Would it be reasonable to assume (by the number of members vrs. guests signed on) that there are actually about 3000 more lurkers who have not filled out the membership page? I think it is.

Are we going to lose members?? I am to understand that we have a number of people within our rank that are under the age of 18 - quite a lot of people actually - i was under 18 when i first joined - although am 18 now.
With the new entrance design, warning against 18 year olds entering this site - what are you going to do regarding the current situation of now "underage" members.
And surely the numbers might not augment as expeditiously as we would like - as under 18's are now encouraged not to enter.
You do know people will lie to gain membership! Surely that is bad. At least members could be honest and open about their true age before. You are encouraging deceit!

ticklerboy, please believe me that I'm completely opposed to ridiculous age-limits our society and law puts up. The problem: Although we could win more members, we might also endanger this wonderful forum by letting under-age persons in. That's the law, and regardless our personal opinions, we have to abide by the law if we want to survive. We MUST put up an age restriction on our front page, or any half-decent lawyer could chase us to hell and back!

wow, 1000, wel it's more like 1030 right now, this place has grown so much since the the first 100 members, this place is the best tickling place around! hurray for the TMF!
also, I am with Hal on the opposed age-limit..but the laws there and it does suck, I feel that those under 18 should be able to come here to learn more about it and do stuff and yada yada...but hell, they would probably just come in anyway, so I don't even know why I am talking anymore, see ya.

What am I going to do about current underage members? If I find one I will delete them. Period. Anyone who makes a public statement that they are underage (which is under 18) will be removed. I simply cannot allow them to be here.
It sucks. But so does life sometimes. Trust me when I say that the entire situation is not my favorite. If some users had not made such an issue of their ages for reasons that totaly baffle me, this would not have been brought to a head. But some folks had to go at it again and again and again, refusing to leave it be. It generated a fair number of e-mails to me where users showed concern. I needed to act, and I have.
As for your other point: The choice to lie is one that the individual will make, it's up to them and them alone. I encourage deceit no more then someone who parks their car encourages people to steal it.

I thought the title was a typo for 10,000 members; I didn't realize this was a thread from the summer of 2001. 😀
