I have never used anything but Internet Explorer.Today i downloaded Firefox just to compare the two,and Firefox seems to be a bit slower.Could this be an issue with my computer?Any feedback is welcome.😀

They're about the same speed on my computer. It's just that Firefox is much safer for not getting viruses. 😀

Same for me. And Firefox's search tools seem to work faster the IE's, IMO.

On the first visit to a web site firefox will be slower since it has no cache of the site, but on the second visit, firefox will be far faster. 😀

addons to trick out firefox - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

There's a way to speedup firefox using pipelining.

1. Type “about:config” w/o quotes into the address bar and hit enter.
2. On the top there is a filter, copy and paste “network.http.pipelining” w/o quotes and set it to true.
3. Copy and paste “network.http.proxy.pipelining” w/o quotes into the filter and set it to true also!
4. Copy and paste “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” w/o quotes into the filter and set it to 8. This means that it will make 8 requests to a page when it reaches it. A normal browser will make one request to a web page each time. When you enable pipelining.requests to a high number, it will make several requests at once which really speeds up the loading.
5. Close and start firefox and enjoy the nice speedup. :bouncybou

Firefox is by far the better of the two however i have noticed that firefox uses more of the cpu than IE especially with multiple tabs open, Although this is probably more of an issue for older computers

Firefox 2 is somewhat slow. It has a number of unresolved memory leaks that version 3 (Due Juneish) is supposed to fix. Right now the reigning speed champ tends to be Opera, http://www.opera.com It is an excellent browser (and free) and a good choice if speed is what you desire most. As secure as FF, according to most.

Having been using it almost exclusively for perhaps a few months are so, Firefox is definitely noticeably slower at some simple tasks than IE on my now somewhat dated XP system, but I continue using it predominantly anyway, thanks to the features provided by a few of the addons I use which aren't available with IE, at least not version 6 of IE which is the newest version of that browser I've thus far used. Although for all I know some of that slowness may be in part thanks to some of these addons.

The most significant difference I've noticed is when trying to save pictures from a webpage. The IE 6 browser always popped up a menu over any pictures I hover my mouse pointer over allowing me to save the picture, a process which was always nearly instantaneous, I always assumed because the picture was already downloaded in order to display it on the screen. However, whenever I right-click on a picture on a web page to save it with Firefox (I'm currently using version 2), it seems to have to download the picture "from scratch", something which it seems shouldn't be necessary for the same reason it doesn't appear to be necessary with IE. For this reason, I sometimes open IE if I want to save more than 1 or 2 pictures, as it seems to be much faster for that purpose.

This, to me, suggests less efficiency in the way FF performs at least some functions. I hate having to open a separate browser just to do one thing (or one thing a number of times), but this difference makes it almost necessary if I don't want to spend half the day doing something which shouldn't take more than a few minutes, especially with my already-slow dialup connection.

I know there are plenty of people who swear FF is faster, and if you tweak it right perhaps it is, but IE has always been faster for me. Also, due to the popularity of IE some sites do show up a little better on it. I have both IE and FF on my computer, I use FF when IE starts giving me trouble with a site or I want to be able to view a site both logged in and not. It's also worth noting IE isn't nicknamed Internet Exploder for nothing; everything has its drawbacks.

Oh, and on a side note IE 7 is the most recent version, and has several major improvements over IE 6, the most noticeable being tabbed browsing.

I try to avoid using Internet Explorer as much as possible because it has more security vulnerabilities. When I browse on an a PC I tend to do my of my browsing with Firefox, but I keep IE handy because every once in awhile I run across a website that works better on IE.

I have not noticed much of a speed difference between IE and Firefox.

If you are look for a very fast browser, you might want to check out Safari. It is very popular on the Mac, but it is also available on the PC. Apple bills at as the world's fastest, easiest-to-use browser. And in my experience, it really lives up to the billing: it is very, very fast. Obviously, it won't speed up your Internet connection, but page rendering is very snappy. Safari is my main browser on my Mac.

Thanks everyone.😀 It does seem to be doing a bit better today.

As soon as i posted this of course,Firefox slowed to a crawl grrr.So i'm back on IE for now at least..

I normally use Firefox but lately the backpage and forward arrow buttons have been missing! That kinda makes browsing websites a bit of a pain. I hope that issue gets resolved soon because I'm tempted to give Opera a chance and dump Firefox.

I really love Firefox but the lack of those buttons makes the browser page a pain in the ass to use. I'm using Internet Explorer right now but would rather not be doing so.

Have you accidentally turned off the navigation toolbar? Go to View->Toolbars->Navigation Toolbar. There should be a checkmark next to that menu item. If there is not, select that menu item and you should get your your forward and back buttons back.

