When I got out of school this year I had a heck of a time trying to get a job! I filled out so many aplications, I was very flexible, and didn't care what shift I got, just as long as I could get a check at least each week or every two weeks. Well I first went to Wendy's after I got my license. Anyways these guys would have been perfect, they wanted someone to work cash-register, janitorial duty, and someone in the back. They also were hiring people for all shifts, and all positions even manager! Well I filled out a aplication and I never heard anything from them. Well I was loosing hope and started to cuss out the television everytime I heard Bush say "I won't rest until everyone gets a job" or something to that effect. Well I went to Mejiers and filled out an aplication on the computer, and I got a call back the same day! They told me they usually look at aplications after two weeks, and when they looked at them my name was the first to pop up!

Well I start next Tuesday, it's a forty hour week, and I cannot wait!

CONGRATULATIONS!

I'm very glad to read of a felow TMFer with the drive to be independent. I forcast good things for your future!

Good for you thefactor! Just one little point though, I hope you didn't make any typos on your application (you spelt it wrong twice in your thread), anyway, good luck to you in new career

I knew I had a few typos here, but it couldn't be helped, I was too excited! Anyways the application was on the computer. You know it would be nice if there was a spell check on here.

Anyways I found out that I start at $6.30 an hour, and every 90 days I get a raise. Right now since I'm new I'm on probation, but after that I get a lot of great benifits!

I recently made a comparison between the cost of petrol/gas in the UK and in the US. I will now compare wages (with respect to minimum wage).

The minimum wage for 18-21yr olds is currently £4.10 ($7.38), rising to £4.25 ($7.65) in october 2005 and rising to £4.45 ($8.01) in october 2006.

For those over 22 the minimum wage is currently £4.85 ($8.73), rising to £5.05 ($9.09) in october 2005 and rising to £5.35 ($9.63) in october 2006.

That means that you wage of $6.30 would be ILLEGAL in the UK. Provided you are at least 18 your employer would HAVE to pay you minimum $7.38 going up to $7.65 next month! If you are over 22 then your employer would have to pay you $8.73 going up to $9.09 next month! That is regardless of what job you do.

However, things are pretty shit for those aged 16-17 in the UK. From what I gather, the minimum wage is £3 per hour ($5.40), which is pretty poor.

Awww! After all my exertions in finding out this information no one has replied with their views.

Well, I say exertions. Five minutes on the website of the Department for Trade and Industry is hardly taxing. But i'd like to hear a reply to this.

We know that people in other countries are getting screwed. If there was something we could do about it we would, but can't. I'm sorry.

What what what (said quickly).

You are getting screwed Mr Factor. You would be paid about 50% more if you were doing the same job where I live.

Wooooooooo hoooooooooooooo!!!!!!
:bouncybou :bouncybou :couch:

Congratulations on your new job. I've spent more time off than on work over the last 8 years or so. But when I finally landed a decent job back in January I was pretty excited.

I'm sure you're going to do great! Best wishes to you!

Are we comparing apples to apples here? Anyone do the "cost of living" math to compare the two areas?

Besides, it's really not as important as his successfully getting a job is it? :bubble:

I'm just keeping myself amused by doing some maths. But them The Factor mentioned something about him not being able to help it that other countries are getting screwed, which perplexed me.

I've had a look at US minimum wages. It seems that the average is about $5-6 per hour, although I pity the fool who lives in Kansas where the minimum wage is $2.65 per hour! In Oklahoma (I think) the wage can be as low as $2 an hour under certain circumstances!
The best minimum wage seems to be about $7.60 in several states. The situation is more complex in the US than in the UK with each state setting its own minimum wage, which may be higher, lower or equal to the Federal (?) minimum wage.

Of course not. I'm glad hes got a job! Well done man. etc.,

I'm just comparing costs in the UK and the US. I got started after discovering that gasoline/petrol is twice as expensive in the UK as in the US! Wow!

