What would you change? Get rid of? Add to? Put more attention into?

What would you want to fix up and change?

I don't think I would change much as all. The forum is pretty great the way it is. The mods do an awesome job. I might add a few more to get rid of spam faster and stop some arguments. Really though this place is pretty awesome the way it is in my humble opinion.

I understand, Kurchy. But you're more of a SS poster than anything else and I'm seeking views from those in regards to growth of forum. <3

I do post in other places its just sort of overwhelmed by my SS posts. I likely have several thousand posts elsewhere but yes compared to 140,000 plus posts in the SSF that's seems very small. Lol.

For me, the forum inofitself is not too bad. But there are many things missing or not allowed to made to happen anymore, all of which would bring heavy, steady numbers in.

ETA: I know I'm continuously skating on thin ice and may be banned for this thread and any discourse held within it.

A few things come to mind, but they're mostly just boring technical changes:
  • Flatten a lot of the sub-forum structures. Most new comers seem lost on the site as it is, and many of the sub-forums are much less used. When someone actually does post something interesting in one of them, it generates a lot less discussion because they're less often viewed.
  • Removal of the "polls" forum and replacing with the ability to make polls in the main discussion forums and possibly other forums.
  • Deletion of all accounts that meet the criteria of having no posts, the join date is over a certain number of years ago, and the last log in was very near the join date. There are so many throw away accounts.
  • Discouraging or disallowing those viral or gamified posts like "Count backwards with me" or "Name things that start with the letter A." They inflate post counts without adding any real substance and sometimes congest search results. I often can't even use the What's New section of the site because it's full of these.
  • Deletion of old blogs that are empty–there's a bunch. Makes browsing blogs not so fun.
  • I'm not sure what would be the best way to do this for this site, but if there was a way to strike a better balance between ease of sign up and preventing spam accounts or duplicate accounts, that would be wonderful. I also still run into a lot of pretenders–those who are very clearly not the age, gender, etc. they claim to be. I know there is the verification checkmark, but few have done that so far and it's optional (I haven't even gotten around to it yet lol).
  • In the member information that appears next to a post, it would be nice to see the gender, alignment (lee, ler, both), and location of the poster.
  • Making filling out the profile part of the sign up process. I think some newer members don't realize there is a profile. It would also be nice if the about section was the first thing you see when clicking on a user. Putting profiles more front and center would probably make things feel a little more modern and the members more relatable.

I love this, thank you for taking the time to respond. I wanna chew on this, absorb this and then reply properly. But definitely wanted to acknowledge receipt. <3

So people with high post counts are bad all of a sudden. Thats just mean. I post a lot here cause i love this place and I been posting here for almost 25 years. I don't think my high post count makes me any better then anyone but it doesn't make me any worse either

You're welcome 🙂

I actually forgot one and was just reminded of it after catching up on the AI-related thread in the other discussion forum.

I have felt for a while now that the forum being broken up into too many sections (forums) is a bad idea for the modern web, as it dilutes engagement and makes staying up to date in the community difficult. People are less likely to engage regularly and new members are less likely to stay if they have the sense that the forum has less activity than it actually does (it's just scattered across many fairly unconnected sections).

So one design solution that I had thought of in the past was utilizing a tagging system and having less sections. If it were very easy to filter/show only those tags that someone was interested in, it would be cleaner and more lively.

So, for example, there might be a media section/forum, under which tags like "image," "video", etc could be applied. Under the stories section, there could be tags like "Fiction," "Non-Fiction," etc. More than one tag could be applied to some, if for example it related to celebrities, or if AI was involved in the creation of the material. This type of change will probably never happen, but if so, it would have to be thought out carefully to balance simplicity with flexibility.

Not at all, and I reached out to you in DM to clear any misunderstandings. 🙂

More modern forum. Better chatroom. Get rid of the tagging posts that go on forever. Better messaging system. More user-friendly in general.