If the navigation toolbar is actually there (URL, stop, reload, home), but it is simply missing the forwad and back buttons, it sounds like there may be something seriously wrong your installation of Firefox. Perhaps it has gotten corrupted somehow. Or maybe your computer has been infected with some kind of malware. In this case I would suggest updating the virus definitions on your anti-virus software and running it. If that doesn't work, try downloading and reinstalling Firefox.

I encourage you to try to get Firefox working, but if you do decide to download some other browsers, you should try Safari 3.1. It is very fast!

Hi, Icycle. I tried to reply to your message earlier today but even Internet Explorer was giving me trouble. I've got a feeling there's a nasty virus living in my computer. I tried doing everything you recommended yet I've had no luck. Thanks for your advice, though. Guess it's off to the computer repair guy who will hopefully fix this thing. Thanks again!

Success!

I don't believe it! I'm not even that computer savvy yet I did it! I found a way to retrieve those back and forward page buttons! I went to the 'view' thing up there and clicked it, then I clicked 'customize' and voila, there were two brand new buttons waiting for me to install! Now I can enjoy Firefox like I used to, without having to endure the aggravation of 'manually' going back from page to page.

So NOW I can honestly say I LOVE Firefox!

But how did those buttons disappear in the first place?

Hold on! Not so fast, damn it!

I've retrieved those buttons, which is good, but now I've got a problem when I log on to MySpace. I keep getting this (except the subject pertains to 'Firefox'):

After I send the error report, (repeatedly, may I add), my computer crashes.

Are you sure you really wanna give Firefox a try, Bugman?

This is not normal. And I doubt that it is Firefox's fault. I can assure you that millions of people log on to MySpace with Firefox successfully every day.

It's sounding more and more like there is something seriously wrong with your computer, or at the very least with your install of Firefox. If you haven't done so already, you may want to try uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox. If that still doesn't work, that's probably a sign that something much more serious is wrong with your computer. What version of Windows are you running?

This problem only recently happened. I started getting those pop-up notices on either Monday or Tuesday. That's about the time I was having trouble logging on to MySpace. I have Windows XP, by the way. I also removed and then re-installed Firefox earlier this morning. Maybe I will have to have the Geek Squad come on out and do their thing. I'll keep you posted if anything new happens or if I solve the problem. Thanks, Icycle.

By the way, I am currently using Internet Explorer and was able to log onto MySpace without any problem so perhaps this is a Firefox issue after all.

Are you referring to the Yahoo error messages or something else? Short of further detail, it reminds me of a rather vicious spyware infestation I managed to contract some time ago. In addition to updating and running your antivirus program, have you tried running an anti-adware/spyware program such as Spybot Search and Destroy? If not, and you want to try that, I'll try to find a download link for it for you. That and one or two similar programs have helped rid my system of problems more than once.

Although as your problem is still a mystery it's hard to be sure it will help, you could try reinstalling the Yahoo Messenger as well. Although every time I've updated my Yahoo Messenger it seems to have more bugs than the previous version, perhaps a fault of the messenger itself or it could be due to each new version being more resource-greedy than the last with my somewhat dated system. But you hadn't by chance just recently installed or updated the messenger just prior to these problems, had you? If so, it may not be inconceivable that a bad install of the messenger may have somehow led to other problems.

Oops. On re-reading I guess I misunderstood. You're not getting those messages about Yahoo Messenger but a similar error message about Firefox I guess is what you meant. That's different, of course, but it still might not hurt to do an adware/spyware scan in addition to a thorough antivirus scan.

IE, FF, Opera, oh my!

Crashes to the left of us. Error messages to the right of us.

I swear, if I ever find a way to download content using an abacus, they can all kiss my rump!

I'm currently testing a browser called Safari from Apple; so far I like it. It runs real fast from the outset, it works with sites that contains, Java & scripts, it has spell check much like Fire Fox.

I'm going to do some research to see what type of security issue it may have. I might decide to use it as my company's primary browser, which I will completely uninstall Internet Explorer.

Hi, Cabalist! Well, it looks like my problems are solved. I logged on to MySpace just now with no trouble whatsoever. Maybe it was a Firefox bug but it somehow got worked out without any help from me. Those antivirus scans I ran yesterday may have helped. Thanks for your help, too!

Spybot Search and Destroy?
You can get the free download for Spybot at www.download.com

Hey, Bugman! I used to use Spybot when I used Norton but when I installed McAfee Anti-Virus I was prompted to remove Spybot due to incompatibility.

Dussicar, you may have a point. Remember when life was so much simpler? I know mine was four years ago, before I bought this computer but then I wouldn't have met my wonderful TMF friends.