If I had to pay twice as much for gasoline, I'd park my ride and get the bus. Oh I forgot, this is about his new job, not my gasoline woes! :happyfloa

I've got a question for everyone! What the hell? I started a topic about getting a job and all you guys can do is insult my intelligence and than compare gas to what? I was just excited about getting a job and all you guys can do is post and whine on here? Jesus Christ I wonder why I even post on here half the time, most of my posts go unnoticed and no one ever replies, and finally when someone does reply they bring a bunch of people who cry about something I cannot help! I don't care! I got a job! Leave this damn topic and stop crying! I don't feel I'm getting cheated here, Its a lot better than getting nothing at all! Besides I heard that things overseas are a tad more expensive than over here, so who's really getting cheated? Besides if you want to cry about anyone getting cheated, than cry for the foreign workers who work in sewers and other jobs most American's wouldn't even touch!

Okay, I thought I congratulated you about your job. So I went a little off topic with my gasoline comment. It was my feeble attempt at a joke and didn't take anything away from you.

So what's wrong and why the rant?

The Federal minimum wage is $5.35 an hour... State law only takes effect if it is higher than that amount.

I got your PM, I sent you a response. You can take it from there any way you want.

American wages are significantly lower than ours, also their unions are toothless compared to say, the TGWU. Workers rights are virtually non-existant in the US, you can get the sack for virtually any reason on a whim of the boss.

However, as Kis says the cost of living is a smeg-load lower, so the money goes much further. Can you imagine the uproar if septics were told they had to pay about $7 a gallon for gasoline? :firedevil

But to get back to topic, well done TF, I'm really pleased for you. I hated being on benefits when I was about eighteen, it felt like a fortnightly cattle sale going in to sign on. It's a first step to an indepentdant life. 😉

*LATE EDIT* Jesus, where did that spring from? An argument can start anywhere round here, can't it?

This is what I want to know. What with the internet and everything, could I get a UK-based job that allows me to work entirely from home, being paid UK wages and then live in China (or somewhere cheap) where I can make my money go VERY VERY FAR?!
I could probably tickle any of the locals for about £5 (which is probably the equivalent of a weeks salary for some of them!) In fact I could probably emply a harem of beautiful and ticklish girls to tickle whenever I wanted for about £2600 a year! Wow! I would only have to pay each girl £5 a week and I could get 10 of them! I could even pay them twice as much as all the other girls and still only spen £5200 a year. If I earn only £25,000 a year then I could still probably afford to buy a massive house and rule that part of the world with an iron fist and a stiff feather! Wow!

I'm only joking of course.

Oh, so my lifetime goal is a joke? :sowrong: Bangladesh, I'm just biding my time....

Bangladesh would be cheaper than China, although China would afford a higher standard of living (and I'd be less likely to be killed in the name of honour by an angry father because I have been tickling his daughters)

More than likely, the father would kill the daughter, not you. But of course, you could assuage his sense of honor by making him your butler and paying him well -for the region, of course - giving him a place of prestige within your organization. Do that, and he'd be pleased to bring around all 5 of his daughters for you to tickle, and perhaps even bargain with him over occasional "special event" tickling with his wife. As far as a higher standard or living, you could bankroll a better standard of living around yourself and your small fiefdom fairly cheaply. Building a good school there would cost, what, like $25 U.S. ? And the people would be so thankful of your generosity and benevolence, that they'd see the tickling as a fair price to pay.

I'm honestly puzzled why some big-time rich guys like Bill Gates or Rupert Murdoch don't go into some of these smaller countries that are so poor & have so many other problems. Use their wealth and create a whole new Second World country from a Third World country and they'd become elected heads of state, respected historical figures, maybe even work themselves into the local religion centuries down the line, all by carefully spreading a few clams around where the money has more buying power. You could be king, gain the respect of followers, indulge in any lesser fetish you desired as the locals might see as a fair trade off for what they've gained, and do it all on the cheap.

And that's what obsessive-compulsive disorder can do to you! I'm sorry, what was the thread topic here? Somebody won a contest or something?

Good for you, Factor!

Being employed is always good. Being employed with great benefits is cool!
