yay or nay, from those who've gotten it....

My 70 y/o Mum swears by them. I'm a little skeptical. But, I do get sick a lot and the hospital's director has asked if I want a free one. Any experiences?
TIA...
XOXO

i never get one but hubby does, because he is diabetic. if you work around the public steph you should maybe get one. however if the flu shot in itself makes you sick, you should consider the pros and cons. do you get the flu often? the one time i got the flu really badly about three years ago christmas, my poor husband got it from me, and he had gotten the flu shot. so that was weird and when a diabetic gets sick, it takes so much longer to get better.

I got mine. I get flu shots every year. I get mine because i was born pre-mature and had all my health problems when i was a little baby and growing up. They don't hurt you just relax your shoulder like a wet noodle and a few seconds later after the flu shot needle goes in it's over with. Your in and out.

Fuck that noise.

I am NOT missing out on a fully paid sick day.

After having Pneumonia 2 xmasses ago and now working in a Hospice, I make sure I get one every year. I feel groggy with a mild cold for a few days afternwards but nothing major.

Everything you wanted to know about flu shots but were afraid to ask

:idunno: Here in the Western Hemisphere, we can gauge which strain of the flu will be floating around with reasonable accuracy by monitoring the spread of influenza in Australia during their winter (May-September) :rotate:. Unfortunately, the World Health Organization guessed wrong a couple of years ago and everyone got sick :sadcry:. So I can understand why people are skeptical about getting a flu shot, but I'm still getting mine. :wavingguy

I just started getting it a couple of years ago. It seemed that every year I ended up getting really sick with it turning into bronchitis and such. My dr recommended it and my work pays for it. I have found that when I have it I do not get as severely ill as previous years.

My boss at work had one a few weeks ago and she was a bit out of it for a couple of days but she was fine after that, apparently she used to get flu a lot but hasn’t the last couple of years since she’s been getting the jab.

I have to get it myself, being diabetic. As Izzybooter said, we get sick easier, tend to experience worse symptoms, and have a harder time fighting it off and getting better. Got my very first one last year. I was severely ill the month before I got it (and had been for nearly two months), but after getting it, I suffered nothing worse than a bad cold the rest of the flu season. Well, that and one 48 hour stomach flu bug, but the flu shot does not prevent that sort of flu.

Considering your job, Steph, I'd probably say it would be wise to get one. Better to be partially prepared than to face a possible long and horrendous bout with the flu.

Thanx for the advice friends~I think I'm going to get it! I just hope I'm better in time for the PA party...

Dussi~I WISH I could be so blase'. Unfortunately, the guys I work for NEVER get sick (attorneys~they have no patient contact, unlike me who's exposed to EVERYTHING) and they expect nobody else will either. I get a big fat whopping 3 excused sick days all year. :sowrong: It totally blows. I shred 'em on it every year at review time~" this is what sucks about the company....totally unrealistic expectations..."
XOXO

I got my first flu shot a few years back. The next morning I woke up with my worst case of the flu and kept it for a full week. The following year, hoping the previous year's incident to be a fluke, I tried yet another one. The exact same result occurred as the previous year. Needless to say, I've refused to get flu shot ever since.

I've never had a flu shot, and I rarely get sick. But if getting one helps you stay healthy, by all means get it, especially if it's free, unless you're like Dussicar and want to get paid for doing nothing. 😀

When I worked for the hospital, it was pretty much mandatory. I didn't find it made much of a difference personally, but I don't see the harm in getting it. The only thing about it is that it's not truly up to date to battle the current strain once flu season hits.

I don't get them anymore.

I used to get them all the time in the Air Force (they tried to make them mandatory, but that went over like a fart in church), believing in the rationale that if I get a little bit sick from this, it'll bolster my immune system and I won't get a really BAD case later on. Screw that crap. I never get much worse than a mild cold without it, and I'm always, always, ALWAYS miserable for DAYS after a flu shot.

No frickin' thank you. :idontwann

I am all for the Flu shot because I always get the flu if I don't get the shot. Actually I need to make an appointment to do that soon.

Thanks friends~I was hoping for both pros and cons. I never had one and get sick all the time, I figure what do I have to lose...
XOXO

I intend to start working as a nurse in December or early Jan., so need a flu shot. I went in last Friday & my arm is still a little sore. It takes em 3 weeks to become effective.

I get one every year.

They're sposta be "attenuated viruses", but I think at least three out of the 30 million I got were still thrashing about wildly as they were shoved into the muscle in my upper right arm. I've felt like road kill since I got the shot twelve days ago. A simple, coincidental cold, I swear !! 😀

I'm gettin one next year too.

I think I have the flu right now (yuck)... But it STILL beast having someone jab me with a long, hollow, nasty peice of metal.

If they would let me take a cheese grater to my arm and then rub the vaccine into the wound, I'd consider it. But under no circumstances will I EVER voluntarily get a shot or blood test. BLECH!!! :xlime:

Oh stop your damn whining asutickler. The needle they used on me was purchased (used) from the North Shore of San Francisco, and briefly dipped in tepid water before being packaged in pristine cellophane and jammed deeply into my right arm. How much safer can you get ??

the festering gash in my arm will get lots better any day now, you just watch.

It's a case by case basis. I never got one in my life, and almost never get sick. However, if you are prone to getting sick AND are in a profession with alot of people contact (especially being in health care), then, I would be inclined to get one.

I can't remember

I can't remember ever getting a flu shot, Steph. I think I've had the flu only once.
