I think it's different for everyone. Different things trigger different emotions....
Just a bit ago I too had something similar happen... I too ended up in tears... except I couldnt express why- it just happened. It wasnt the situation (what all was going on)... I dont know.. hard to explain but I do think that it can be therapeutic in a way if done with the right person, if that makes sense.

WOW sweetie that's intense! As a pretty "run of the mill" guy, I can't say I have ever had such an experience. I will say that when I am extremely satisfied/happy/content I just become VERY relaxed. I am glad your boyfriend was a gentleman and took good care of you and you found peace from your experience. Perhaps it was in fact what you suggested, you became acutely self aware.
