I hadn't even heard of it until my brother, who is a senior in high school, brought home an article about it.
Here are some of the dangers you should know associated with dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO):
  • Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
  • Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
  • Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
  • DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
  • Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
  • Contributes to soil erosion.
  • Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.
  • Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.
  • Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.
  • Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.
  • Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere.
  • Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect.

Despite the dangers, DHMO is widely used by elite athletes to improve performance, in the production of Styrofoam, in biological and chemical weapons manufacture, as a spray-on fire suppressant and retardant, in abortion clinics, as a major ingredient in many home-brewed bombs, in cult rituals, by the Church of Scientology on their members and their members' families (although surprisingly, many members recently have contacted DHM😵rg to vehemently deny such use), by pedophiles and pornographers (for uses we'd rather not say here), historically, in Hitler's death camps in Nazi Germany, and in prisons in Turkey, Serbia, Croatia, Libya, Iraq and Iran, in World War II prison camps in Japan, and in prisons in China, for various forms of torture, by many terrorist organizations, in community swimming pools to maintain chemical balance, in animal research laboratories, and in pesticide production and distribution.

Truth is, we use it every day. I know what is, but the question is, do you know what it is?

(If you do know what it is or figure it out, don't post what it is. I want to see what the responses are for the poll the next time I return. Once the poll closes, post the answer all you want. Okay? Thank you! ~ticklingnemesis)

Just goes to show that ANYTHING can be used for the wrong purposes. But, ban it? Nah!

Oh, crap. I voted in response to the Thread Title (I have) instead of the Poll Question (of course not). I swear I'm not THAT gullible . . . :disgust:

For the record, I voted no, so whoever voted yes (besides HFF, who made an honest mistake 😛), it wasn't me. 😀

I voted yes, but I didn't ruin the joke the way Kurch did.

Two hydrogen, one oxygen in a molecule is water:

I just bought a case of Aquafina Dihydrogen Monoxide the other night at the grocery store. :wiseowl:

😱 I know I asked kurchatovium, but didn't you read the last part of my post?! 😡

Hear I'll repost:

I wanted to see how people would respond to the poll. But it's too late now. 🙁

Oh, and btw, I'm not a he, I'm a she.

Well since it has already been ruined I will share with you all a site I found about the urban legend surrounding an incident.....as you can see this urban legend really DID take place, a student proving how gullible people can be http://www.snopes.com/toxins/dhmo.htm

Thanks for that. It's quite disturbing to me that out of fifty ninth-grade students, only one recognized that DHMO is just plain old water. And the part at the end about Aliso Viejo (which is near where I live) and its city council almost voting on this shows that some adults are almost as gullible as schoolchildren. But then, the state of scientific education in America is worse than that of many other countries (especially those in Europe and Asia), so I'm not surprised. 🙁

Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.

Although it can, in sufficient quantities, kill you. Hyponatremia, anyone?

Bad, Kurch, bad. XD Should've been paying attention. 😛

I always thought ticklingnemesis was a guy, too. The little siggy picture shows what looks to me like a male hand tickling a female underarm. What a delight to discover yet another female ler in the community. Women who tickle are what make life most interesting for this ticklish guy. 😀

don't let the sig fool ya, drew70. that's what appeared after i took that quiz for what kind of tickler i am. if i could alter the pic to have the hand look more feminine, i would.

btw, here's a little fact: Nemesis is the Greek Goddess of Retribution.

but oh, i can understand why you'd think i was a guy. sometimes screennames or other things can be misleading. 😀
