Hooray! We could have TWO SUNS in 2012!

Sweet!!! This is when we'll finally get our super powers!!!

Seriously though, it's pretty cool. And it's somewhat mind boggling to think that even though we're just getting this info, since Betelgeuse is 1300 light years away, all that has happened long ago. It'll be a historical event on many different levels.

And the Mayans just keep getting righter and righter... :panic:

I don't know about you, boys, but I'll be in my UV-proof bunker, screaming obscenities at the night sky and sobbing in my bottle. :drunktype:

My favorite quote is this one from the Time article:

And while the celestial event could take place before the end of 2012, it may not occur for a million years.

One of the two.

THAT COULD BE BAD!

Imagine the effects of Global Warming causing ice to melt, and oceans to rise and flood coastal areas. I have this wary feeling about 2012.

Lord I hope it's the end of the world. That way I won't feel as bad for quitting my job.

We're too far away from Betelgeuse for the heat to affect us. Only the light can reach us.

^Twenty four hours of daylight will certainly cause some changes.^

Not climactic. There won't be additional heat, just light. While that may make people a little wiggy from 24 hours of light, it shouldn't affect the planet's climate at all.

Like the article says, it may not even happen in 2012. We might be dead when it does.

Ok, to set the record straight, a back of the envelope calculation puts the energy received by the Earth to be about 0.25% of what we receive from the Sun in the case of Betelgeuse going supernova. Hardly a cause for panic. It'll be as bright as the Sun, except it's concentrated to a star-like point in the sky so don't expect to be be turning off your headlights at night because of it.

so I guess it will be twice as hot then....that's nice, whoever tans can be completely crispy in about 20 minutes...LMAO 🙄

I think this'll be interesting! Apparently, the particles we're all gonna be showered with are beneficial. I don't know what 24 hours of light for several months will do to our circadian rhythms, but I'm sure I'll find a way to sleep. :zzzzz:

We are supposed to get some bad solar flares too around that time. will just have to wait and see.

Just as long as we don't experience a Gamma Ray Burst.

That won't happen its poles don't face us.

Bad article. It's thought it might go supernova as early as the next thousand years, 2012 is just them trying to fit in the doomsday stuff. It may have already exploded but the light hasn't reached us yet.

When it does explode, it'll be bright enough to be seen during the day and be as bright if not brighter than a full moon. But that's it. No end of world stuff anyway
