....can anyone of you guys help me out? I have been having puter trouble for quite a while now but it seems to be getting worse.

I have Norton anti virus and have done no end of scans, also "Ad-aware" many scans, and also "Trend house call" many scans as well, but I can not clear the problem.

After I have rebooted, and leave the machine standing for a few minutes I look at the system monitor and its showing my processor screaming away at 100% capacity when its not (apparently) doing anything.

It seems to start doing this without even being connected to the internet.

After half an hour or so the whole machine just slows down and you can barely use it to type, and then you have to reboot.

Am I going to have to format the system? if so, what do i have to do to save stuff?

Help!!!

Poor little machine. I bet it's trying to make up with me for the idiotic deeds you made it do against your better ...........judgements.

Ah, karma. :santasmil Merry Christmas Santa, and bring the prat a new machine along with a guide to appropriate online behavior. :zzzzz:

Red!

Just press ctrl+alt+delete to see what´s happening!

Check wich aplications and/or processes are eating up your processor.

You should quickly find out the guilty/s and maybe you can just turn that process of or make him inactive, you just need to right-click on it and see the options....try shuting the process down, if it stays there, try to make him inactive. Then reboot and see if the damn thing is still out there eating your processor.

This would be the most easy way of dealing with that kind of problem. I have used it on my machine with great results.

Of course you might want to make a general format as to clear you system of any files who should not be there.

Red, maybe you need to clean your registry. Have you got the "Regclean" program? It's a useful little thingy. Download here:

http://www.download.com/3000-2094-881470.html?tag=list

Another possible source of irritation are scheduled tasks which perform in the background. Open the folder "Scheduled Tasks" on your desktop and look which ones you really need.

Hopefully this (or nenezinho's) advice helps. Otherwise you'll really have to re-format your hard drive. Get hold of a CD burner and save your files on CD-ROM beforehand to be on the safe side.

When you re-format your comp, partition your hard drive. That saves you the pain of losing all files when your Windows system plays bonkers again. I needed help to do that, it's not easy for computer ignorants like me... 😉

Dam!!!....

....no joy with the reg clean, I thought it was fixed for a while, but then off it went again!

I need more info on the is cont/alt/delete proceedure, how do i know which programmes to shut down? what happenes if i shut the wrong one down?

Dont forget you are talking to a vertual retard when it comes to puter speak.

Use comon sense Red!

Turn the pc on, then just keep it on without turning any program!

Then press ctrl+alt+del and watch wat´s wrong. Considering the kind of behaviour you described, I expect you should see pretty clearly the guilty cause you´ll see some process using like....50% or more of the processor (hint: watch the process not the aplications cause many things would not appear has apllications). And if you just turned your pc on, nothing should be eating up so much! even anti-virus aren´t that heavy and if your puter was working well till some time ago, we should conclude your anti-virus, firewalls and all that werent that heavy.

So...just tell me, don´t you see something eating up a lot of the processor? if you can see it than you´ve got it!

By the way...some Peer-to-Peer software is known to create the kind of trouble your into! I´ve had one version of Imesh wish activated some process in my pc wich can never be sent away and eats up all the processor. I was still able to change it to inactive and now it´s allways around but it does no harm. Obviously I´ve evolved and no longer have Imesh...but the damn process is still there like a ghost, an inactive one however.

So, watch the cpu percentage your processes are using and if you´re still in doubt just write down those who seem guiltys and then write them here in the TMF. Hopefully we should be able to give you assurance on what they are and the dangers of de-activating them.

Nene.........

....when I press cnt/alt/delete all i get is a list of programmes with no indication as to which is running and which is not. I dont see anything that indicates levels of processor usage.

This is what is shows.....

Explorer
Creative Launcher
Ccapp
Servicelayer
Ncltray
Lvcoms
Dslegent
Gsicon
Mediadet
Ctnotify
Systray
Speedkey

but as i say it is just a list with no usage indication.

Re: Nene.........

When you press cnt/alt/delete, you are getting the Application view, there is a tab at the top this program called "Processes",
Click that tab and then whatever program is running at 100% will be seen along with ANY process or program that is running.

Have you tried a program called SpySweeper 3.0!
Very good spyware killer, free to try, $30 to get updates.

Also these 3 "Apps" Lvcoms, Dslegent, Gsicon look suspicious to me

Good luck!

I don't know if this will help or not....

But when running virus scans and spyware scans, if something is found, make sure you turn off your system restore before getting rid of it and rebooting.

Many times, if system restore is on, the computer will revert right back to its regular settings, and the virus/spyware will be back.

For tips on all things computer related... a wonderful site (and radio show)

www.komando.com

Kim Komando is awesome with advise on how to safeguard and repair computers. Also, she offers links to a lot of sites that offer free and effective firewalls, spyware killers, pop up blockers... and more.

