Hardcover Book Jackets: on or off?

I have 'fought' with Bill over this; I always remove the book jackets while I'm reading so that they don't get ripped and so once I'm finished the book will look nice on the shelf. He thinks that's totally insane and the jacket should be on at all times to protect the book. That's crazy talk to me, the jacket will cover all the ketchup and lipstick spots any book of mine will inevitably get...Do you keep the jacket on a book or take it off? *

* you people who don't read just ignore this and go watch Spongebob or something...

Seriously?!
I'm with you Bella! Take the dang book cover off so ya don't freakin' rip it or somethin'.

I take the book jacket off, iron out the creases, and put it in a nice frame. ALWAYS!

I actually prefer paperbacks so I can avoid this conundrum, but when I do read hardback, I don't remove the jacket, because I like the cover art, and I also don't mind my books getting beat up. I like my book displays to look "worn".

Also, as a quick side question that's baffled me:

Bella, how do you manage to get lipstick on your books??? 😛

I normally try to get paperbacks because they're easier to hold when the artheritis is acting up...and take up less room when I carry it with me somewhere. But, on those occassions when I do get hardcover books, I generally take it off. While the flap can come in handy as a makeshift bookmark, the cover often flops around and gets in the way. I've also gotten some nasty papercuts trying to get them the heck out of the way. Owie! lol

OFF!! God help you if you rip one of the dust covers of one of my hardbacks because you didn't take it off to read.

On another note, does it really surprise anyone that Bella is so particular about her books? After all, she'd rather read than work in the garden. :bwahaha::bwahaha::bwahaha:

I prefer paperbacks because they're cheaper, but I usually take the covers off my hard bound books while I'm reading. The cover seems to always fall off anyway, particularly while I'm reading which is annoying, and I hate the noise it makes when you open and close it.

I'm forever holding a book in my mouth while I tie a kid's shoe or look through my purse or something, it's ridiculous

HA!

I read AND watch Spongebob. So Nyah! 😀

I have a habit of curling the page instead of using a bookmark, so whenever I have a hardcover book I always keep it on and try to use to front flap as a marker. Nine out of ten times the book was so damn expensive that the next time I read it I want to be proud that it doesn't have odd pages fold marked. 🙂

Off. Always. Never on. Ever. EVER. I cannot stress that enough, if you make me read one page of a book with the jacket on I will take the damn thing off while I read it.

I don't know why I feel so strongly about this.

LOL I usually take them off as well, but the purpose of the cover IS to protect the book, not to look pretty...

I only take it off cause the damned thing gets in the way....

well, off, but the crappy part is i always take so long to read the book, i lose the cover!

which kinda defeats the whole purpose *looks at bookshelf with about 9 hardcover books with no covers 🙁*

I leave them on.I don't mind if they get scuffed up.That at least shows they have actually been read.🙂

I thought everyone did that. LOL

And a protected book *IS* a pretty book. :cheesy:

You aren't alone... great minds think alike. Like Ann, I prefer paperbacks, but heck, it's not going to stop me from buying a few (i.e. Harry Potter) in their original form. And yes, the art work is for schitz 🙂
