I was thinking about the situation with Lebron James leaving Miami to return to the Cavs. The whole "Going home" thing has happened many times before. A lot of these instances I'm going to post happened in baseball, because that is the sport I follow most closely, but I know it's happened in other sports as well.
Pete Rose: Whatever one's thoughts are about him. Left the Reds via free agency, and won a World Championship in Philly in 1980. Then, played with the Expos, before going back to the Reds, to not only play, but manage, before his ban from baseball for life.
Tom Glavine. Everyone who has seen my posts knows how personally I took this one. Glavine leaves Atlanta in the winter of 2002 after a decade of division titles, and a World Championship there, to accept a big free agent contract with the then last place NY Mets, After five years in NY, Glavine returns to Atlanta for his final season, and, even though he ended up on the DL at the end of his career, Glavine pitched his final major league game in a Braves uniform.
Phil Niekro. Was released by Braves owner Ted Turner in 1983, after pitching there for 20 years. . Went to the NY Yankees, the Indians, and Toronto, before pitching his final game for the Braves in 1987.
Tom Seaver. Traded away by Mets GM M Donald Grant in the infamous "Midnight Massacre: in June 1977. Spent five plus years with the Reds, before returning to the Mets in a trade., Intended to finish his career as a Met, before he was left unprotected in the winter of 1984, and was selected by the White Sox.
Four instances.. off the top of my head.. where major sports stars had success in other cities, and then went back to cities where they started their careers.
On the subject of Lebron: Do I think he made the right decision to return to the Cavs? I honestly don't know. Some people claim that the Heat ownership were going to shake the team up after losing in the finals. I've read stories that the draft pick the Cavs got, combined with Lebron returning there, makes them a contender immediately.
Only time will tell.,
