Yeah. So. I'm really tired and rather incoherent and kinda slap happy so I'm finding this video waaaaay more entertaining than I really should. But yeah.

MIA is definitely gangsta. Growing up in Sri Lanka with political activist parents, hiding from the Sri Lankan government during a time of civil war, then moving to India to live in a derelict house.

She's a painter, a graphic designer, a fashion designer, a script writer, a producer, and a musician.

Despite a lot of her songs sounding almost juvenile, the lyrics are mostly political in nature based on growing up in civil war.

I dunno. I like her. She's different.

I dunno if I'd classify her as "gangsta"; that term has negative connotations of juvenile delinquency and base stupidity which I don't think really apply to MIA. Her music is different tthough, in a good way; the lyrics get annoying sometimes because she repeats and repeats and repeats stuff but her tracks are all unpolished and raw. Like Asian Dub Foundation on ketamine or something. Also her birthday is the same as mine 😀

Well clearly I wasn't insinuating she was a juvenile delinquent or stupid. I was trying to make a point that it's not just an act when she sings about bombs and shit.

I enjoy her annoyingly catchy music, and I'm inclined to investigate her further...but why the hot dogs?
 
You should have a look for Bucky Done Gun on PooJoobe; that's MOAR annoyingly catchy than Paper Planes, and she's not dressed like an 80's disaster thus looks MOAR fit than she does in the Paper Planes video.

I think they're actually sub sandwiches, maybe falafel. Anyway, the selling of the food item out of a shady looking shack is probably a metaphor for some kind of "hustling" to live, maybe even having to do some illegal stuff to have enough to get by. Just my take on it.

I'd reccommend "Hussel" featuring Afrikan Boy who raps:

"Mango Pickle Down River" is a cool song to listen to as a group of 10 year old Aborigine kids (called The Wilcannia Mob) rap on it.

Then, in comparison, if you want something more mainstream, "Come Around" with Timbaland is probably best.
 
Annie nailed it. I played this song on one of our shows and her activist parents shaped a lot of what she grew up around, civil war, political unrest, etc. A lot of her music is about it. I appreciate the fact too, as she travels the world on tour, she continues to incorporate instrumentation and sounds from so many different cultures into her music.

The day after I gave my students a lecture on how they can't bring in inappropriate music, I played this song to illustrate a point on the use on non-traditional instruments in popular music. My kids were like "Uh... get high like planes?"
