Does avoiding the hits mean you're Smart? Or Weak?

Today on ESPN 1st Take, they talked about the game last night between Seattle/Washington. And they talked about Seattle QB Russell Wilson being in the NFL MVP Race.

Stephan A. Smith brought up that Russell Wilson is what Micheal Vick could have been, if Vick was smarter when it came to taking unnecessary hits. Which is why he's only played a full 16 Games once in his entire Career. I know Vick could also have been smarter in other situations, but I'm just talking about On The Field.

And of course, unfortunately for me, you've got Robert Griffin III. And running around appears to be doing him in, if not have already done it. These guys may feel like they're invincible, but they're not. They're still human, and their bodies can only take so much before it gives out on them.

Last night, Wilson set a Record for the Most Rushing Yards by a QB in a "Monday Night Football" Game. Usually when a QB runs around like that, he takes a lot of hits. But last night, he didn't take many hits at all when he ran. If he's past the line of Scrimmage, he will run out of bounds when defenders are closing in, or he'll slide to avoid the big hit. Even if he could have got another 5 Yards.

That's not being weak, it's being smart.

Now nobody on 1st Take brought up the question "Is his style of play Smart? Or Weak?", but that's something that's been talked about before on players that run out of bounds.

Since Wilson has some Baseball background, he's used to sliding, but still, he's playing smart, and playing in a way that will allow him to play for a long time. He's wants to be the guy that can be there for his team for every game. Because while guys like Vick & RG3 are talented, they can't help the team win if they're continuously injured.

Now in Crunch Time (the final minutes), there are gonna be situations where those extra yards are necessary, like a 3rd or 4th down Conversion, or getting in Field Goal Range. But going out of bounds/sliding hasn't slowed Wilson down. He's ranked near the top when it comes to Game-Winning Drives since 2012 when he entered the League.

I'm not an expert on football, but I think avoiding being run over by a mack truck in shoulder pads is smart.

Generally speaking, it's being smart. Anybody who is in a contact game knows they only have so many hits in them. Every time you get hit, you run the risk of shortening or ending your career. I imagine if you talked to most professional athletes who are in their 40's-50's, you will find that most suffer from the level of play they enjoyed when they are younger, not to mention early onset of conditions that don't affect most until they are in their late 60's and 70's. Sometimes, you have to take a hit for the team. That's just how contact sports go. However, if you can accomplish the same thing and not be hit, that's just common sense self-preservation.
