Another thing, I will never, EVER follow the league, until they change the playoff format. Soccer is NOT American Football. If a team win the majority of the games throughout the season, and has more points than every other team, they should win the ultimate prize. Instead, we have it set up like the NFL playoffs, where a team can dominate all season, then get knocked out in the first round and have nothing to show for it. Stupid.

I agree with you there it almost makes the league pointless in effect. But i assume its an attempt to try and get people interested in it...as all the major sports over there have some sort of play-off system, so its something they can understand.

Hmm Man U and Chelsea, even though its only after one week it looks like these two will be fighting it out for the title - both looked so strong and won quite easy putting the ball in the back of the net at will.

Bayern again won but I still think they will struggle to win it again.

If Man U play like they did against Fulham all season, consider the title ours!

Man U were in fine form and it was good to see Ronaldo get a good reception from the fans. But scholes and Rooney are suspended for the next two games and to be fair Fulham were rubbish. They'll have far tougher teams to worry about than Fulham. Chelsea for me are still the team to beat.

I heard off Eurosport that Rooney might be let off, but Chelsea are the team to beat again...........but saying that I hope some one does beat them.

Liverpool should give Chelsea a decent run this year I reckon, once the team as a whole starts settling in a bit we'll be there or thereabouts. Bellamy is a quality player, Pennant's looking a good buy, same with Gonzalez, and Kuyt can't be bad if Rafa's been tracking him for so long. The result against Sheffield United was disappointing, but I reckon there's still a bit of early season nerves there to work through. The consistency was better last year, all we've got to do is get the strikers firing on all cylinders and make sure the new players bed in as quickly as possible.

The problem dropping points early will but pressure on the team, it happens with the best - I'm waiting for Munich to draw and Bremen to win and watch them struggle playing catch up.

Truth be told I dont care who wins in England along it isn't Chelsea.

It's alot more popular here than people give it credit for. The problem is, the American Pro League "MLS"... First off, there isn't enough advertising, marketing ect... They will need to sign big name players as well... There are rumours that both Ronaldo and David Beckham may finish their careers here in the States, and I think that would be a HUGE boost for MLS. MLS should also consider the relegation system, and use all the teams from the USL (United Soccer League)

it sure is a shame it isn`t popular here but i do believe Giants stadium was sold out when Barcelona came to town which is cool.

oh yeah.......Man U is gonna take the crown from Chelsea!!

See the thing that makes Chelsea so strong is because of the depth to there squad they have quality cover for every position. Its no exaggeration to say that they have the strongest second 11 by a country mile.
It'll be interesting to see how man u and arsenal match up to chelsea when they play each other.

I agree that Chelsea are the yardstick to which the other clubs in the Premiership need to aspire, but at the end of the day they're not unbeatable. I think the problem at the moment is that though Chelsea have their flaws, Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool have the same flaws but in more abundance. Arsenal's squad is looking a bit thin and uninspiring, Liverpool have the customary "form-fart" where they start dropping points left right and centre against poor opposition at least once per season, and Man United are going off the boil. Of the three I reckon (with some bias, admittedly) that Liverpool are in the best position to challenge, assuming they can get the frontmen firing on all cylinders, basically because of the improvements we showed last season and the fact that of the three clubs chasing, our signings have been better, which should allow us to build on it. 1-1 vs Sheff United was not particularly fantastic, but I can't see that becoming a habit.

Also, will all you Man United "fanatics" please get this ridiculous idea that Man U are a big club out of your heads? They're not a football club, they're a business proposition; you don't support them, you buy into their cack. Judging by the main factors which decide whether you're a "big club" (a legacy of success in domestic and European competition, a solid fanbase both at home and abroad that aren't just in it for the success and won't desert you for Chelsea the moment your stranglehold starts slipping, an ability to attract big name players and a decent cashflow) then there's only one "big club" in the UK, let alone the Premiership; and that would be Liverpool.

As for any Chelski fans reading this and thinking "WHAT THE FOOK WE'RE A BIGGER CLUB THAN ANYONE!!!1" because you've bartered two titles back-to-back (whic ignores the fact that the first one was your first title win in 40-odd years), allow me to present you with this slap in the face; Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have won more European Cups than your "big club". That's right. Aston Villa and Notts Forest. And, if my memory does not deceive me, Preston North End have actually won more trophies than your lot.

