Do we have any dentists or dental hygeinists here? I went to the dentist yesterday-- my first time with this dentist-- and he told me I needed a cap on one tooth, and maybe two teeth. Either that, or these teeth on the left side of my mouth should be pulled. I want to keep the teeth, bur I've heard some bad stories about caps. How good are they?

I have a small gang of crowns (same as a 'cap' as far as I know) in my mouth and they're great. No problems.

Hi hon~try contacting gig1965~he's a dentist practicing out of Boston and a total sweetie!
XOXO

Hi Greg!

I have a crown. It was an expensive trip to the dentist, but I haven't had any problems with it.

Thanks all, I grind my teeth pretty badly, so that might be another issue in my case. Are caps, or crowns, supposed to be permanent, or do they need to be replaced after a few years?

Isnt it? I need a crown (again), and 11 cavaties filled at 110 a pop, and 7 extractions. My insurance company is going to have a conniption fit.

"Supposed to be" is the operative phrase there. For those, like us, who grind their teeth, you end up having to replace them constantly. Not to mention that they often want to do root canals on each before doing caps and crowns. I needed several teeth tended to in this manner. I didn't buy it...literally or figuratively. I told him to pull the damned things and give me a partial. For what it would have cost for one tooth, I got the whole package. Of course, then he tried to rip me off by never fitting the partial correctly and charging me out the wazzooo for every refit attempt. I finally ran out of money (I had no insurance at the time and was ruining my credit rating) and gave up on the whole mess. Haven't been back since. Sorry for any good and honest dentists who may read this. I just have yet to meet one.

Ann,

Thanks for that. I don't know if I could wear partials, though, as I have a strong gag reflex. Isn't this a delightful discussion for the open boards? LOL!!

lol i'm so glad i have a dentist who doesnt rip one off. i dont have any caps i dont think but my husband does. but he doesnt grind his teeth so i think his will last.

My favorite Auntie is a grinder and her dentist finally gave her this plastic tray to wear at nite because her teeth had become so worn. It's similar to what we "bleachers" use to sleep in...

Thanks, steph, but I don't think I could use something like that, either. Of course, maybe I'm just a big wuss. 🙂

There's no pain hon, it's just a protector. I sleep for crap all the time. I promise you won't feel this at all. It's a little like wearing a retainer if you ever had braces...
XOXO

steph-- No, I've never had anything like that in my mouth. It's hell to get old, as my late father used to say. 🙂 Double hell when you're disabled. Trriple hell when you have to watch helplessly as your mother declines. Quadruple hell when the only future you can see is living in a group home according to somebody else's rules.

Sorry for the venting, everyone. 🙁
