I have a question that relates to this though. For the more computer savvy among us. Is there a way to password protect a certain folder on your computer? Like, make it so you have to have a password to access a specific folder in My Documents? This could come in handy for FAR more than just tickling videos.
Well there is one way to do this, but it may not hide things well from other computer savvy folks. Altho they might have to know what they are looking for...
Please follow this closely, and read all if it before trying this -
On your desktop, create a folder and name it as you want, BUT make sure it is a name you will remember, exactly. In this folder, place all the content you want hidden.
Now, open the "My computer" and it will show all the drives and some folders.
Now, move private folder to the root of the C: drive by dragging it and dropping. You can access the C: drive by clicking on "my computer", and clicking (C: ) [it will probably have another name attached like presario or whatever type of computer you have but it WILL indicate C:] it will say something about the contents being hidden, but click to show them anyways.
NOW, right click your new folder and hit "properties" and on the attributes, check "hidden" and then click "apply". It may ask if you want to hide all the subfolders and files, but you do not want to, just "Apply changes to this folder only" and hit "ok". More about this below.
The folder will go light colored and maybe disappear right away.
To make sure your folder is hidden, click out of the "My Computer" window, and get back into the C: drive and look for you folder. If it is hidden, you will not see it.
Now here is how to unhide the folder for your use -
Open "command prompt" or DOS [depending on your O.S.], it can be found under Start, all programs, accessories. it has a black looking icon.
Once opened, keep typing this exactly on the command line - "cd.." without the quotations, and hit the enter key. Do this until it gets to the C:\> along with flashing curser
On this line, type this exactly
attrib foldername -h
Foldername will be the name of the file or folder you have hidden. REMEMBER THE NAME EXACTLY! Now click the X on the command prompt window to shut it down.
NOW, go back the the root of the C: drive and you will find your folder of goodies. Folders are listed alphabetically.
Once you have finished "enjoying" the contents of the folder, you just hide the folder again like I explained before.
Advice - practice this procedure with a fake folder, one you created just for practice so if you lose it, no big deal. Once you are confident, then you can hide the actual folder.
DO NOT mess with the other folders on the C: drive, they have important things in them. Do not forget the name of your folder, you will need to type it exactly to retrieve it.
And when I said only to hide the folder and NOT the subfolders, hit is cause if you hide everything within the folder, you will have a hell of a time finding them as you will need to unhide ALL the subfolders and files.
And in the command prompt/DOS, do not experiment with commands if you do not know what you are doing. Don't guess or "imagine"..
Problem - if someone does a "search" and types even a couple letters of the folder name, AND has "search hidden files and folders" then it will come up.
Like aa search for som will find a folder called something, sommes, anything that starts with some, but a search for somy will not work, cause it looks for strings of letters.
Here is a clever way around that -
Make the first letter or two something non english like one or more of these letters - à ù è ç î They are NOT the same as a, u, e, c, or î.
Here is how to produce those -
à - Hold down ALT and type 133 let go of ALT
ù - ALT and 151
è - ALT and 0232
ç - ALT and 0231
î - ALT and 140
You could call the folder ètîçkling or something. Long as the first letter is a non-English letter. Rename all files in this folder with a non-eng letter. This will cause those files to not turn up in a search.[Remember, only the folder is hidden]
Well, that was a short read. Practice and let me know if you have any questions. I know it seems complicated, but practice. Use this at your own risk, and keep in mind that a computer savvy person could find it, so if you have illegal content that you would not want your local law enforcement to see, this will not hide it from an expert who can find anything.
MAKE SURE you have this down pat before using it on folders you do not want lost.
