i was just curious if where people are ticklish had anything to do with their personality like people with ticklish feet are more shy or anything? i'm just curious i think there should be a study lol.

In a few articles that I've read (I'll try to locate them for you)it states that tickling is a survival instinct that teaches you how to defend yourself against potential threats (at least that's the theory). So it might me reasonable to assume that a highly ticklish person has a better chance of defending themselves then a non-ticklish person. In my opinion: I think tickling can effect a childs outlook on things when they grow into adults..that is if the tickling is brought to an abusive level..just like with any form of abuse...this might grow into mistrust toward the opposite sex or a certain kind of individual. To answer your question (this is just my opinion) I think a person's ticklishness effects their personality, depending on the degree that it's used against them (or for them if they like it). I don't think that any personality trait is assigned according to ticklishness. Great question!

Over the years what I have noticed is that the most ticklish women I knew were the bubbly, outgoing type that demanded attention. Just my observation.

Not sure, but many of the TMF members seem to be nice and intelligent, so there might be a connection here. Of course, I'm slightly biased in that regard, so don't quote me on this. 😀 Interesting question, saratk! Thanks for asking. 🙂

I like the notion of all of us bein' happy and all, but I've found that the ticklephiles showing to West Coast Gatherings, Southern Gatherings, NESTs, MidWest NESTs represent a wide variation of personalities. Happier and more dour, smarter and not as sharp, bigger and smaller, all tints of skin and various faiths. It's all good, too.

Those of us online have to be sharp enough to log in and use a browser. There are ticklephiles that can barely use email, though. I had two that used to require phonecalls. They slowly accustomed to dealing wit' 'puters in coffee shops and libraries, though.

It's just my opinion, though, based on a few hundred, out of THOUSANDS of us. Not of the mind that this is a significant percentage of all ticklephiles. It's significant for the 2 -3% of folks here,*assuming* all the gatherings kids read here. Ain't sure that's necessarily so, though. Know a few that just don't take the time.

Takes all kinds,

I agree with DVNC. I've met literally hundreds of "us" at our West Coast Gatherings, NEST, SBG, Southern Gathering as well as in my traveling.

I've never noticed any common thread with regards to shyness or personality. There are tall and short, brilliant and some are three french fries short of a happy meal. Some are always jovial and others are often depressed. We come from all walks of life, all religions, all nations, all family backgrounds. The only common thread is that we enjoy tickling either as a lee, a ler, or both.

I think the diversity is part of the fun in this group. It's like a mini-United nations all rolled into one commonality.

Cool post topic...I love topics that make me think and trite as it may sound...get to know myself a little better in the process🙂...I think the fact that my father tickled me severely but affectionately as a child...pre-determined my intrinsic perception of what it means to me to be tickled....I have stated this in earlier posts but I have always associated being tickled by men as a sign of great affection and love....and view it as very playful and intimate(when I imagine being tickled by a woman it is different....it is more sadistic I think....in those fantasies she makes me cry and she is cruel...but in some twisted way it is arousing...don't judge me for saying that, I swear for the most part I am normal🙂... my mother, who was extremely ticklish but hated being tickled with as much passion as I love being tickled....was violent when tickled...and she and I had a very strained relationship....she was a sadistic person with a narcissistic personality) interesting.....
46 and 2's thoughts on a highly ticklish person being better able to defend themselves seems pretty accurate....and as far as where I am most ticklish (my feet, sides and underarms, well those are the places my dad concentrated on most) and my ability to thwart off danger...(even desirable danger..such as a tickler🙂 rarrr....lol...I will kick and use my feet to try and push a person away....(hence the benefits of bondage...lol) so ...what does it all mean u ask?.....(I don't know!!!)...j/k....In summary...I am most ticklish on my feet...I use them for self defense....and since I was tickled as a child in a loving way it created pleasurable thoughts associated with the experience rather than upsetting (had it been a frightening or abusive experience for me I doubt I would love being tickled) Therefore...I would love to say I believe that a love for tickling is derivative largely on ones environment rather than genes but I have no explanation for why certain people can't seem to associate any childhood incidents or experiences with loving to tickle....wonder if there is a difference in origin between ticklers and ticklees in this respect...seems that ticklees can attribute something in their past to their current feelings associated with loving to be tickled.....(Perhaps a behavioral study on this would be cool...)...anyway....ramble...ramble...blah blah...lol

In my humble and experienced and personal experiences...

...people into tickling whether as ticklers or lees they all, except for a very few, and whe all know who they are, all are
Friendly, warm, kind, considerate, intelligent, creative, playful, quite trustworthy and just plain some of the best people on earth!!

I have said this alot and it comes from the heart, those that I know and know me, I am very honored and proud to call them and have them as friends!

A holistic view

Perhaps specific places of ticklishness are more significant than we might believe. Last summer, I got a foot massage from my wife's cousin who is a physical therapist down in South America. She had a very strong grip. The massage was anything but relaxing, it was like having your foot massaged by the She-Hulk. :wow: Yeah. But what I found fascinating in between the grimacing pain was that she was able to read things about me based on areas of sensitivity. She believes that everything in the body is connected to the feet. For example, if the tip of your big toe is sensitive, you are likely prone to headaches. She told me a lot of other direct connections but I can't remember them. What convinced me was that something in my arch allowed her to identify a hormone difficiency. Something I'd recently been treated for at Kaiser.

So who knows? Perhaps a map of a persons body showing the different levels of ticklishness might ultimately provide similar insights.

Well...I'm very ticklish everywhere...a lot of people see me at first as a shy, quiet, sensible person...but tickle me...and that's all blown away!! I don't think there's a type as such...we are simply who we are...whoever that may be...

In my opinion,I think there is some sort of connection with a Tickle fetish and a Foot fetish that is why I could never be a Podiatrist or a shoe sales women!

There is a reseacher named Robert Provine who writes about laughter and ticklishness. He maintains that we are ticklish where we are most vulnerable. I think that this is based on the theory that ticklishness is a defense mechanism to warn us of snakes, spiders and other creatures which might harm us. I must be generally vulnerable since I am ticklish almost all over. I have also heard people say that high strung people are more ticklish than laid back ones.

Maybe it was once true for the species, but it's long since left us as a common trait. Some folks, like you, are ticklish literally EVERYWHERE, where others aren't at all. For others, like me, it's off and on.

Further, a "warning" system shouldn't be capable of debilitating someone.

I've heard that theory before. I believe it may once have been thus, but it's not been so for a long time.