Oh dear. That's a bit depressing isn't it?

And finally, for Arsenal fans who think they should be included in the "big club" debate: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA no. Go away with your Inter-Cities Fairs Cup nonsense, nobody cares.

Although i don't support either of those teams you mentioned(my preference is for West Ham)
The clubs are big in different ways... Man U is the most successful english team of late in terms of trophies won and they have the biggest fan base of any english club. But i agree with you that they are a brand and people support them because its cool to support Manchester United. Plus they aren't the team they were.

Chelsea are the millionaires of the game right now, they can pretty much buy any player they want and its bought them success in the league. But money can only do so much and they cant seem to do it at the big level, and when Abramovich leaves they will be screwed.

Arsenal are the classy team of the league but a lack of signings and what looks to be an increasing reliance on Henry will be there downfall, they really need to go out and splash the cash.

As for Liverpool, they've been pretty successful in cup competitions but they need to start showing the consistency needed to win leagues. They need to be able to do what chelsea were doing last season grinding out 1-0 wins etc. hey've got the players, they just need the form.

Thats my little analysis over. 😀

That's fair I suppose. I still think Arsenal or Chelsea claiming to be a big club is utterly risible, Man United less so but still untrue, but I'll bow to your logic.

It's nice to see a happy Hammer knocking about as well, don't see many of them round here. I reckon your lot have got a decent shot at doing something this year, Pardew certainly seems to be up for it and to say that they only came up last year they've got a hell of a squad and had a hell of a season. Just unlucky you got the Reds in the FA Cup final otherwise you might've had some silverware. We don't tend to lose cup finals 😀

I've been a Manchester United supporter since the Cantona days... I think I'm a "real" fan. I never hopped on the bandwagon or anything like that. They happened to be the first team I ever saw play in the prem, and I liked what I saw.

Good for you. Just don't try and tell me they're a big club 😀

Big Team? Nah. Just a Dynasty. :bump:

Nah, I respect Liverpool. I agree they do have a shot at the title, but I don't see them getting there. I look forward to seeing how this season turns out.

Loathe as I am to agree with a manc (a TEXAN manc at that :dog: ) I'm pretty much forced to. I mean, I know Liverpool never start the season well but the performances so far have just been below par. A club with ambitions on the title need to be sweeping away the Maccabi Haifas and Sheffield Uniteds, and although I'm fully aware that we are the second or third best team in the league the fact remains that dropping points against the dross and losing to Chelsea is something we do year in, year out. Couple that with the fact that we never start a season well and you've got two big bars to us lifting the trophy this season. Negativity aside, we're still the best placed team to challenge the Chelski for the crown in my not so humble and horrifically biased opinion 😀

Also, the Manchester Dynasty...... something for the Glazers to consider. That is, once they've actually managed to, y'know, fund some transfers and stuff.

I wouldn't say i'm a massive Hammers fan there just my english team, my old man works in london alot and hes in a West Ham supported area so i kinda adopted them as our english team.Think they'll do well this season though another season like the last would be a massive acheivement.

My main loyalties lie with Dundee United not the greatest team right now, but we're better than Dundee so its all good.

Oh you're one of those Scottish football types. I've been trying to get back into the SPL myself since I moved up north; what's going on with Hearts all of a sudden? And what is SPL2?

The hearts story is pretty simple a lithuanian guy with lots of money has taken over the club in an abramovich style. lots of money promises of trophies and big players. They've done very well so far nearly won the league and all last season. but he interferes alot in team matters and its why they've went through so many managers. Theres alot of claims he is effectively picking the team. and his claims of big players and managers has been an exaggeration, they have some good players but nothing like he promised.I don't give there current manager long anyways.

As for SPL2 its basically the first division clubs wanting to breakaway and form a new first division but under the SPL because they think it'll bring in new sponsors and money to them. but it won't. Scottish football has become pretty stale beacause of the greed of the big clubs including mine. We need a pyramid system. and an improved promotion and relegation. It won't happen anytime soon. and Scottish football will continue to fall behind the rest of the world.

