Does anybody watch the Judge Judy show?

It has been pretty quiet at work, so I have mostly been doing some filing & organizing with the TV going on in the background for some sound while I work. For the past 2 days I have had the local channel on that airs Judge Judy. What is it with this lady? She seems to hate both the plaintiff and defendants, cuts people off, refuses to see their point (not sees it and disagrees with it in legal or even common sense terms, but just shouts them down), makes fun of them... these people aren't laywers; outside of the ones who are truly trying to dodge responsibility or get away with something, these are folks "doing the best they can with what they got" within a system created and perpetuated by experts who went to special schools to work within this system to begin with.

She actually told a plantiff to move it along faster, she had things to do today.... no - THIS is what you supposed to be doing - judgin'! Keeping people on point makes sense. Creating, then enjoying, their discomfort is rather ugly. And so much of what she says seems more about her personal opinion than theories of the law broken down for the layman.

It's not so much the rudeness that bothers me, that's just a part of it. The fact that this is, or was, a legal authority figure, someone employed in the public trust who was elected (or worse, appointed) belittling common people, bugs me. I watch this woman and think... French Revolution.... Simon Cowell can be a jerk, but ultimately his comments potententially steer the targets of his barbs along to persuit more pragmatic things in their lives; besides, he doesn't represent or act as an ambassador for anything in an official capacity.

Wapner was never like this! A little grumpy at the most. While Judge Mathis, Judge Hatchett or Judge Larry Joe get a little antsy, there's never a cruel superiority within them spewing out. I can chose not to watch, and that's what I'm going to do.... but that won't change what she is and what's going on when I'm on another channel. What is her problem?

The buzz on Da Judge is that before she became famous, she spent about 20 years as a judge for NYC Family Court system. I don't know what your legal/CJ background is but I can tell you from experience, what they deal with there is HORRENDOUS. Things move VERY fast there and become sooo ugly and you "get" 🙄 to see people at their worst.

Not saying it excuses her rudeness because it doesn't. She's one of those judges who I either totally agree with or totally disagree with come decision time. At times I think she's funny~I like to watch her relationship with Burt.
XOXO

In my opinion, all of those "Judge" shows represent the worst that daytime TV has to offer. I put them in the same category as Jerry Springer and WWE.

Well, some of the cases are pretty low, but I must admit that as far as basic legal theory pertaining to contracts (written, verbal, and lease related), what self-defense does and does not allow, implied warrenty, how much of a burden of proof is needed for "proof", I have actually learned a few things. Wrestling & Springer don't have that much to teach. Although, Drew, it could just be a reflection of my intelligence to begin with! 😱 🙂

[/i]There are ruder people in America.[/QUOTE]

True dat, but getting told off by some blue collar taxi driver or a teenage goth rake doesn't cause a disturbance in The Force the way getting the (metaphorical) finger from an government offical does.

She's an arrogant bitch, too full of her own piss and importance, with less charisma that a wart on your dick and a personality shallower than a saucer. I don't think she often makes a wrong choice, but she seriously needs a figurative slap.

I wonder if the fact that she is being taped for a TV show brings out the "Diva" in her. If those cameras weren't present and she had no audience except for the jury, maybe she wouldn't even be presiding over cases at all. TV cameras bring out the ham in most people.

She's only popular because she's bitchy like that. She isn't fair, she knows it and doesn't care because plaintiffs still want to be on her show to "get on TV". I just ignore it.

I agree with Kitten. The lady is just plain rude. You know it can't be truely real because judges CAN'T act like that in their courtroom. It's a ratings thing. A ploy that is it.

Rude is just an easy way of being controvertial. And we all know (from our checking in on Howard Stern to watch the 'Tickling Chair' segments) that controversy sells.

Good point. Like that shrew on "The Weakest Link." She could give Judge Judy a running for rudeness and self importance.

Ann Robinson.

Ann Robinson, like Simon Cowell, is different though. The show is called "The Weakest Link", to begin with, so people know they are going go get slammed a bit. And a lot of what she says is "just television". It is rather meaningless and meant more for the entertainment for the people watching at home. It's all disposable. Ultimately, too, she holds no position in the public trust.

Judy Judy on the other hand represents "the law" and although she may be retired, as I understand it, what she says is still legally binding. She's acting as an agent of the government, while showing condesending disdain for seemingly everyone. That's the rudeness part. Then I worry that, because of that animosity, she might be truly missing some pertanent points in cases, not withstanding the plaintiff's or defendand's lack of finess in making the points. "Put your pictures down"! "Stop playing with your papers!" Asking witnesses for the defense "You don't really want to get up and tell me anything now do you, after I've had to listen to all of this other nonsense?" It goes beyond rudeness and turns seemingly into offical repression, done with a superior sneer.

Ann Robinson sasses you, you kind of knew it was coming. That's her gimmick and you laugh with it, or you get offended. But you can sass back to her without fear of a real and legally binding retribution. I don't doubt Judy pumps it up a bit for the tv audience, but it feels to me ike it's just TOO much.

So if Judge Judy is here reading this - and my goodness, I just bet she is, dont you? - J, grab the reins!
