Thank you all very much for your answers 🙂 They are definitely the kind of constructive posts that should be the norm here. I generally agree with you three, but there are a few things that I feel I should point out, if you'll let me be the devil's advocate for a moment.
I am no scientist, but I do hold a PhD in another field. I attend conferences regularly, and I am sure it is the same in every specialty: while there is a degree of consensus, there can be huge differences in points of view, from one expert to the other. Someone's point may strike you as blantantly ignorant, shocking or whatever, but it may turn out to be tomorrow's truth. By pushing forward theories, no matter what they sound like, and contributing to the debate, you advance the cause of reason. My point is, we should let people express themselves. Of course when one drops a bomb then stops replying, that is hardly a debate; more like trolling.
"Homosexuality is a mental illness". I don't agree, but still went to look for the incriminating post to see what she had to say to back that up. I was disappointed to find that it was a mere assumption, without any form of justification to it, unless I missed something. But even if that is only her opinion, she is entitled to it. It is only natural to have developped our own theories about anything, based on our observations and system of values.
Another thing that bothers me a little bit is that she may attract a slightly higher degree of hostility out here because she is a self-described conservative. I suspect that she may be the target of what you Americans are calling "a liberal bias" for voicing opinions that go against a certain leftist consensus. I think I have seen fellow conservatives complain about this on the forums. That does not mean her political point of view cannot be challenged nor discussed alongside her other beliefs, in fact it should be. But she must be slightly worried by the amount of flak she receives for voicing them.
Finally, I absolutely do not agree with Wolf on this one. This is an adult forum, and whether or not you actually are an adult, you will be treated as such when you log in here. Therefore, if you just believe anything you read from a so-called scientific authority who could be anyone, it is your fault, not the poster's. We are on the Internet, where it is impossible to verify one's credentials. Someone here, I forgot whom, had a signature saying "I am going to label myself Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile. Because I wrote it on the Internet makes it true", or something along that line. Well if you believe that, I see little hope you for you at any rate. 😉
