I just recently found out that I was going to need a surgery on my right foot due to a horseback riding related accident that occurred in January. (Basically, I wasn't paying attention, my horse stepped on my toe and broke it). This is not the first time that this has happened. I usually heal in 2-3 weeks, and go on with no further complications. Well, it has been almost four months now, and now I find our yesterday that I will be going into surgery on April 29th!!! I've never before had an operation, and even though it is a few weeks away, I feel very anxious and hesitant about the procedure. After that long winded explanation, I was just wondering if anyone here on the forum has had surgery, maybe similar to this one, (they will be drilling a pin into my toe where it will stay for six weeks), and if they had any advice on staying calm before the surgery, preparing the night before, and any other things that might make me feel better. 🙁

First of all cs217903, remain calm...
You are simply having a metal pin inserted into your toe to keep it still while it heals. Simple 🙂
The person you need to know is the anesteoligist(sp?), the guy that puts you under.
He really matters!

Now one thing you may want to know is that the Anethesia can make some people feel sick to their stomachs but since you haven't had surgery before you don't know how you will react...
However they can give you medicine that will "block" the naucous feeling in your stomach...just a thought...

Anyway good luck with the surgery! Oh and don't eat anything the night before...

Yeah, surgery is easy...recovery is the pain in the butt. But that's why they give you medication🙂

Don't worry....I was terrified my entire life of any kind of surgery...after the major cancer surgeries i went through in 2001, those fears are gone.

You'll do fine. Just relax🙂

Don't forget

to tell your anesthesiologist if you have any other medical problems, ESPECIALLY any medical allergies. It's a really routine op, you'll be fine. Good luck and happy healing...

XOXO

I haven't had the type of surgery you're about to have, but I just did have major surgery a few months ago. Make sure you tell the anesthesiologist, and the other doctors and nurses that you'll meet during a pre-op interview, about how much pain you can tolerate, and anything you are nervous about. They will explain things to you, and answer any questions.

I don't know whether this surgery requires a local or if it's something you are put completely under, but make sure to ask that. I know in my case, I'm a wus...lol I specifically ask to be put under completely for most procedures.

The night before, follow the instructions your given by the surgical staff, and try to do something to keep yourself busy, and your mind off the surgery. Something fun...it helps cheer you up!

After surgery, most hospitals will ask you how you feel, and even have a pain scale ( 1-10). Make sure you tell them if you are in pain, or if your stomach is upset. They can give you meds that work almost instantly (or maybe it just seems that way!). Don't suffer!

Good Luck with your surgery!

I've had plantar's wart surgery with local injection. (Lethal pain on the toe and foot I had it injected into) and been under a general anestethic once for tendon surgery. What I did is to try and stay calm the night before, and do little things to take my mind off it. I.E. read, watch TV, etc. Try to do something that wont have you thinking of the surgery. I understand it's scary. I was frightened too when I had these procedures. Also, think of how good you will feel when the surgery is over, and why you are having it. That helped me through when I had my procedures. Going through it to get rid of the pain was very helpful in dealing with it, as I saw the alternative of not going through it would have been to remain in pain. I hope that helps.

cs217903, you're in the hands of pros, they know what they're doing, they've done this hundreds of times, and when it's all over you'll say to yourself "Now just what the hell was I worried about" ??

I'm not a doctor, but have seen TV Soap Operas with doctors in the plot lines, and I believe that there are now drugs that actually help with the very anxiety that you are now experiencing.

Ask your real doctor (not the TV call in types) and the surgeon if they use those.

I wish I knew some names of some of the drugs, but I don't. Sorry. The surgeon and anesthesiologist should know them off the top of their head.

By the way, I'm not sure if you can take such drugs long-term or not, so don't count on this as the cure for all your worries for the rest of your life; but I'm told that they do work for the day or two before surgery.

They generally give ya Valium the night before for anxiety.

XOXO

I wish you well- you'll be absolutely fine- you are in the hands of professionals
