My thoughts

Your argument assumes that there is a set-in-stone definition of "ignorant fuckwit." To you it seems to mean somebody that expresses derision toward certain people groups. I would be more likely to use the term to describe somebody who criticizes a forum admin for insufficient censorship and banning. And I'm sure if you asked twenty different people, you'd get twenty different definitions. So the "banning left and right" would be to accommodate all the different definitions.

Fair enough. Reread my posts and replace the term ignorant fuckwit with the phrase "somebody that expresses derision toward certain groups of people." Since you just admitted that you knew exactly what I meant, it shouldn't be too hard to do.

You made reference to other to other TMF members as trolls, ignorant fucks and ignorant fuckwits.

Actually, I clearly stated that very few people like that ever come to TMF, and the only reason they stick around is because they don't get banned fast enough. I then said that a lot more
members would have to become ignorant fuckwits for a significant amount of bannings to occur. This implies that I don't believe a lot of members are using hateful speech and that most members are not ignorant fuckwits. Is that too complicated for you?

That's at least as hateful and disparaging as "************," and in my opinion a lot more so.

Yeah, I'm sure that's what you believe.

But I don't believe either example of hateful speech should be censored because such speakers quickly develop a reputation for it and will be ostracized by the community at large. In my opinion that's a sufficient enough deterrent.

This is the first good point you've made so far. I think this can work in some communities where there is a voting system to determine what makes it to the front page of the forums. Unfortunatly in this setup it only takes one person to respond and the post is visible again. We could agree that this post is the last post to respond to the_musician but someone is going to come along, read his first post, and respond without seeing the rest of the comments. Then the post is back to the top of the front page.

We'd also be minus the pleasure of your participation due to your repeated use of the derogatory slur "ignorant fuckwits." And that is a perfect example of the double edged sword of which I speak.

If the admins want to ban me for referring to people who post homophobic or racist content as ignorant fuckwits, then that is there call. I'll report my own post and see what happens.

It means both, actually. More importantly it means that THEY are the ones to determine which posts warrant deletion and which members warrant disciplinary action. Not you and not me.

Indeed, but that doesn't mean we can't criticize the job they're doing.

How can anybody be free from judgment when all they have to do to earn it from you is to use unapproved terminology?

Really? Calling someone a ************ is unapproved terminology? I think it falls more under hateful terminology.

"Musician, since you've committed the heinous act of using a hateful and disparaging slur, I'm going to respond by labeling you with a hateful and disparaging slur."

Can't you see this glaring double standard?

So you're telling me it's wrong to call someone who uses hateful speech an asshole. Can I call someone who commits hate crimes an asshole? Can I call someone who commits murder an asshole? The_musician posted hateful comments about people who have made a certain lifestyle choice and have nothing to do with him. I posted a hateful comment about people who post hateful comments. Those are dissimilar situations and therefore there is no double standard. If this were not the situation, then a someone could make a post about how they think all black people steal and murder white people, and anybody who calls him a racist would be using inflamitory hate speech because of the implications of calling someone a racist.

In that case, one must know the goals of the poster before one can play the troll card. I'll tell you what. I'll concede I don't know your goals if you'll concede you don't know the musician's goals.

I don't know his goals, which is why I said I suspected he is a troll. I don't know for sure and I never claimed to. You may have been mistaken because I used "trolls/ignorant fuckwits" in my first post and then just used trolls for ease of reading after. If that's the case, I apologize. I believe the punishment should be the same whether the post is made from a sincerely hateful standpoint or if it's someone just using hateful language to piss people off.

Seriously?? You equate bad spelling and grammar with a deliberate attempt to disrupt the community?? I thought I'd heard it all, but this is the first time I've heard anybody list spelling and grammar as supporting criteria for banishment.

Nope, just a reason why I think he might be a troll, which is unrelated to why I think he should be banned. If you look at his previous posts of significant length his punctuation is odd but his spelling and grammar is pretty good.

I'm not familiar with the musician's history, and I'm not defending his comments. All I'm saying is that we should leave it up to the moderators to determine what to do about other posters and their comments. Report anything you believe to be a violation and leave it at that.

And I believe it's alright to speak up when you don't think the moderators do enough. I'm fine with reporting and leaving it at that when I think something is going to be done.

It should also be noted that the administration of this forum generally doesn't favor public hangings. For this reason, the vast majority of disciplinary action toward any member goes unseen by the rest of us. Just because The Musician might still be around, that doesn't mean he's getting off scott free.

If he's still allowed to post, what else could happen to him? I'm not asking for a public hanging, I'm expecting a simple thread deletion and a banning.

Subjectivity.

It's the bane of moderation.

And I should know, as I've been the architect to the TMF's moderation rules for a decade plus now.

We don't support hate speech. In the case of this thread's parent it was reported, and edited. Why an edit and not a ban? Because we don't know the poster well yet. Were they drunk when they posted? Are the subject to an extreme prejudice for some reason? Are they trolling? Are they angry over something? Overreacting to some media they viewed that caused a surprising reaction? All questions I asked myself when I handled this moderation.

I read the post that was edited as a valid point of view in general content, that was marked by hateful speech. So the post was preserved, and the troublesome parts removed. Or if you prefer CENSORED.

Now, the user has had a chance, knows what will fly and will not, and has established a pattern. If problems continue, then further actions take place.

And to the person who feels that moderation is too light. How do you know? Do you know how many users are vanished in a month? How many hateful, trolling or such posts are removed? One of my philosophies is that good moderation is often invisible moderation. Much more happens here then you see.

Be well,
Myriads

Wow, that's a change in attitude. When it's somebody else posting hateful slurs, you're all indignant that the mods haven't taken action. When you do it and it's your ass on the line, suddenly you're content to just "see what happens."
