Fave Breakup songs

It got to bugging me, so I found the lyrics I refered to in my earlier post in this thread:

Songtext: The Greg Kihn Band - The Breakup Song (They Don't Write 'Em)

We had broken up for good just an hour before
Now I'm staring at the bodies as they's dancin' cross the floor
And then the band slowed the tempo
And the music gets me down
It was the same old song with the melancholy sound

{Refrain}
They don't write 'em like that anymore
They just don't write 'em like that anymore

We've been living together for a million years
But now it feel so strange I admit I had fears
And then the jukebox plays a song I used to know
Now I'm staring at the bodies as they dancin' so slow

{Refrain}

Now I wind up staring at an empty glass
Cause its so easy to say that you'll forget your past

{Refrain}
{Solo}
{Refrain}

They just don't - no they don't (fade out)

by the way, I found the lyrics here:

Another good one

Linkin Park "The End"

For me one of the most painful breakups, besides my marrige involved ANYTHING by Blues Travelers.. I remember locking myself in my room and listening to "The Mountains Win Again " over and over

And for the same reason, (real sentimental value) "Margritaville" by Jimmy Buffet, cause it reminded me of some great times in the relationship

This is an interesting thread. I think we've established that "any" song can be a break-up song if it jogs your memory when you hear it.

Our local radio sation 102.5 WDVE had a morning show that featured the great piano work of the Rev. Billy C. Wurtz.

He has a song called "Just Friends" which is a comic look at a break up. I listened to that song repeatedly following a particularly rough break with a gf in college and the humor of the situation got me through it.

On a more serious note: Hall and Oates "She's Gone" is another personal favorite.

How about a real oldie?

Paint It Black
I think it was done by The Birds

Not exactly a Cry in yer beer breakup song

but to me the ULTIMATE pissed off Chick song

Alanis Morresette " You Oughta Know"

Man the memories, and the power of pissed off lasses.

Seriously tho, during my aforementioned breakup, that song actually helped keep me sane! lol

Gotta go along with Ghost2004 on "You Oughta Know", I totally identified with this song back about 9 years ago when I was going thru a tough time in my life. Even though I consider it more of a "getting dumped" song, it also has to be one of the all-time "angry" songs ever.

Good Therapy listening to it

esp when you are punching things or , in my case , doing MASSIVE kickboxing kicks! lol

Was living @ home with the folks @ the time and they were actually afraid to come down to the basement where I was doing this stuff! lol

Seeker -

paint it black was a rolling stones tune.

the byrds gave us wonderfully uplifting songs like mr. tambourine man, eight miles high, and turn turn turn.

now someone grab my doobie.

Gotta agree with you Ghost, Linkin Park's "In the End" was on repeat for literally hours when I broke up with my ex-

Oh yes, and "I will survive" is totally still a classic! 😀

2 More Sarah Mclachlan ones

`1) "Silence"
"heaven holds a sense of wonder
and I wanted to believe
that I get colder as the rage in me subsides"

and2) "Fear"

"And I fear I have nothing to give
I have so much to lose here in this lonely place
tangled up in our embrace
there's nothing I'd like better than to fall
But I fear I have nothing to give
I have so much to lose."

....go on get out of my life, and let me sleep at night. ooh ooh ooh. 'cause you don't really love me, you just keep me hanging on.....

2 more to add

1). Chicago " If She would have Been Faithful". tho that song is kind of half hopeful/half sad as the guy singing it is actually THANKING his ex for leaving;even tho it cause pain, if she haden't he would't have have found the love of his life... Kinda gives a silver lining to even the darkest breakup

2). Melissa Etheridge "Breath".. that song is esp good for those who have dealt with distance or long distance relationships.
