Is it a fetish?

I have read that there's a rather large percentage of guys that go online and pretend to be females.
As a married guy it never crossed my mind to ever go online and try to be a woman.
I don't understand it but as a guy with a tickle/foot fetish I know a lot of people don't understand that.
So would this online woman thing be a fetish?

No. At least not if that's somehow supposed to make it "more OK" than other forms of deceit.

It's like that TV show, "Catfish". You never really know who you're talking to when online. Some people will say the right things just to get what they want and some people are just users. Sweet words of love typed/texted knowing they're full of shit. It's not so much a fetish as just a sense of entitlement and lack of conscious.

Great, this makes me wonder how many times I was actually flirting with a dude.

Yes, it could be a fetish (More correctly a paraphilia) BUT only if the individual needs to commit the act of deception to gain arousal. It's a very very very rare paraphilia.

However, the huge majority of people who gender flip online are not doing it for direct arousal from the act, but as an act of deception, so they can gain access to others to discuss the things that they truly get off on. Basically, many males find themselves unable to enter into conversations that lead to their gratification when they present as themselves, so they turn to deception of gender to achieve it.

It's not uncommon for me to see in the chat room, two users who identify as female, but I know as males due to other interactions playing with each other. One of the good things about the web is that it's as real as you choose to make it. And it matters very little who is on the other side of the screen, so long as the interaction is only about some cyber, and has no greater chances to be more. What does it really matter if the gender of the other person is the same or opposite yours, as all you wanted was the fantasy they would type? And if it works for you, you're a winner.

What Myriads said. Most people here have at least one other sockpuppet account anyway.

Isn't this sort of like men who get aroused by dressing and acting like women? Except on the internet. I could see it being a fetish, but then again anybody can be anybody when it comes to the internet and the "rush" from that could also be the cause.

Stop flirting then 😛

Many times when my wife and I talk online with supposed foot fetish guys, I will request to skype to verify who they are based on the photos they send. A good 50% of the time they decline and we never hear from them again. A good quick way to verify who they are and not to waste any investment of time.

But there's that understandable anger at the realization that the person is talking to one a male when believing it's a female. But for others, it's not the gender that is the issue but the fact the person wasn't truthful. We all reveal bits and pieces of ourselves when we PM or reply to each other. If you're lying about something as innocent what gender you are, then it's hard to want to even want to keep talking to that person. And proves the deceiver as being a douche.

No, I'd say this is less than nothing like crossdressing. Like Myriads said, these people pretend to
be women in order to deceive others. They want to deceive others because they feel nobody will
indulge their fetishes (whatever they may be) and interests if they present as themselves. That's
not at all what crossdressing is.

No. What I understand is that the guys usually use photos of a woman they know and then cater to their fantasies of what other guys would do to her. Or they want to fantasize about lesbian play with another woman. So posing as a girl online in itself is not a fetish or preference. They just know it's easier to get sex talk online if they act like they are a woman.
