as to a similar thread started by JoBelle here's one i thought of.

Do you belive in the End of the World and that it will happen? yes or no and Why?

This planet will cease to exist as it currently does one day. That much is pretty much guaranteed. As Moses25 said, when the sun goes red giant, the Earth is as good as gone. As far as the "apocalypse", I have no opinion as to whether I think it will happen or not. I don't believe in the literal religious explanation, but I think a similar event may occur.

Considering the sun isn't due to go nova for a fair few million yeras, I'd say the Human race stands a good chance of whiping itself out before some natural event nails us (although its worth thinking over the fact that we'd be long gone from earth by that time anyway should we survive and thrive).

Over-population, shrinking fossil fuel reserves paired with an increase in its demand *and* no infastructure in place to support us once its gone, plus a whole myriad of other Bad Things that we're totaly ignoring because we're too busy making money...*sigh*, I honestly can't see us lasting for much longer really.

Can't you tell that my glass is forever half-empty, eh? eh? 😉

I'd imagine because the majority of what the Bible comes up with is metaphorical, and not to be taken literaly: It doesn't really give you too many detals about the whole affair, and what info it does reveal reads like the Horoscope From Hell...you could neither prove its predictions to be true or false. As with just about everything else in Religeon, beleiving in it is a matter of Faith more than anything else.

Admiral Trouser's got the right idea.... Most of the Bible is an allegory, because if you took it literally, it would contradict itself in many places. If indeed the Bible was inspired by God, I would think Revelations is the best explanation of the end of the world you could give an ancient society that obviously was unaware of the principles of astrophysics. It's like the creation story; if God had tried to explain the Big Bang to people back then, they would have been like, "What the f***?!" Creation and apocalyptic stories aren't supposed to be scientifically accurate, so don't take them literally....

for me, Revelation and related scriptural references speaks of a time when this current earth will pass away, and a new heavenly jerusalem will exist eternally.

Hmmm...

I presume you were speaking of an apocalyptic "End of the World," rather than the (in my opinion, much more likely) scientific view of a world destroyed by the death throes of our sun. In which case, no. And yes.

While Revelations is surely an interesting read (and also the only book of the bible that promises you a blessing simply for reading it), I have to say that a lot of it must be taken HIGHLY figuratively. As such, I don't think it gives us much real insight into "how the world will end".

I also tend to think the end of the "World" is a mistranslation, because I suspect we as a species are going to have a lot more than just Earth to worry about within the next couple thousand years.

Considering the sun isn't due to go nova for a fair few million yeras, I'd say the Human race stands a good chance of whiping itself out before some natural event nails us (although its worth thinking over the fact that we'd be long gone from earth by that time anyway should we survive and thrive).

In approximately 5 billion years, the sun will have used up all of its hydrogen fuel, and will begin to try and fuse heavier elements, causing the core to shrink and the sun itself to expand. It will expand until it has swallowed Mercury, Venus, and probably Earth, but even if it didn't quite swallow us, it would burn all life off of the surface. It is then a Red Giant. Then, after it tries to fuse an element too heavy for it (Carbon or something) in an attempt to keep going, the fusion process will halt, and the expanded layer will simply "blow" away after a while and all we will be left with is a white dwarf, which will emit some light for another few million to a billion years before cooling completely.

The sun WILL NOT go nova. It is not massive (As in lots of mass, not size) enough to be able to. It will also NOT become a black hole or Neutron Star.

Here's my two cents:

The book of Revelation is highly figurative, but much of it alludes to the same things discussed in three of the four Gospels, known as the Olivet prophesy; Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21. The Book of Revelation was written by John, who also wrote the Gospel of John, and in theory, Revelation is his expanded version of the Olivet prophesy. It requires much study and much faith, but in the context of the world we live in today, much of it seems to make sense, atleast to me....

You're absolutely right, that's why it takes careful study... Many of the images depicted in Revelation metaphorically allude to those written in Old Testament books such as Daniel, Ezekial, Joel and Zechariah and also in the Gospel accounts of the Olivet Prophecy, as I posted earlier... if you look closely, all of it is very much a part of a brilliantly combined thread

Absolutely, although I don't profess to force my beliefs on anyone... its always best to search the scriptures for yourself, and based on your own research, come to a well balanced conclusion

That's because alot of people choose to be spoonfed rather than go and study it for themselves, or ignore it all entirely.... whether you accept the Bible's teachings or not, its most worthwhile to come to that conclusion on your own after careful study and, as was alluded to before, faith

I believe that however the world will end, it will be awhile after I am gone....

But I tend to opt for the Biblical description, and put my Faith in that.

You're absolutely right.... the Bible itself must be looked at as a whole, not a mish-mash of seperate parts. Revelation on its own means nothing, if you fail to take into account the numerous examples it echoes from throughout the entire book. Its not reading for beginners, that's for sure... but still altogether worthwhile if you read it with an open mind

Absoloutely correct! The KJB mistranslated the word "aeon" from the original Greek, as meaning world. It should actually have been translated to age. What we are facing now is the end of an age, not the end of the world. The end of the world as we know it perhaps, which will be no bad thing.

The next big thing religion-wise is going to be a female figure who comes from the lineage of Princess Diana. This "false prophet-ess" if you will, will rise up in England and start a new cult apparently. Given the complete load of bollocks that we've been fed in the shape of religion over the past several millenia, I'll be putting as much faith in her as I do in Jesus Christ. None, in other words.

No I don't and the reason why I believe this is because I believe that religion is largely a creation of man, not the plan of "God" from start to finish. Not only are words like "aeon" and "elohim" completely mis-translated when their actual meanings are vital to understanding any actual truth, but all modern religions are just regurgitated paganism, dressed up in a different frock and with different names for the principle characters. That goes for Christianity, Islam, Bhuddism, Hinduism, Judaism... the lot.
