Another Rock question:

What are some of your favourite guitar solos?:

Some of mine:
Ritchie Blackmore:Highway Star (live-Made in Japan LP)
Jimi Hendrix-All Along the Watchtower (Studio Version)
David Gilmour-Time (Studio-DSOTM)
David Gilmour -Pigs:3 Different Ones & Comfortably Numb (Live-Various Performances)
Steve Howe-Starship Trooper (Live-Yessongs LP)
Jimmy Page-In my Time of Dying (Physical Graffitti)
Jeff Beck-Beck's Bolero (Studio)
Eric Clapton - Layla (Derek and the Dominoes-Studio)
Robert Fripp - 21st Century Schizoid Man -(Live '73 -'74 various performances)

To name a few......

check out mark knophler's playing on "sultans of swing" on the Dire Straights album Alchemy (live).

Mark Knopfler..

During Money for Nothing is positively evil!

Tron

The end of the Carpenters "Goodbye to Love."

Rxx

I was gonna list some blues rock guitarists who have solos I like(Roy Buchanan, Peter Green, etc.), but recently I discovered the song "Maggot Brain" by Funkadelic. Guitarist Eddie Hazel's solo on here is absolutley amazing.....for 10 minutes, no less!

Drew

Joe Satriani - Surfing With The Alien.
Eddie Van Halen - Eruption
Steve Vai - For the Love of God.
Yngwie Malamsteen - Black Star.
Kirk Hammett -Blackened

Any number of solos from Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers from Iron Maiden.

David Gilmour: Comfortably Numb....Live....."Pulse"
Neil Young: Like A Hurricane. {The sheet music alone is enough to make your eyes bleed}

There are more. Pick almost anything by Stevie Ray Vaughn.

TTD

Almost every slide and lead solo from Duane Allman & Dicky Betts on the Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East.

Same for most of Eric Clapton's solos on Derek & the Dominos in Concert or the extended CD version Live at the Fillmore.

For an entire album of incredible guitar solos, check out Rory Gallagher's "Irish Tour '74" disc. It's right up there with the Allman Brother's "Filmore East".

Great picks, everyone 😀

Socksoff, that Gilmour solo in Pigs: Three Different One's is the angriest, most edgy solo I've heard him play... simply beautiful 🙂

I had the pleasure of seeing Mark Knopfler live a couple years ago, his solo from Brothers in Arms was simply mind blowing 😉

Alex Lifeson (Rush) - The extended solo in "La Villa Strangiato" is my all-time favorite. Also of note by Alex: The solo in "A Passage to Bangkok" and the ending solo on the live version of "Bravado".

Rik Emmett (Triumph) had too many great solos to name just one, but he really blazes and pulls out all the stops on "Allied Forces", especially the live version where he makes Yngwie look like a sunday driver.

If you like the so-called "slowhand" type solos (ala Gilmour/Clapton) check out Steve Rothery's long solo on Marillion's "Easter".

With all the talk of "Stairway to Heaven" (which is one of the great solos of all time), I was always partial to Jimmy's work on "When the Levee Breaks". Classic.

Good One Dave2112 - forgot about that one. Also one of Bonzo's great performances with that steady thumping beat! 🙂

Van Halen on Eruption
Page on Stairway to Heaven
Slash on November Rain
Brian May on Somebody to Love

Eric Clapton plays the guitar solo on The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". That one gets me every time. Carlos Santana's "Europa (Earth's Cry, Heaven's Smile)" is outstanding, as well. (Check out Santana's "Open Invitation", possibly the hardest Rock he's ever played!)

Here we go

Aside from a lot of previous mentions: Eric C.,Duane & Dickey, Jimmy P. etc. ALL of whom I Must second;
1)Anything off "Shut Up & Play your Guitar", "Shut Up & Play Your Guitar some More" & "The Return of the Son of Shut Up & Play Your Guitar" by FRANK ZAPPA
2) Steven Stills Accoustic Guitar (Ck. out Black Queen)& His Electric Guitar Both; Manassas, Solo etc.
3) ANYTHING by David Bromberg...His Work was vastly overlooked & his flat pickin' is The Kick
4)Bertha By Garcia & the Dead
5) Anything by Quciksilver's John Chippolina
6)Robbie Kreiger from the DOORS...ck. out The 'Post-Morrison' solo on Tightrope Ride

I'm DATING myself again...why don't I keep my mouth shut?????
😎

Without us 'old geezers', how is the younger generation supposed to know about the best music there is? Besides, when in the last five years have you heard a really phenomenal guitar solo from one of these new artists?

I must add Jimi Hendrix's "Third Stone From The Sun" to the list, although I'm sure someone may have already mentioned it.
And the solo by Davey Johnstone on Elton John's "Funeral For A Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding" is fantastic, too.

Hmmmmm.....

1) Eddie Van Halen on "Right Now"

2) ZZ TOP on "Rough Boy"

3) Randy Rhodes on "Goodbye to Romance" from Tribute.

I just thought of something... most of the guitar solos that we consider great are from the 60's and 70's. How about the 1950's? The solo in Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog" played by Scotty Moore is a blast!(from 1956) James Burton played the lead in Ricky Nelson's "Hello, Mary Lou" and that one rocked! (That was from 1961) And of course, Buddy Holly played a great solo in his songs, "That'll Be The Day", "Peggy Sue", "Maybe Baby", etc. etc.(all from the late 50's)

Good point....knocking myself upside the head as I type this for forgetting the awesome work of Dick Dale and the other great surf gods.

Great call Lightninbug!

Frank Zappa has always been one of my favorite guitarists, arrangers & composers. The Shut Up And Play Your Guitar releases are top shelf. Some of my all time favorite playing and solos of his are on the 1970 Hot Rats Lp - Willie The Pimp, Son of Mr. Green Genes & The Gumbo Variations stand out and Transylvania Boogie from Chungas Revenge is also very intense. His solo's on I'm The Slime, Zomby Woof & Montana on Overnite Sensation and Inca Roads & Pojama People from Once Size Fit's All are pretty hot. He's always been grossly underrated.

Steve Moorse - Almost any Dixie Dreggs, Dreegs or solo material of his is tasty. Hard to pin-point specific solos with an artist this talented.

Les Dudek is another great guitarist who's solos were always very inventive. Unfortunately he only released 2 LPs in his name (that I know about anyway).

I was also a big Tommy Bolin fan. He had done such a wide spectrum of work in such a short time in bands ranging from Zepher, Deep Purple, James Gang. A couple of his solo releases were very good as well. His guitar work on Billy Cobham's jazz/rock fusion release Spectrum is awesome. Check out the solos on the tracks Quadrant 4, Stratus & The Red Baron.

Anything with George Harrison playing his slide!

XOXO

I haven't heard what they sound like, but apparently Steve Morse is the lead guitarist for Deep Purple. I wonder if he changes the solos in any of their old classics to his style, or if he just sticks to the Ritchie Blackmore originals. (Ritchie was another of my all-time favorites before he started playing folk music.)

Tommy Bolin's family has been releasing tons of his music in the last few years. If you go to his website, there's plenty to choose from. I think the most recent one was his jazz fusion group Energy, which came out around 1971 or so.

Good call, Steph! The 29th of this month it'll be three years since he died. How time flies. I still feel his presence when I hear his songs.
