I read in New Scientist mag a few months ago about a prototype mobile phone (developed in japan, probably by Nokia) that can, through a vibration technology called haptics, recreate the sensation of "A slap across the face or a gentle tickle" I took it to be a physical extension of the smiley.

What can I say.

The obvious aplications are incredible

I cannot wait for the full body suit haptics concept. Effectively it'd be a real tickling machine programable to any personal desire. Think of it. Tickling for any desired length of time with adiquate breaks.

Bring on haptics. 😀

You don't know what issue of New Scientist that was do you? My college gets them regularly, and I could easily look it up.

I can't find the issue in question (typical) but it was recent, within three months I think (however that covers 12 issues). I'll keep searching. It wasn't a massive cover story or anything, just about three to five paragraphs.