Rant over lol

I'm a bit more up on the whole Hearts thing now, thanks to the Daily Record's complete lack of English football coverage and the fact nowhere in the bumhole town I live in sells English papers. To be honest I reckon the problems with Scottish football are threefold:

1) As far as I can see there exists piss-all in the way of grass roots development for homegrown talent, and any such talent which emerges is snapped up by the Govan Gargoyle to go and play for Super-Team Manchester United PLC

2) People for some reason expect Scottish football to be as big as English football, and seem to get annoyed when the likes of Celtic or Rangers end up losing out on players to mid table EPL teams like Middlesborough or Newcastle when financially they're only on the same footing as the likes of Wolves of Preston North End. I think this Lithuanian bloke was expecting that when he bought into Hearts, given all the pressure he's applying to get success. I also think this may contribute to the lack of grass roots development, purely because of lack of cash. The simple fact that Scotland only has about 6 million people in total whereas England has probably at least three or four times that many football fans alone means that the turnovers are never going to be comparable. Also, the comparative lack of profitability has already seen Sky pretty much bin the Scottish footy, and since Sky is a major factor in the amount of money floating around the English game that's got to be a blow.

3) Football in Scotland is blighted by the dour mentality which seems to pervade even those people who publicly think that Rangers and Celtic should be competing with Chelsea in the transfer market. "We know we're shite but we'll watch it anyway" is a common thing I hear bandied about.

I reckon the only way to haul up the standard of the Scottish game in general would be to create a British league, which nobody wants. It'd kill yet another part of Scotland's national identity, it'd give FIFA leverage in the argument that the UK should field a UK National Team instead of having seperate ones from the home nations, and it would literally crush most of the Scottish league teams in addition to being unfair to many of the English yo-yo clubs who dip in and out of the Premiership, as they'd be fighting for their places against what are essentially foreign teams (although yo-yo teams annoy me so that might not be a bad thing).

Yea your pretty much right we need to invest in youth but we seem reluctant to do it. Its the only way we can improve the game in scotland, although luckily the past couple of years there been some really good players come through the youth squads at various teams, which brings optimism for the future...

Also what about West Ham getting Tevez and Mascherano! :blaugh:

looks like Man U and Chelsea are at war now. We are still on top of the league though, only on GD...

I predict it will be this way throughout the rest of the season, with UNITED pulling away towards the end!!

The Blues reign is over! =P

Analysis of the big fours Premiership weekend. From an Arsenal Fan.

Chelsea - Well well well, Martin O'neill took some points off them. i hoped that would happen, but i have to admit i was surprised. Shevchenko again, didn't quite look the part and he was playing in territory that michael ballack normally plays in. cant see him staying. he needs to score some goals and soon. Credit to Villa though. still unbeaten and looking strong. Chelsea aren't the force everyone gives them credit for. if they can lose to Middlesbrough. come on.

Liverpool - Linesman was completely out of position to make a call like the one he made. however the shot was saveable and would have been saved had reina stayed in his place and let the wall do its job. No complaints about the second goal though. Tough break at the reebok but the away form still remains a bit suspect. need to start winning away from fortress anfield or their title chances will start disappearing. but having said that its never too late.

Manchester United - I hate to say it but United were on top form in beating newcastle. I dont care what any united fan says. they miss Ruud Van Nistelrooy. if Ruud had been on the pitch it would have been 5 - 0. but all things aside. Ole Solsjaer, brilliant player! class act. credit given where credit is due. Man U back at the top of the table and showing a lot more strength than last year.

Arsenal - My Team!! Well to be honest we were lucky to win that game. but if it was all evened out we would have won 2 - 1 anyway because hasselbaink was offside when he received the ball to play to bent. and it was handball by Gallas and should have been a penalty. cracking winning volley by van persie. quieten the naysayers that say we rely too much on thierry henry. we've had 11 different scorers this yr. who else can say the same. but on the flipside of the coin. we were suspect defensively. against a more quality side we'd have been outwitted. 5 points behind Chelsea and Man Utd with a game in hand. who'd have thought that a month ago?

What a goal by Van Persie on saturday not sure if he meant it but it was a hell of a strike all the same. Was at the Hammers game on sunday, can't believe we lost apart from the goal, it was all west ham, final ball was just lacking.

I honestly think we can bring the title back to Old Trafford, even though it's a bit early to be making that statement. I'll be gutted, however, if Ronaldo decides to leave Man U for Spain.
