Free Virus Protectors

Both of the Kurchman's suggestions are very good. A few others I shall add:

Avira Antivir

Comodo has a nice free firewall and antivirus package that will cover you quite well. Note that you may need to turn down the firewall alert level as it tends to notify you of a whole lot of events, some benign, as it learns about your system.
