Any other folk fans out there? Lately I've been pretty addicted to Mumford & Sons, particularly when I'm in the car screaming out the lyrics to Little Lion Man.

What are your favorite folky bands or songs?

DAR WILLIAMS! I adore this woman so much! I have yet to hear a song I haven't loved.

Here's my favorite

I love Folk music. Beware, you have let loose a monster. 😀

This Land is Your Land by Woody Guthrie, 1944.

Don't let the title fool you, the die-hard Led Zep fans will recognize a lot in this one:

Dublin is often called the party capital of Europe, full of pubs, clubs and Irishmen praised the virtues' craic. One thing you will find a lot in the capital of Ireland is the traditional folk music and make sure you will not have to go very far on the streets of Dublin to find a place to take a swig and jig!

Whelan in Camden Street, Dublin is the center visit for traditional music and folklore. This exciting location is the most talented folk of Ireland's performance on stage at some point. A stone throw away, also in Camden Street, The Village - a place other exciting music, it is well worth a visit.

Vicar road - although its confusing name - not a street but a great place of traditional music and can be found in Thomas Street in the center of Dublin. Prestigious venue which opened in 1998 promises to give Dublin a mid-size venue that can punch above its weight. It presents the bands and solo artists that play all types and genres of music including traditional and folk, with big name bands such as Dublin Ireland appeared at this venue. Other artists scheduled to appear at the Representative include Dara O'Briain, Fionn Regan and Brendan Grace prove that it is living up to its promise to provide quality behavior.

We saw these guys in concert a few years back, and got to meet them afterwards. Very cool band:

Mumford & sons needs a new album. Been hearing "The Cave" for over a year now. Woody Guthrie, Joan Baez, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel... all classics. I also really like Wilco, Joanna Newsom, Tom Waits, and Amos Lee.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Nick Drake yet?

Steve Goodman was all of 18 when he wrote the classic, timeless American folk song City of New Orleans. It was relased in 1971 but this clip is from 1972. Goodman died far too young, at 36 in 1984. Also in 1972 Arlo Guthrie realsed his better know cover, after seeing Goodman perform at a club in Chicago.

<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/AJ0JgqoF2W4?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/AJ0JgqoF2W4?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

I have to admit, I like Arlo's cover more.

LOVE PPM! Saw them live... one of the greatest concerts ever 🙂 <3

I'm not ready to let this thread die. Folk music purists may or may not agree, but if these songs are not folk music I don't know what they are.

Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford.

Jonh Henry by the late great Johnny Cash.

One of my favorites by a Canadian folk singer who was taken from us much too early.

I'm not ready to let this thread die either.

How about something from the mighty Steeleye Span:

It is a term coined to denote both traditional and contemporary music. The music is a traditional part of village life and modern forms. All under the purview of folk music or "roots music, as is otherwise known. Composers, lyricist and all artists are unknown, as the whole village or town folks gather to play this kind of music to go their time as well as age old tradition of singing songs to them. therefore there is no person but an entire society that is responsible for this kind of music.

There are many kinds of popular music specialty, such as:

- Radical Democratic

- Anti-folk

- Folk punk or folk rogue

- Indie folk

- Techno-pop

- People freak

- Americana

That the items listed fusion as follows:

- Folk Metal

- Progressive folk

- Psychedelic folk and

- New people

My tastes tend toward the folky.

Pete Seeger, Little Boxes

Great thread. My dad was a Renaissance man who was into folk music and played the banjo, guitar, and several other strings. This was his favorite song and used to play it all the time. It used to drive me crazy he played it so much, but now I really appreciate it. It's of course, a critique of conformity.
