Fire play and foot roasting. Is this dangerous or not?

I've been meaning to ask this question for a while so here goes. I've seen a lot of videos where someones feet are being t0rtur3d with fire or something hot like a heater. How is this not dangerous to the skin and does it hurt? How much does it hurt? Also, what exactly is the purpose of using fire or heat on someones bare soles other than inflicting pain? I am asking this question to anyone but especially anyone who has experienced this either on the giving or receiving end. Here are some examples of what I am talking.

For most people into it, the purposes are primarily pain, discomfort, challenge, and aesthetics. Regarding how dangerous it is, it is inversely proportional to the skill, care, and experience of the people involved. If someone doesn’t know what they’re doing, there could be severe burns with irreversible damage. If someone does know what they’re doing and takes all safety precautions, it is fairly safe. It’s kind of like getting a haircut. If someone is distracted or doesn’t know what they’re doing, they can take off part of your ear or stab you in the eye with scissors, but with proper care and experience, that is extremely unlikely to happen (but not impossible).

In foot roasting, the feet are usually secured in a way that they can’t just move too close to the heat unexpectedly. The person controlling the heat source takes care to maintain a distance close enough for the heat to cause a building discomfort, but far enough not to cause burns. Certain oils are usually applied to conduct the heat, allowing it to spread across the surface area of the feet and also to prevent drying and cracking of the skin. The feet are usually heated slowly and the discomfort builds due to the nerves becoming more sensitive to the heat, as opposed to a big burst of intense heat that would burn the skin right away. Also, because it is a slow build of heat, the person applying the heat can more easily monitor the pain level of the play partner and make adjustments as needed. Sometimes there is a more performative aspect to all of this than it being strictly very painful. For some it’s more of a fantasy and it is just a slight discomfort that they want to experience, while others like to be tortured with the very real discomfort and might have foot tenderness for a day or so afterward.

This sums it up perfectly, but as for reasons to do it the nerves of your feet can become extremely sensitive afterwards. It doesn't work for everyone, but the process can make you massively more sensitive for things like bastinado or tickling.

This was a really good answer. Thanks. Have there ever been any known incidents of someone getting burned or suffered any other type of damage?

Unless you were paying absolutely no attention to your sub whatsoever, I haven't heard of anyone getting more than a minor burn just from leaving the heat too close or a sub overestimating how much they could do. I definitely haven't heard of long term damage.

You're very welcome! I agree with @ @JinxTickles. I'm sure there are burns that occur, though virtually all of them due to carelessness, or inexperience. Like anything else where there are implements or elements that can be dangerous, there are right ways and wrong ways to do it. I cut up food all the time in the kitchen with a sharp knife. The vast majority of the time, I don't cut myself, but once in a while, I do. Though it's almost never more than a minor cut, I'm always aware of the small but real risk I'm taking.

I had my feet roasted with oil and a hair dryer but never fire. I wouldn't want that ever. Buuuuut the dryer did make my soles WAAAAAAAAAAAY more ticklish. Fire just seems too dangerous and painful.
Sounds fun 🙂 A hairdryer is a very effective and controlled heat source for sure! For anyone reading, just be aware that they can still cause a lot of pain or burns and to be slow and careful! As far as fire goes, yes there is a real risk there, but I want to clarify that the fire is at a distance so that you are not making direct contact with the flame–It is the low and slow radiating heat that is used. In some cases, fire can be less dangerous because some flames put out less heat energy than something like a hairdryer (though it just depends on things like fuel source and such). More than anything, fire gets much more of an emotional and visceral reaction from someone.

Nailed it 100% There is no form of sensation play that doesn't have risk, especially those that involve bondage. Play safe or not at all. Play safe and all parties may experience enjoyment (mental or physical) from the activity.
I curiously (mentally, not practicing) love forms of sensation play that involve levels of intensity without the pure aim of intense pain. Ex. CBT and ballbusting/kicking grosses me out but post orgasm torture fascinates me.
As you stated, the unique aspect of roasting is the very slow and gradual progression of sensations for the "roastee". It starts off fine and just warm and easy. Then graduates to a bit of irritation like light itching that keeps increasing. Then it graduates to increasing levels of frustration without 'hurt'. Then it becomes intensely irritating like intense raw itching and major discomfort. And the hard end of the session is it becoming painful and then pain to the point of ending. But the other sensations can be more than enough for the "roastee" to end even before feeling pain.
The pleasure for the viewer is watching the "roastee" slowly evolve from calm and relaxed to desperate displays of frustration and torment without anything changing in the scene than the increased exposure (the temperature and closeness of the heat source remain static).

I'm a giver of both, hair dryer and fire. I've done hair dryer way more. Per my wife meka, hair dryer actually hurts more, but fire is scarier to her visually. I do it to inflict pain (I am a sadist), and it makes some gals' soles more ticklish.

Heat play is dangerous, but I don't think it's overly dangerous. Sorry but a lot of peeps are into electro play and I would never ever give or receive that. Shocking some one can fuck up their heart, period. I can't believe people do it honestly. But consenting adults can do (almost) what ever. Sorry end rant lol.

However, some times I see some thing that drives me nuts. Some times I see heat play with no baby oil (or some kind of goo) on the soles. I think that is very dangerous. Burning dry skin could def leave a permanent mark, burn small hairs, etc.

Just in case, baby oil is not flammable.

I would agree that dryer is the way to go, however in my experience warm and sweaty are the absolute most sensitive! Especially if you start using something small and spiky to tickle the feet when they’re nice and taught ^-^

I've actually been looking at using 5 row pinwheels like this one:

https://www.lovehoney.com.au/bondag...s-steel-wartenberg-pinwheel/a35814g65531.html

Normally they increase sensitivity after each use, these are dull so there's no pain, the pins are spread out so there's no skin breaking, and stainless or surgical steel ones are non corrosive (ie won't rust when submerged in water). So I want 2, a bowl of ice water, and a bowl of very warm water. Soak one in each. Then use it for temperature play contrast with the added effect of increasing sensitivity. I really like adding ice to tickling because the human body tries to keep it's temperature within a certain range, ice will lower it but the body will warm itself back up on it's own. With heat once it's too hot it only cools down on its own by sweating and waiting. Plus once it's wet you can blow across it or directly at it for added sensation, and you can do that while your other two hands tickle other places. Also also of the ice slides off of them they can squirm back on to it unknowingly making a 4th area of sensation with only 1 person being involved and two hands.

So many possibilities.

Very interesting design!

I'd like to try this. It is something that I assume would require caution; I really wouldn't want to suffer burns on the soles of my feet. I'd imagine that would make walking very unpleasant.
