What I'd like to know is why do we say that girls have a vagina
and boys have a penis, when the clitoris is supposed to be the
female equivalent to the penis. Shouldn't we say that girls have
a clitoris? Not a vagina? It's comparing apples to oranges.

Female genitalia is a component system: excretion and reproduction are separate even though they share the same space. Male genitalia is an integrated system: excretion and reproduction both use the same attachment (pretty gross when you think about it actually). Since you wouldn't confuse the vagina for a urinary tract, but you could confuse the penis with either/or and be RIGHT, the penis kinda becomes all-inclusive.

THAT, and Because the vagina and the clitoris are both prominent pieces of the reproductive system with easy-to-understand functions. The homologous male tissue is either a small set of tubes leading to the testes or the pouch that becomes the prostate...and since the prostate doesn't exactly have the easiest job description in the world, it's kinda hard to mention it and have it make sense, especially because you can't see the prostate from the outside.

Yeah, we guys really are compact little bundles of goodness all in one space.

I always thought the head of the penis was the equivalent.

Another vote for the head of the penis!!! :yayzorz:

Glans penis and the shaft originate from the same structure during development as the clitoris.

Right. The term is homologous, but the glans ("head") of the penis is the same structure as the clitoris. The clitoral hood is the only external remainder of what would be the foreskin (or prepuce) of a male penis...the nerves that line the foreskin are internal in a female and run along a length of cartilaginous stalk-like tissue extending back from the clitoris that can be stimulated by pressing against it from inside the vagina (no it's not the g-spot, which is a different structure, but it can be stimulated with pressure or proper vibration). To circumcise a woman the exact way you would a man, you'd have to cut her open along the length of the clitoris to remove the nerve tissue...which is probably the most horrific thought I've ever had and now I wish I hadn't thought of it, much less told you all about it.

But the vagina and the penis tend to differentiate as the vagina is a cylindrical structure composed of smooth muscle whereas the penis is composed of a fibrous erectile tissue that engorges, not contracts. The tissue that makes up the female reproductive system gets spread out and largely disconnected in males, and there's no corresponding structure like the vagina in men because that type of tissue is dispersed along different structures instead of a single one, most likely the cremaster muscles.

I always thought the head of the penis was the equivalent.

The glans clitoris is the external part that you can see, and is equivalent to the glans penis. But the body of the clitoris (clitoral crura) is homologous to the shaft of the penis, and is quite large, about 2-4 inches long, on either side of the vagina. Like the rest of the clitoris and the penis, the body of the clit is erectile and contributes to the pleasurable sensations of sex.

What really matters is that we guys can pee standing up. 😀

So can girls. It just takes a bit more practice. And guys: don't challenge a girl to a distance contest. She beat you every time. All that plumbing robs you of fluid pressure. 🙂
