With the holidays rolling around, and all the fewer ideas in my head of what I could possibly need (without naturally going "VIDEO GAMES!"), I decided I need to ditch CDs once and for all. I have a dream that my above and below my car seats the area can be clear of jewel cases, that they won't just go into the rear seat of my sedan, or into the trunk, or right next to me, or in the glove compartment, center console, or ANYWHERE ELSE!!! That I'll be able to discontinue my longtime trend of getting a cardboard box to empty things into to make it "look nice".

There's really just one little problem. I just don't give a crap about apple. For every Mac user that can scream "I USE MAC AND I'M VIRUS FREE!" I can scream back "CUZ NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOU AND YOUR LITTLE CHAMPION!"

But I've opened my eyes, of course, and seen that Apple has monopolized the mp3 player market but with one last competitor standing. Naturally, its Microsoft.

Which one is better? I've read tons of reviews about each one's flaws, but I'd like to try and get definitive answers. Is there some other player I haven't mentioned that just happens to be extra cost effective as well (seeing as Apple's bloated their price, Microsoft is trying to fight, and Sandisk is looking like the only real compromise between the two)?

Let me know.

I love Zune. I think it's better value (that is, no premium for the brand). I had the non-touch screen zune 80gb, which suited me just fine because I'm indifferent to touch screens.

Zune also tends to have FM tuning, which I think is totally boss. To my knowledge, Mac's strategy is to skip that obvious and useful feature in favour of 60 different ways to access Farmville.

I'm kinda concerned with going touchscreen (as thats prettymuch all thats offered now), as I never bothered with them for phone and i've been a cd guy prettymuch.....forever.

Of the two, I'd go with the Zune. An iPod means dealing with iTunes, and iTunes is the devil.

Personally, I use a Sony Walkman. It lasts for ages on a single charge if I'm just listening to music, and the sound quality is excellent. They're not terribly expensive, either.

The only thing I can say is that, i'm tired of people saying you should buy iPod simply because it has apps.

Depends what you're looking for - what features, how much mem, durability, how much money you're willing to pay.

Not a huge fan of iPods, they make me feel like I'm sexually harassing an elderly demented woman in a nursing home.

Could always go with a reeeeally old MP3 player. Granted, not really high tech and you'd only have about 8 gigs max, but it's cheap and won't die as quickly as more modern portable music players.

I personally go for Sony products, I've had the least issues with them.

I have a little Sansa for my mp3 needs. They're pretty inexpensive, work very well, and don't require as much as the Zune or iPods.

ipod all the way. I used to be dead against them but after getting the 160g one with movies as well as music, ive realised the error of my ways. Its just so easy. I am biased because I have a mac and they go hand in hand but, for me, its the easiest way.

First of all,

What an unusual problem

Second, I think it comes down to what you're "looking" for. The Zune store just doesn't have as much music as the itunes store, though I believe it may be cheaper. On the other hand, you can transfer all the music on your CDs manually for either device. No matter what, if you have your music stored digitally you run the risk of losing it if your hard drive dies. itunes can be finicky, as well, as has been mentioned.

Too bad they don't have a 6-month trial program for them 😛

As for me I have one of those nice little clip-on iPod nanos. It's very small and convenient. If you want a way to store all your music though...thats not the way to. I use it to listen to while exercising and going places, and my CD + LP collection for listening (with better sound quality) at home.

It comes down to what you're using it for, I guess 😀

Basically my main concern is storage (with all the touch screen BS its kind of disappointing what used to be the MAIN aspect has taken a backseat to applications).

I have 16 gigs of music (and plenty more of everything else) so far on my external HD, and I'm anticipating going up as high as 20 gigs after I basically rip every cd I have.

I really want to get rid of the CDs and get some space back in my life. A nice empty car (and maybe even a presentable room for once. I know noone's ever up there except for me, however......well, you get the idea) and basically every disc I ever burned/purchased/listened to in one little compact machine (that doesnt fail) would be ideal.
