ok so we are now well into advent - what is everyone's favourite pop christmas hit? doesnt have to be an actual christmas themed/related song - eg 'Mad world' by Gary Jules (was last years xmas no. 1 here in uk) - nothing to do with christmas but a brilliant, haunting song

for me the tune has to be Wizzard (Roy Wood) - "I wish it could be xmas everyday" - I just think it has everything - a musical arrangement reminiscent of Phil Spector, a kids choir and great lyrics - at the end where the whole thing slows down and goes all gospel and Roy Wood sings "Why don't you give your love for christmas?" - simply genius, roy wood does it great live too!
It was beaten to number one by noddy holder and Slade's classic back in the seventies, but i think it was the better song in musical terms and in festive spirit.

My fave xmas song of modern times is The Darkness - Christmas Time (Don't let the bells end)

so, opinions please......

clearly its andy williams' popular 1960's hit "its the most wonderful time of the year".

I'm not big on pop christmas songs, I tend to listen to the old hymns this time of year.

Feliz Navidad, aka I Want To Wish You A Merry Christmas, by Jose Feliciano. I have the CD of that song, and love the beat of it.

ah intresting i haven't heard that one - I might download it- i've heard Jose's verison of "light my fire" and i love "que sera" (not a cover of the doris day 'what will be, will be" song) and loved them.

Porky Pig's version of Blue Christmas :happyfloa

Being that I've pretty much worked in malls/retail for about a decade, it's really the only 'christmassy' song I can hear without having a strange urge to find a nice level roof somewhere and scream until I can't speak for three days

Will admit though, for some reason I never seem to get tired of hearing Burl Ives singing "Have a holly jolly xmas" (no clue as to the actual song name, maybe that's it?), it should irritate me but thus far I still find a kind of strange charm in hearing it each year.

(just remembered, also like The Grinch song......that's a great one to hear at work, inevitabley someone ALWAYS tells the boss "Hey, they're playing your song") :rotate:

very good song...worth the DL.

that chipmunks song is one of my faves but my all-time favorite is The little Drummer Boy by Bing Crosby and David Bowie.....love that song

"Christmas in Hollis" by Run-DMC. It wasn't exactly a hit, but it's my all-time favorite Christmas song. 😀

yeah that was a great duet - i love Bowie anyway but the contrast of the voices was ingenious - perum pa pum pum.....

Mary, Did You Know? by Kathy Mattea
Here Was a Man by Tex Ritter
The Christmas Guest by Grandpa Jones
I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day by Eddy Arnold

Feliz Navidad
Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Carol of the Bells"
Almost any Christmas song sung by Frank Sinatra. *swoons*

This song is on a Stevie Wonder Christmas album, released back in 1968 or so. The song isn't very famous but it always brings a tear to my eye when I hear it:

"One Little Christmas Tree"

One little Christmas tree was standing alone
Waiting for someone to come by
One little Christmas tree that never had grown
Cried as he looked up to the sky

Oh please, Mr Father Tree, the tallest of all
I'm so afraid and alone
Could one little Christmas tree so tiny and small
Light up someone's home

'cause

One little Christmas tree can light up a home
So one little child can find a toy
One little Christmas tree can light up a home
So one little heart can find some joy

One little angel who was riding a star
Cried as she looked down at the tree
Oh please, Mr Father Tree, wherever you are
May I give him the star you gave to me

Then in the heavens came a voice from afar
A voice that was heard throughout the world
Go down little angel girl and give him your star
Tonight he'll light the world

'cause

One little Christmas tree can light up the world
So those who are lost may find their way
One little Christmas tree can light up the world
So all men may see you on Christmas Day

Another song I love is "Oh Holy Night" as performed by Gary Puckett, who along with the Union Gap had lots of hits in the late 1960s, such as "Woman, Woman," "Young Girl," "Lady Willpower," and "Over You," among others.

Classic: Holly Jolly Christmas / Burl Ives

Recent: Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24 / Trans-Siberian Orchestra (cranked!)

Can't argue with that...also love The Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...) by Nat King Cole.
Favorite rock tunes..."Rockin' in a Christmas New Year" by The Fools
and "Christmas Wrappings" by The Waitresses.

My all-time fav pop holiday hit is a song I rarely ever hear anymore....and am not quite sure who the artist was who performed it. The song was titled "All I want from Santa is a girl from Atlanta", and it was sizzling hot on local Atlanta FM radio stations back in the 70's and 80's. It's my fav...but haven't heard it in several years, and have never been able to learn who sang it....or if it's available on CD or cassette.

Others I love include:

Wonderful Christmastime (Paul McCartney & Wings)
The Christmas Song (by smooth jazz icon Norman Brown)
Christmas in Dixie (by Alabama)

"All I want from Santa is girl from Atlanta" (you can put her right in my stocking Santa 😀 😀

James Slater. 😀

it be "All I Want For Christmas Is You"

I second that opinion. That last high note that Mariah hits is incredible

I also like "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid.
