Girls, why do you fall to the floor when you're being tickled?

I was watching a mainstream clip with Holly Willoughby and a couple of other people being tickled, and Holly got cornered by the tickle monster, and within seconds she went sliding to the floor and curled up into a ball.

I've seen that happen before, and it's always amusing and baffling to me. When that happens, do your knees just give out on you, or is it more like a mental/emotional thing where you just give up resisting?

I'm talking about when it happens like in Holly's case, more or less against your will, not just because you're a happy little Lee having the time of your life 🙂

I've done it hoping that curling into a ball might help protect me. Futile, yes, but it's like a reflex sometimes. A useless reflex. =P

Its a mammalian reflex to protect the bowels from being eviscerated by a predator,

or a convenient preparation to get laid.

Kinda both? If somethin really tickly takes me by surprise, it's almost like my knees are like "nope!" and start to kinda give in. But mostly, it's in hopes I can somehow either curl into an impenetrable Maireadball or crawl away at the speed of light. lolz

I love it when girls do this because, 1. It means she is adorably ticklish and 2. I can suggest to her how bad it would be if she were tied and tickled.

Just asked Amanda by text.
... The need to escape makes you do it cos if your on a sofa there's no room for movement so floor is next best means of escape.... That's it from the lees mouth.

i always end up doing that just as a way of protecting myself - curl up into a ball and try to escape the crazy tickling fingers!

It's not just girls either. When the tickling starts, if I can't get away, my every impulse is to sink to the floor... which never ends well for me.

Yes, I've been made aware that there are more than a few women in the world who feel that way -- which sooooooo isn't fair, because once I'm on the floor I'm at even more of a disadvantage when it comes to fending off those fingers! What is it about tickling hands that makes them even more alarming and incapacitating when they're spidering in from above?

Years ago my family was camping with another family. A boy who had a crush on me decided to scare my sister and I on our way back from the bathrooms.

Her reaction: throw the candle we had (at him) and run.

Mine: crumble. HATE it!

I have always been like that with anything "fight or flight". Only the sudden stuff. Sudden tickling included.

*dies laughing*

Since I'm a guy, my answer may be unsolicited, but personally tickling causes my knees to get wobbly. If it's too intense I just fall over because I'm laughing too hard, need oxygen, and find it hard to stay standing upright.

Falling isn't my first reaction though, but once I'm overpowered, and laughter keeps me from breathing... well... good game.

...because we're not gifted with (turtle) shell.
