Apparently, after doing some net research on it before posting it here, it is something that people debate as far as whether it's literal or figurative in nature. The Bible that I read it out of actually said he wrestled with God, and that the name Israel meant "Man who struggles with God". I've seen some other places on the net that said it means, "Prince of God". I think there's probably some difficulty in translating words from the original language and finding a decent English equivalent. I think it's also interesting, considering Israel's role in the world today. It's basically bordered by enemies, and it seems throughout history, everytime someone attacked Israel, Israel beat their asses. I had to do some reseach on the IDF (Israel Defense Force) while I was on ship. Their military intrigues me a little bit.
MrMacphisto, the particular passage is Genesis 32.
The whole thing is also funny, to me, because it just happens out of nowhere. One minute, Jacob's getting his family across a river, and the next, he's wrestling all night. Did God jump him or something? I could just picture it. I mean, c'mon. God even tried a cheap shot by crippling him with his divine touch!
