Knismolagnia Psychology

I have to admit, I love reading her threads. Mostly because she's so out of touch with reality that it's even quite entertaining.

I like reading her posts too, because she writes interesting stuff. Though I cannot claim to have read a lot of her started threads, as far as I am concerned, she sounds like quite a pleasant and articulate person. Not sure what you mean by that; care to explain, or did you just drop by randomly to troll people?

Basically, she posts things with the authority of a scientists and presents her "findings" as fact, but a lot of the claims are really just opinion or based on nothing at all. In one thread, she claimed homosexuality was a mental disorder. When asked about certain details that seem untrue or confusing, there is usually no response or she abandons the thread entirely.

Well, her - as she calls them - "theories" are nothing more than wishful thinking; and quite ignorant, too. Since I have a degree in the field she claims to be competent with, it's much easier for me to see that whatever she says is as legitimate as belief that the Earth is the centre of the universe because she can't feel it spinning under her feet.
But even besides that, TMF Jeff - I reckon - had pointed out multiple times that her posts have no ounce of legitimacy behind them. And yet she comes back and back with more and more ludicrous statements, apparently hoping that if she repeats it many times enough, it will give her any credentials.

Also, the fact that she still claims (and apparently tries to talk herself into it) that she has the actual background and that her threads are not innocent fantasies (which would be totally cool; we all fantasize about various things), but serious and credible academic research (which I can't help but laugh about).

That being said, I don't really care that she lives in her own ignorant bubble; she can believe whatever she wants - even that ticklishness is induced by gamma rays fired at us by extraterrestrial creatures. For me, it's just entertaining in the same way that all those conspiracy theory believers are.

Did I satisfy your urge for knowledge?

I'd go one step further and say that these "fantasies" of being an expert in neuroscience can actually be harmful. At any given time, there are a number of younger (and perhaps not so young) members and lurkers who are here trying to make some sense of their desires. I'd think for those people, to have someone spouting complete nonsense as a self-professed expert, telling them that this fetish, unlike all others, is hard-wired as a sexual orientation (while claiming homosexuality is a mental illness) is a little more than just self-indulgent bullshit.

Thank you all very much for your answers 🙂 They are definitely the kind of constructive posts that should be the norm here. I generally agree with you three, but there are a few things that I feel I should point out, if you'll let me be the devil's advocate for a moment.

I am no scientist, but I do hold a PhD in another field. I attend conferences regularly, and I am sure it is the same in every specialty: while there is a degree of consensus, there can be huge differences in points of view, from one expert to the other. Someone's point may strike you as blantantly ignorant, shocking or whatever, but it may turn out to be tomorrow's truth. By pushing forward theories, no matter what they sound like, and contributing to the debate, you advance the cause of reason. My point is, we should let people express themselves. Of course when one drops a bomb then stops replying, that is hardly a debate; more like trolling.

"Homosexuality is a mental illness". I don't agree, but still went to look for the incriminating post to see what she had to say to back that up. I was disappointed to find that it was a mere assumption, without any form of justification to it, unless I missed something. But even if that is only her opinion, she is entitled to it. It is only natural to have developped our own theories about anything, based on our observations and system of values.

Another thing that bothers me a little bit is that she may attract a slightly higher degree of hostility out here because she is a self-described conservative. I suspect that she may be the target of what you Americans are calling "a liberal bias" for voicing opinions that go against a certain leftist consensus. I think I have seen fellow conservatives complain about this on the forums. That does not mean her political point of view cannot be challenged nor discussed alongside her other beliefs, in fact it should be. But she must be slightly worried by the amount of flak she receives for voicing them.

Finally, I absolutely do not agree with Wolf on this one. This is an adult forum, and whether or not you actually are an adult, you will be treated as such when you log in here. Therefore, if you just believe anything you read from a so-called scientific authority who could be anyone, it is your fault, not the poster's. We are on the Internet, where it is impossible to verify one's credentials. Someone here, I forgot whom, had a signature saying "I am going to label myself Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile. Because I wrote it on the Internet makes it true", or something along that line. Well if you believe that, I see little hope you for you at any rate. 😉
