I find this REALLY hard to believe.I have known many screamingly ticklish women over the years. Women, with their soft skin, curves and naturally more sensitive feelings seem to be nature's perfect ticklish beings.

Uh, yeah, but how many guys do you SEE getting tickled? Don't you remember grade school? I can recall a number of kids, boys in my grade, that got tormented by larger girls. Mind ya, many here would complain that it DIDN'T happen t'them, but it wasn't something THOSE girls did for the boy's sake. They were tormentin' the little guys.

There are a LOT of guys who just hate bein' out of control. Havin' bottomed before, it ain't so bad. Ain't my thing, but a man's gotta be fair to the 'lees that are curious. Would help if I WASN'T ticklish, but like that fine article shows, some of us are REALLY ticklish, and are tops. Alas.

Years ago, I had some correspondence with Dr. Peter Cahusac, at that time of Stirling University in Scotland, about this topic. He was the scientist under whose supervision those experiments on ticklishness stood. Actually, one of his female students had the idea for this theory, and she carried out the experiments along with some other students. The prof himself mentioned that these theories were based on a statistically small number of probands, not nearly enough to give enough evidence. These experiments were only meant to CREATE the theory. Still, he was one of the rare scientists who approached the phenomenon 'ticklishness' seriously.

To his own astonishment, the mentioning of this experiment in a scientific paper resulted in a huge response from the media. Everybody suddenly seemed to be interested in tickling!

I remember reading this article. Like Haltickling said it was a small population. I think it was 34 people. How I remember this number I don't know. I think the question was asked on Hollywood Squares once whether men or women were more ticklish and the correct answer was ---women. Anyway this is my source for all factual data unless of course it's published in "The World Weekly News". 😛

Old Encyclopedias

In old Polish encyclopedias there were entries about tickling, treated seriously, as a natural phisical phenomenon, like itching, or pain. Of course scientific value of XIX/XX century book isn't very high, but they tried to explain and describe the feeeling. In all of them (I read three or four) there was a statement, that children, women and nervous people are more ticklish then adult men. "Some individuals react stronger to this feeling and that we called "The ticklish ones"".
In old Russsian encyclopedia they mentioned a Russian XIX century scientist called dr. Manasiennaja (a woman)who did a wide research about the mechanism of tickling, including tickling volanteeers. I tried to find more about her, but failed. In the same book there was a story of "The ticklers" - Russian sect which believed that tickling would purify their sins. The aouthors gave a name of founders, history and base principles of faith and claimed that the sect carried tickle initiations which sometimes led to death. They described a ritual "mess". Every evening the beleivers met in the biggest room in the village for a "Holy Fest" then they prayed for Christ to come and after eating they lied on the floor "man and woman, bachelor and married people" and tickled each other.
