Fire play and foot roasting. Is this dangerous or not?

I've been meaning to ask this question for a while so here goes. I've seen a lot of videos where someones feet are being t0rtur3d with fire or something hot like a heater. How is this not dangerous to the skin and does it hurt? How much does it hurt? Also, what exactly is the purpose of using fire or heat on someones bare soles other than inflicting pain? I am asking this question to anyone but especially anyone who has experienced this either on the giving or receiving end. Here are some examples of what I am talking.

For most people into it, the purposes are primarily pain, discomfort, challenge, and aesthetics. Regarding how dangerous it is, it is inversely proportional to the skill, care, and experience of the people involved. If someone doesn’t know what they’re doing, there could be severe burns with irreversible damage. If someone does know what they’re doing and takes all safety precautions, it is fairly safe. It’s kind of like getting a haircut. If someone is distracted or doesn’t know what they’re doing, they can take off part of your ear or stab you in the eye with scissors, but with proper care and experience, that is extremely unlikely to happen (but not impossible).

In foot roasting, the feet are usually secured in a way that they can’t just move too close to the heat unexpectedly. The person controlling the heat source takes care to maintain a distance close enough for the heat to cause a building discomfort, but far enough not to cause burns. Certain oils are usually applied to conduct the heat, allowing it to spread across the surface area of the feet and also to prevent drying and cracking of the skin. The feet are usually heated slowly and the discomfort builds due to the nerves becoming more sensitive to the heat, as opposed to a big burst of intense heat that would burn the skin right away. Also, because it is a slow build of heat, the person applying the heat can more easily monitor the pain level of the play partner and make adjustments as needed. Sometimes there is a more performative aspect to all of this than it being strictly very painful. For some it’s more of a fantasy and it is just a slight discomfort that they want to experience, while others like to be tortured with the very real discomfort and might have foot tenderness for a day or so afterward.

This sums it up perfectly, but as for reasons to do it the nerves of your feet can become extremely sensitive afterwards. It doesn't work for everyone, but the process can make you massively more sensitive for things like bastinado or tickling.

Unless you were paying absolutely no attention to your sub whatsoever, I haven't heard of anyone getting more than a minor burn just from leaving the heat too close or a sub overestimating how much they could do. I definitely haven't heard of long term damage.

It's fire so yeah, anything involving fire is going to be dangerous.

I had my feet roasted with oil and a hair dryer but never fire. I wouldn't want that ever. Buuuuut the dryer did make my soles WAAAAAAAAAAAY more ticklish. Fire just seems too dangerous and painful.

You're very welcome! I agree with @ @JinxTickles. I'm sure there are burns that occur, though virtually all of them due to carelessness, or inexperience. Like anything else where there are implements or elements that can be dangerous, there are right ways and wrong ways to do it. I cut up food all the time in the kitchen with a sharp knife. The vast majority of the time, I don't cut myself, but once in a while, I do. Though it's almost never more than a minor cut, I'm always aware of the small but real risk I'm taking.

Sounds fun 🙂 A hairdryer is a very effective and controlled heat source for sure! For anyone reading, just be aware that they can still cause a lot of pain or burns and to be slow and careful! As far as fire goes, yes there is a real risk there, but I want to clarify that the fire is at a distance so that you are not making direct contact with the flame–It is the low and slow radiating heat that is used. In some cases, fire can be less dangerous because some flames put out less heat energy than something like a hairdryer (though it just depends on things like fuel source and such). More than anything, fire gets much more of an emotional and visceral reaction from someone.
