A doe, a deer a female deer....
was nowhere to be found.
So instead a deer with decent sized antlers decided to take on my vroom vroom in a game of late night chicken.
Well, to the thanks of my driving skills, and knowing a 200 lb deer didnt stand much of a chance against 2000 lbs of metal...I slowed as much as I could but not enough...and WHAMO!!! Mr. Deer went heels over head as the right front portion of my car hit the deer right in the belly.
I tightened my grip on the wheel, and just went right through. After about another 200 ft or so, I came to stop took out my flashlight and went to look for the poor animal...or stupid one....you decide, and saw it suffering. I grabbed my cell phone and called animal control and the Highway Patrol.
I didnt suffer any injuries and the damage to my car was limited to one small dend on the hood and scratches on the side from the animals hoofs and antlers I suppose.
Well the Hi-Po said they didnt need to come by since there was no personal or property damage, but would send someone out if I wanted to fill out an accident report for my insurance, which I declined.
I did my best by getting some trail mix I keep in the car to much on, and some water from a jug I also carry (hey Im one of those that are prepared year round) and fed and gave the deer some water until animal control arrived.
The deer couldnt move, and I dont want to be graphic for all the animal lovers on here, but the poor deer was suffering and the animal control officer decided it was best to put it down. I asked him for a few moments more and I went to the deer gave it the rest of my trail mix and said a little blessing for the creature...then I went to animal control officer and told him, wait until I leave please.
I feel sad for the poor animal, but Im glad because I know how many can get seriously injured from hitting a deer or even die from swerving to hard and hitting a tree.
So Im okay, and Ill be buying one of the things you put on your car that repels deer today..some ultrasonic thing you put on the hood or something like that.

Rob

Glad you weren't hurt, Rob..people have been killed from hitting a deer. and thanks for not going into details about the poor deer's sufferings.

Aww man, so glad you're not hurt Rob. I can't imagine hitting a deer, scare the hell out of me I imagine.

Sandee

Thanks Izzy.
And no problem, I know how many animal lovers there are here, no need for me to go into graphic details...I do that in the P&R only. :triangle:
And yes a lot of people have, I remember not to long ago a police officer was killed swerving to miss one and then he hit a tree.
I hate not swerve, but at 55 mph, one a 2 lane road in the middle of a bunch of trees, late at night, with wet roads...it was the only option I could do.
I have always been a good driver....my dad taught me well.

Rob

Thanks Sandee...
I saw it comming at me, I have no idea what it thought I was....but it was certainly a way to make me forget which verse I was singing. :wavingguy

Rob

Glad you're okay, Rob! As for those sonic things....they aren't 100%. The deer has to be located next to or behind the vehicle for maximum effect. Obviously, that's too late if you're coming up on one. But, anything that helps keep them at a distance is good. A little trick I was taught, that actually works pretty well, is to flick your lights up and down as soon as you see a deer. The startle response freezes them where they're at for a few moments, often keeping them from coming out into the road.

Ann

Wow.....that must've been something, Robace actually forgetting to say something.... :imouttahe

Anyways...I'm glad that you are okay, and that the car had minimal damage, somewhat. We don't hear of things like that happening here in OK. Probably because the deer are smarter or something.

Thanks Ann. Im glad im OK too..well at least physically :evilha:
I guess its a good thing I lived in South Dakota for 5 years, Ive seen all too many times the results of people swerving to miss deer, and also they had a required driving test on the Air Force Base for airmen comming there to learn how to drive with deer on the road...it happened a lot in South Dakota.
As well as winter driving training.

Tamia....oooooo girl, Im gonna send you such a PM!!!! :devil2:
Hey and it was at the best part of LoKey singing "Ive got a thang for ya", I missed my high note.....
And the deer are smarter, they learned from hiding from the "country boys" that go spotlighting at night...and the "backwoods boys" that will have their way with a deer....ewwwwwwwwwwwww. ROFL!!

Rob

Rob, way to go for taking the time to call animal control and to care of the wounded creature as best you could. As one of the forum's animal lovers I commend you for your thoughtful actions that many people wouldn't have bothered with.

I've already hit a couple. Pretty scary.

Hitting a deer in New Jersey's considered A) a great way of executing population control for the herd, without the messy legal opening of Hunting Season, and B) a windfall for both the insurance industry, who ultimately benefit, and auto body shops. It's a way of life here. Many people here would rather see the deer die, since it would stop them from eating the vegetables they've meticulously planted in their gardens...not caring that the newly built McMansion they live in occupies space formerly occupied by the roaming deer to begin with...and their roaming space continues to diminish
:sowrong:

Rob, after the deer was put down, you should have cut out the tenderloin. It makes delicious jerky.

Glad you are ok Rob.Something to watch out for is,even if you see a deer cross the road safely, there may be several more right behind it.It happens all the time around here.It seems to be more of a problem during mating season.

hmmm it's a good thing i like you or you would be in much trouble with that remark...

Rob I feel your pain, same thing happend to me. I was on my way home from up state NY when out of no where a Deer comes flying out of nowhere and I hit it dead on. I stopped my car and I looked for the deer and saw it running fine up a hill. I was like wow I never thougth that would happen to me. when I got back to the city I got a nice bill to fix my car.

I am glad you are ok

Yikes. I had one hit ME driving my boyfriends car in college, scared the hell out of me and majorly damaged the front end. Glad you're ok, cuz those suckers are HUGE!
XOXO

Rob, try filing a lawsuit and sue someone. you suffered incredible mental trauma. this is a golden opportunity. shouldnt be hard to find a lawyer to take your case. i would probably start off by filing a suit against the deers family. if no luck there, try going after the state. keep me posted! :evilha:

What was your speed, yes 200 lbs vs 2000 means yer safe but that can severely wreck yer car, hell, look at the damage a human can cause on a car(see ben rothlisburger)

Also, ive heard those ultrasonics dont work very well, in wisconsin, we've had those on the bumper and the deer simply looks at us

First off...LOL Bill. Well actually venisen jerky is one of my favorties, but when the deer doesnt die instantly, the meat gets really bitter. Its from adrenaline that gets produced, I learned that when I used to hunt deer with my friends in South Dakota. So I wouldnt have wanted the meat...the antlers however are another story........sorry izzy :happyfloa

Thank you to everyone....
manaic, Im first going to sue Bush...its his policies that made the deer run infront of me, and his economic plans that force me to drive to work, and might as well blame him for everything since everyone else likes to LOL. Also I think global warming was at fault, Im trying to figure out who to sue first over that. That damn global warming.....making deer act all crazy.... 😛

Goodie, I was going 55, but I slowed to about 40 before I hit it...and it hit the right front side and rolled away from me. So I was lucky, thank goodness my car (Ford Taurus) slopes down in front acting like a ramp or something.

But thanks again all, Im glad Im okay too.
