You are so right Rob.I was in Louisville Kentucky the other day.Stopped at a Wendy's for lunch.I asked the young lady behind the counter how far it was to Frankfort, the state capital. She had never heard of Frankfort and had no idea where it was. It's less than an hours drive from Louisville.Sad indeed.

Seriously!!!!! And how many of you ladies get PMs in the chatroom saying "asl" and "how r u" and such?? Makes me want to slit my wrists!! I guess it's the English major in me. I've always been a stickler for grammar and spelling.

In Texas, the teachers spend their days, and most of the school year, teaching the basics (e.g., noun + verb + direct object = basic sentence; 1 + 1 = 2) OVER AND OVER, EVERY YEAR, so that the students MIGHT BE ABLE to pass the state-mandated basic-skills test and advance to the next grade. Of course, they don't use Nintendo or text messaging to do this, so the kids can't be bothered to learn. And, better not expect all the students to speak in English, much less write in that language, because if you do, you're a racist harassing them and trying to belittle their culture. Here's a really good one. My younger sister teaches pre-school. Her class is composed of 3 and 4 years olds. The parents of most of the 3-year-olds haven't bothered to potty train their children. When confronted about this issue, they comment, "Why should I potty train my kid? You're the teacher!"

Oh no! Jeff is becoming the latest spelling and grammar nazi! Next thing you know, it will be the soup nazi, the smoothie nazi, the tickle nazi. Anarchy will reign! Run for the hills, everyone! The sky is falling! The sky is.... Ooops! :imouttahe

Don't mind me. I'm in a crazy mood today. I actually agree whole-heartedly. The net has compounded an already bad situation by encouraging shortcuts and cheating rather than learning. It's time we use some of the many LEARNING tools out there. 🙄

Don't even tempt me! I'd love to stick some of the worst offenders into their own little ghetto of wrongness 🙂

Ok, ghetto of wrongness is my current favorite phrase 😎

I'm not a public member of the Grammar Gestapo but I support them and send them dues money, I get just as annoyed as Jeff and others. 'Loose' instead of 'lose' makes my liver twist and my tongue itch more than anything else for some reason, I loose my temper over that one every other day...:sowrong:

Just one of many little glitches. For example, people often say "I'm going to try and do XYZ," rather than the proper form of "I'm going to try TO do..." And let's not even talk about affect/effect or assure/ensure/insure.

It's not "schools these days," though. George Bush still can't pronounce "nuclear," and he went to very good schools in the 50s and 60s (aka, "the good old days"). I'd say rather "What the hell do kids learn in school?" The answer is "not very much, sometimes." The internet has just exposed all of us to a much wider cross section of people than we were used to before it.

The short answer is;

as little as the parents will allow them to get away with.

We are heading for a new class division in this country, which will transcend economic and racial divisions.
The new upper class will be the truly literate.
The new middle class will be the semi-literate (and vast) majority.
The new lower class will be the illiterate, most of whom will mistakenly believe that they are literate.

It think it's a shame that willfull ignorance is not a capital crime.

But then, I'm a nasty. old, misanthropic curmudgeon. AND DAMN PROUD OF IT!!!!!!!!

Yes, the world WILL stop turning if I stop cranking!

You know what annoys me more than this? When people (ALL Americans!) say, "I could care less" instead of "I couldn't care less". Infuriates me. How can't they see that they're actually saying the opposite of what they mean? They're saying they could care less than they do when they actually mean they care so little that they couldn't care any less than they currently do!

Grrrrr.

ROFLMAO, Ray! I needed this chuckle!

Seriously: English is not my 1st language, but it always makes me yelp to see what some of the posters do to my beloved English language!

Hooray for the grammar police. I ain't perfect neither but colloquial speak is my favorite kind of speak too. What i really love is when new engladers say "these ones" ... hehe, and I know they do.

It's worse than that.

"Libary" instead of "Library"
"axe" instead of "ask"

I'm not going to even touch all the retarded internet lingo that people use. I usually block anyone that IMs me without using full words and proper grammar.

For two weeks at camp, I had no idea what my kids were talking about when they described something they liked as being "Fi'e"

I finally realized they were mispronouncing the word "fire." Apparently, "That's fire," means that something is good.

well i admit that at times i get effect and affect mixed up...what gets my goat is grown up people using double negatives...or pronouncing fish, dish, condition and the like as feesh, deesh, and condeetion...grrrrrrrrrrr
