Fans of sports.

Were you ever actually.. relieved when the team you root for, fired their manager, or coach?

When the Braves were not doing well, before the hiring of current manager Brian Snitker..

I'm an Atlanta Braves fan, as most who know me on here, are aware.

Baseball fans know how long Bobby Cox was the Braves manager, and how much success he had while he was manager from 1990 to 2010.

After Bobby retired, the Braves hired Fredii Gonzalez, a coach under Bobby.

At one point when Fredi was managing the team, the Braves were really not doing well.

Thus, Braves fans started "Fire Fredi Gonzalez" pages, and chat rooms.

When Fredi Gonzalez was fired from the Braves, I was.. relieved.

To put into perspective, when the Braves fired Gonzalez in 2016, they had not fired a manager in season, since Russ Nixon was fired by then Braves General Manager Bobby Cox, in June 1990.

Cox, at the time, became the field manager, and stayed as GM for several months, before John Scherholtz came to the Braves, and started his long and successful tenure as Braves GM.

Anyhow, but the title of this thread really is, were you ever relieved, when the team you root for, fired their manager or head coach?

Mitch, your post and Mils reply mentioned baseball managers but your post didn't specify sport so I'm going to offer a football perspective:

In 1992 when Marty Schottenheimer was coach, the Chiefs hired Jimmy Raye II as offensive coordinator. While Martyball philosophy was "3 yards and a cloud of dust" Raye took that philosophy and "ran" with it (pun intended).

With Raye as OC, the play calling was this : 1st down- run up the middle for little to no gain, 2nd down- see 1st down, 3rd down- swing pass for little gain, 4th down punt and play defense. Yes, it was Martyball, but it was uninventive, ultra-predictable play calling. There were no surprises, no miss- directions nothing inventive. The defense would stack 8 in the box and we would still try to run up the middle.

In 1999, after Schottenheimer left and Gunther Cunningham took over, Raye ran the same predictable offense and we missed the playoffs with a 7-9 record. How bad did it get? The first Chiefs offensive series played at Arrowhead in 2000 was two runs up the middle and a swing pass on 3rd down. The Arrowhead crowd, 78,000 strong, went nuts, booing for all they were worth. because they knew it was more of the same. When Cunningham was fired via fax after the 2000 season and a 2 year record of 16-16, both Cunningham and Raye were gone. While I was sad to see Cunningham go (he was a hell of a defensive coordinator), there was not a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs sad to see Raye go.

I was happy when the Redskins fired Steve Spurrier after 2003, and fired Jim Zorn after 2009. Both of them started decent, but their teams totally fell apart not long after.

And I will be happy when the Redskins fire Jay Gruden. Rumors are swirling that this week vs The Patriots will be his last game, so the interim head coach, whoever it is, will debut vs Miami. I've defended Jay, especially for the last two years because 2017 and 2018 were injury plagued. But his time's run out. This team is unmotivated, unprepared, and undisciplined, And if the drama couldn't get any worse, it's come out that Gruden didn't want Dwayne Haskins at all, and Haskins fully knows it. I can only hope that he's not already ruined, and that a new head coach coming in can develop him. This is similar to what Vince Young dealt with when the Titans drafted him. Jeff Fisher never really wanted him. Say what you want about Vince Young, but playing for someone who you know didn't want you and never really embraced you can't be easy. Luckily for Haskins, he don't have to deal with Jay Gruden much longer. Like I said, rumor is that after this weekend vs New England, he's gone. And even if he's not, a loss to Miami will 100% do it. So hopefully a new head coach coming in will help Haskins develop. We saw with Jared Goff, who looked beyond terrible in his rookie year, all he needed was the right coach to turn him into one of the best young QBs in the league.