No... LOL I don't work for her.

FYI. Lvcoms is usually a file related to a webcam. Gsicon is a DSL modem monitor program. I have no idea what dslegent is.

Well....we can already see this guy has a lot of things running there! lol

But Red!

When you press cnt/alt/delete, you are getting the Application view, there is a tab at the top this program called "Processes",

this was what I´ve been telling you to look at. You were pretty close when you saw the aplications.
Watch those processes and see if any of them is eating a lot of the processor. You should see a list of processes with the cpu percentage that they are currently using.

By the way, you can turn of pretty much any apllication if you wish to try. The worst thing that can happen is you´ll need to go to the program you turned of and run it again to become active. If you turn of taskmanager your pc can shut of imediately....but no reason to alarm! you will be able to restart. Just play with these things as soon as you turn the pc on. I´m recomending this simply to prevent the loosing of unsaved changes and also so that you can see better wich process is eating your pc when you´re not doing anything.

Spybot

You may want to try running Spybot. It is free like adaware and often finds things adaware misses.

Also a program called Hijack This will show you many things running on your system that do not show up when you ctrl/alt/del

What operating syatem are you running red? XP, 2000, Me, 98???? Anyhow, here are some quick things to check/do. First, cleanup your "C" drive by removing all the temporary internet files. To do this go to your start button and follow the flow chart:

start>>>all programs>>>accessories>>>system tools>>>disk cleanup

Select your "c" drive and press ok. Your machine will then calculate how much space it can free up. When it is done it will show you how much you can safely delete. Click ok to do this. It will let you know when you are done.

Next, let's get rid of those pesky "start up and running in the background even though you don't need them" programs. Click your start button then click "RUN" and type in MSCONFIG

Then click OK. You will then see a popup with tabs at the top. Choose the one that says "Startup" ...you will then see a list of all the programs that start running every time you turn on your computer. I would uncheck all of them except the ones that directly point to your WINDOWS folder...you will see the filepath's next to each choice. (IE: C:\WINDOWS) The ones that usually are doing the hogging would have this filepath: C:\Program Files

Also leave alone anything that says something like sys32 or dll (dynamic link files) for they might be crutial to your system performing properly. After you have unchecked what you don't need click APPLY. Then shut down and restart your computer.

If this does not help, also try removing uneccesary programs from your computer. To do this, go again to your start button, then click MY Computer, Then Control Panel. Then selsct ADD/REMOVE Programs. You will then see a list of all programs installed on your computer. When you click on one, it should tell you how often you use that particular program. If you don't use a certain program much anymore or not at all, get rid of it now!!! There are alot of programs that can cause conflict with crucial files in your computer that help things to stay running smoothly...happens all the time. Also then run a defrag...it takes a bit but will put clusters of programs on your computer back in order. Get there by going the same route as you used to get to system tools!

If this all fails, you need to do a clean wipe of your hard drive (called an F-disk to some), re-partition your computer and reinstall your operating system. This will take your computer back to pretty much brand new. You can find out how to do this by doing a search on yahoo. Type in something like "Nuking a Computer" and you should have plenty of places to read on it. All computers are different in this area and it also depends on which OS you are currentley running, so look for information specific to what you have. Some places even have a "nuke" download so you can put it on floppy disk. Then when you start up your computer and it says "press F8" to go to setup, you will do that, go into the BIOS section and change the boot order on your computer. Most computers are set to boot from the "C" drive which is where windows resides. You will change the order so it boots from Drive "A" which is your floppy disk. Then turn off your computer after you have changed it (BTW...you will use your arrow keys and enter button while in the bios as the mouse does not function in there), insert the floppy disk you downloaded to off the internet and then re-boot (re-start) your computer. It will then provide instruction as to what to do usually. Remember to have your OS installation CD handy and the serial number for when you get to re-install. Also, when you do go to reinstall you will either have to insert the CD and do a command prompt (the mode the computer will be in while the floppy disk is doing it's thing) of D:\setup (the letter of your CD drive) OR you will have to shut down the computer again, restart, go back into the BIOS section and change your boot order again to where the computer boots from the CD-ROM first. Then do a restart and the new installation disk should prompt you with instructions. Hope some of this helps bro.

peace out,
daddy

Thanks Daddy..........

....plenty of food for thought for me! might take me a while to get my head round that lot!!

I have defragged and have emptied temp files and cookies, but it has not made any difference. Have run three different virus scan programmes plus "spybot" but they all tell me I have the cleanest puter outside the pentagon!

I am running Windows ME if that helps any.

I feel I may well have to go for the year zero option.

Thanks for the "hijack" tip jason, will lookin to it.

Nene...I still cant quite find the item you are trying to get me to find, is it something that "ME" does not have?
