Is the word Fagot not offensive anymore?

I'm trying to determine if it's just me or did the world suddenly decide the word Fagot isn't offensive anymore.

This idiot on DA used the word fagot to insult someone. I called him out. And now I'm getting a bunch of messages from his supporters telling me the word is no longer offensive. That it's watered down and means nothing.

When did that happen? I checked my email so there was no announcement there. The news never said anything about it and it wasn't published in the papers.

So what happened?

And here's a note. I hate the word fagot. Why? Because it's offensive.

Do you mean ******?

I won't use it around people that I care about if it offends them.

Other then that, I'll use it playfully with friends that don't get offended by it.

I don't find it offensive. It's a catch 22, basically. There's some folks who ARE gay don't even get offended by it, and there are some who do.

Meh.

Yeah I mean't '******'.

I don't know I've been spelling it weird all day. Ah it's been a stressful day. I probably shouldn't have posted this.

Anyways thanks for posting.

I'd guess that the people who are telling to that have decided that if the term doesn't offend them, it shouldn't offend anyone. It's a common delusion.

This.

I don't use the F word at all. It's down right "mean" because you can't tell who will be offended and who won't.
I have many gay friends and even though they call each other the F word jokingly, I consider it off limits to myself.

This makes sense to me.

Thanks Redmage. It is a delusion. A lot of people just don't get it.

In truth, I think the word is only offensive in our culture. As far as I know, a derivative of the word, fag, is still used overseas to describe a cigarette.

I think the word is considered offensive by homosexuals for two reasons:
1) It's used by heteros as a derogatory term to describe them.
2) It's used by other homosexuals to describe ones they consider to be dirty and negatively represent the gay community.

This is only my opinion, as informed by a close family friend who is gay. And I mean, he's flaming gay. And that's how he desribed the word's usage to me.

Eh. Freedom of Speech, man.
I suggest ear plugs because people are gonna say whatever the hell they want when they want.

See, I think you're just looking for people to claim that it's uber negative and people who use it are ignorant. -- It's not always like that.

It's like, stating that "you" hate when people use that word in any context. And then offending or slamming people who are mellow about it. -- That's slightly hypocritical.

And no, I'm not saying that the end part is what you're doing, I just added it to my post as an after thought.

It's offensive. I would liken it to the "n" word in that some gay men have reclaimed the word and find it OK for only them to say it. And then there are LGBT people who will never use it (like me). But that doesn't make it OK for straight people to say.

My general rule of thumb is, when in doubt, find another word. It's really not that much mental energy.

No I'm trying to get an honest opinion out of people. You've stated yours and Redmage stated his. I agree with what he's saying. I don't really know how you got I think you're just looking for people to claim that it's uber negative and people who use it are ignorant. If it was my ultimate goal I would have said it at the beginning.

It's not really a word I ever got into using, but compared to many other words out there I don't believe it's all that offensive anymore.

If it bugs you though, no one is suggesting that you use it.

Okay.

I don't see how someone can say it's not nearly as offensive anymore as it used to be. I mean homosexuals are still to this day fighting for things they believe in. It's discrimination they are fighting against. So I don't see how that word is suddenly less offensive now then ever before.

And many homosexuals have also adopted using the word in a easy, light manner.

I don't agree with this 100%.
Yes fight for what you believe in, of course.
But... it all comes down to what you believe in. If you find the word offensive, don't use it. But you can't stop other people from using it-- jokingly or seriously.

Lots of groups of people are fighting for things they believe in. Furthermore words change over time.

It used to be much more offensive to use the words slut, nigger, vagina, penis, etc...those are just a few examples that have now become much more mainstreamed. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying that it's happened. Society changes over time, including the words we use.

How many are we talking about here? 100? 200?

I'm sorry, but that's like me saying it's ok to call white people 'devil and cracker' because I don't find it offensive anymore. I don't speak for my race and I doubt a few or several homosexuals speak for every homosexual either.

I have LGBT friends that have call me '******' joking around. Apparently it doesn't bother all of them. I wouldn't call someone it in an un-joking manner and typically not while other people are around, but still.

I agree with you, but I don't think it's happened now. I mean look at 'Jessica Simpson' (I believe it was her). She used the phrase 'Indian Giver' and was scorned by the native american people. It just goes to show you that people are still offended by those things. We just choose to believe it's less offensive because we hear it all the time.

I get where your coming from. Seriously I do. Believe me the trunk of my car isn't filled with 'just incase' protest signs or anything like that.

I get what your saying, but even in today's world it's hard not to offend people. Everyone considers different things offensive and you often do not know what those things are. Honestly I feel it is impossible to avoid offending people.

I agree with you there. Maybe this is a bad example, but 'Resident Evil 5' suddenly came to mind.

My mom calls me both of those, as does my sister.. I'm not offended. I mean honestly if someone is offended by what's said then respect it. I wouldn't go around shouting things that offended everyone, but to the people that aren't offended I'll use it. But, I'm not sure how many people use ****** to refer to LGBT's anymore so.... I think people typically use it as you would use 'jackass' or 'fuckface'.
