible hair. Please don't hurt it! :pweese:

Ditto that! Though I do also "feel your pain..." :grouphug:

I've gone back & forth also....

Not funny.

I can guarantee he wasn't trying to be funny. It really can
completely change the texture and even color of someone's
hair.

I know. But unfortunately, my own mother is going through chemo right now and beginning to lose her hair. Though I am aware no harm was intended, I find the mention of such a procedure in this context to be completely inappropriate.

To keep this post on topic, I am no expert when it comes to straightening hair. But best of luck to you, Saeria. 🙂

My mother went through chemo before as well. I don't find his answer
to be inappropriate though, just because I know it wasn't meant to be
ugly or funny. It's just the way he thinks.
