Is there one individual sports record that will never be broken?

I heard a couple of guys talking about this the other day, and the consensus was Denny McLain's 31-6 record in 1968 is unapproachable because the game has changed so much. I don't really keep up with sports now, but I remember that very well. Anyway, I thought you all might enjoy kicking this around. 🙂

One record likely never to be broken is Johnny Van Der Meer's two straight no hitters. Throwing one no hitter in a career, or a season, is tough enough, but one pitcher throwing two straight no hitters, with all the offense in baseball today? No.

Another record likely never to be broken: Nolan Ryan's total of seven no hitters. Again, throwing one no hitter in a career is tough enough, but seven no hitters? Not gonna happen.

chamberlains 100 point basketball game. Never.

Yeah, that's a good example.

That's a new one to me Mitch. Out of curiosity what year was that?

Yeah, he was unreal. I went to see him once when he was pitching for Houston. Just my luck I caught him on a bad day. He got shelled early and was in the dugout by the third of fourth inning..

There are a TON of records which won`t be or can`t be broken.

Cy Young`s 511 wins and 749 complete games pitched

Tony Dorsett`s 99 yard TD run

Nolan Ryan has several pitching records which no one will ever get close to

Johnny Van Der Meer's back to back no hitters were in June, 1938, bug. The first one was June 11, and the second June 15.

Many baseball announcers I've heard over the years agree that is the one record that will never be touched, because, as I said before, there is so much offense in baseball nowadays, that it's difficult enough for a pitcher to pitch one no hitter, let alone two no hitters in a row.

In hockey:

1. Gordie Howe playing NHL hockey in 5 different decades
2. Gordie Howe playing a full NHL-season at the age of 52 (and scoring at a .5 PPG pace)
3. Wayne Gretzky's 215 points in one NHL season
4. Tony Hand's 4,000-something points in the British league
5. Peter Forsberg's 31 points in the 92/93 World Junior Championship*
6. Markus Naslund's 13 goals in the 92/93 World Junior Championship*
7. Martin Brodeur's 110 NHL shutouts
8. Henrik Lundqvist's five straight (and counting) 30-win season to begin an NHL goaltending career

*In 7 games, and yes, that means Forsberg almost scored at a 4.5 PPG pace against the best junior players in the world!

I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones I can think of on the top of my head. 🙂 I will reserve myself to take away #3, 5 and 6 if we have another high-scoring era, but I doubt it since the goalies are so much better nowadays.

-Most RBI in a single season: "Hack" Wilson of the Chicago Cubs 191 RBI in 1930

-Most career shutouts: Walter Johnson 110

-Most career triples: Sam Crawford 309

-Highest career batting average: Ty Cobb .366

-Most grand slams in one inning: Fernando Tatis hit 2 in 1999

Emmitt Smith's all-time rushing record - I think with the NFL shifting towards two-back systems that it will be a lot less likely that his record will be broken. LT was the leading candidate but injuries caught up with him. There are some great young RB's in the league but we'll have to see where they are in eight-or-nine years.

UCLA's 88-game winning streak.

Very nice, but they are nothing compared to the greatest NHL record/stat in the history of the sport, or any sport:

Hall of Famer Bill Mosienko of the Chicago Blackhawks scored the fastest hat trick in NHL history against the New York Rangers in a game in 1952. Mosienko scored the three goals in 21 seconds.

Nothing will ever, ever be that impressive in sports.

Ok. I admit. You have me beaten with that! 😱

I remember that one of the records that was never going to be broken was Ty Cobb's 96 steals in one year, which has been surpassed more then a few times.

i dont think anyone will ever beat erick dickerson's single season rushing record (yes i know a cowboy fan will say herschel walker already did in the AFL) but that doesnt count for the NFL and with the way it has changed i cant see someone doing it

I don't think anybody will ever beat Gordie Howe's record for most years as a pro hockey player.

Only one who would have been close would have been Chris Chelios but sounds like he's calling it quits, finally. I agree wholeheartedly with Mosienko but I'd like to add Mario Lemieux's "5 goals, 5 ways" (Even Strength, Power Play, Short-Handed, Penalty Shot and Empty Netter) to the record docket.

It's hard enough for a player to score 5 goals in one game; last time was Marian Gaborik in 07 and before that was Fedorov in 96. On top of that only 43 players in league history have scored 5 or more goals in a game. What's special is that Lemieux is the only player in league history to score all 5 of his goals differently and given how rare it is for someone to get 5, even though the NHL is supposed to be "offense-oriented", I don't see that record breaking anytime soon...if at all.

Tiger Woods record for most mistresses?

All joking aside, I'd say Chamberlin's 100 points and Cal Ripken and Brett Favre's consecutive games played. Particularly Favre's, today's NFL players take too much of a beating.

Jerry Rice's career pass receptions (1,549)

good thing I decided to read what people said, that's the one I was going to say.

TO should retire now... I know he wants to be number 1, but he'll never be better than his fellow team mate, Rice.

I must say this record impressed me... I was thinking while I was reading "Yeah this isn't going to be that impressive, you just think it's good bc you like the player or whatever" lol.. but you finally said what the record was, and that's pretty impressive, 3 goals in 21 seconds.

I just thought I'd remind you that Frank Gore is still playing football.. And although Emmit Smith is awesome, don't be bias because you're a Cowboys fan, thanking no one will ever beat him lol...

Okay some records that won't be beating, probably

this one is a shared record, both Barry Sanders and Gore have it, The only two backs to rush for a 2 TDs of 75 yards or longer in the same game.

Gore's 212 rushing yards in one game, but that's a 49er record, not a football record...

and well I'm not going to list all of Jerry Rice's records, because really who wants to read all that because there's alot.. and i'm not saying none of them will ever be broken, because of them might, but most of them probably won't, such as Receptions, Recieving Yards, Touch Downs.. the list goes on, he's the best lol...

I want to say Joe Montana's 45 tds in the post season but Brady might break that some day lol... He's got to be close... stupid Patriots lol..

49ers 10 consecutive years in the play offs? That's pretty hard to beat I think... Because that's 10 straight years... if you go 9 and then you don't make it you don't tie for the record.. so I think that might be hard to beat

Okay obviously i'm a 49er fan, I know our records

but moving on...

Rickey Henderson's stolen bases record.

There i'm done.

George Foreman holds two heavyweight boxing records that will likely never be broken: Oldest man to become World Heavyweight Boxing Champion (at 45) and heavyweight champion with the longest interval between his first and second title reigns (about 20 years).

In spite of all the offense in major league baseball today, I dont think that Joe Dimaggio's 56 game hitting streak will ever be broken. 56 games is more than a third of a season, and, with all the speciality relievers and closers in baseball today, hitters usually see a fresh arm at least several times a game. In 1941, when Joe D had that streak, starting pitchers often went nine innings, win or lose, and you often had him facing pitchers whose arms might have been tired by the end of the game.

Mitch

Cal Ripken's 2,632 consecutive games played. Even the best players get rested by their manager one or two games a year, and that's if they themselves don't request it due to injury or personal reasons.

I was just going to mention this one.

Rickey Henderson's stolen bases record.

And this one is pretty much untouchable as well.

Same game, but different strategies, different times.
