The men's magazine Esquire has a column, "Ten Things You Don't Know About Women," which a different guest celebrity woman writes every month. Saturday Night Live's Maya Rudolph wrote the column for the January 2005 issue.

Number 2 on Ms. Rudolph's list of the ten things men don't know about women: "On those nights when we say we're just gonna stay home, we do, but we invite our girlfriends over, put on nighties, and have tickle parties."

OK, let me be the first to actually answer this question. 😉 Yes. I've done this. But, it's been YEARS. We're talking way back when I was living with two other gals. We never did nighties. But, we'd have a few drinks/tokes and tickle the shit out of one another...and anyone else fortunate enough to be with us.

To address the blanket statement apparently made by the magazine... It's like most blanket statements. You'll find some for whom it may be true if you look hard enough. But, overall, it's a load of crap...like most things those "good only for the outhouse" publications dish out.

TklDuo-Ann, thank you for helping me get this thread back on track! I was beginning to feel like I'd crashed my own party.

True, Esquire drifts into Vanity Fair-type tastelessness from time to time. I subscribe to the magazine for the handful of good articles it offers every month. As for Maya Rudolph, I guess being a comic she would not expect the reader to take everything her "Ten Things You Don't Know About Women" contribution 100% seriously. I just wondered if there was at least some truth in what she said! Not that every group of women, or even most of them, ever participate in tickle play. But more than just a few, maybe?

Women are much more touchy-feely with one another than men, after all. Women hold hands, dance together, and kiss, three things you don't see men - at least American men - do often. So the tickle parties would seem feasible, considering the physical closeness of female culture.

It's very true that (in general) women aren't as uptight and homophobic about physical touch as men. We see evidence of this at nearly every tickle gathering there is. When a woman is down, they often have both men and women going at them. When a guy is down, if another guy even lingers near them for too long, things get uncomfortable. Guys won't even consider joining in tickling another guy (unless you happen to be at a foot friends party or something), though they fully expect women to do so with other women.

I'm sure part of this is that more of the guys seem less able to seperate this from sexuality than women. While I respect that fact, I consider it a pity. Tickling is way too much fun to restrict to sexual play only. That's probably a big part of the reason that a lot of guys don't get to enjoy tickle play that often. I, for one, will not play with others who I know can't seperate the two. I only want sexual contact with my hubby, not with a bunch of other people. So, if I know they're seeing it as sexual, I don't play with them...guy or gal doesn't matter.

Well said, Ann. As a gal getting ready for her first gathering experience, I'm glad there's evidence of my opinion on here somewhere. Tickling and sexuality should be two separate things at a gathering.

As for the original subject of this thread, yes, my platonic girlfriends and I had ourselves some ticklefights back in high school. Not so much anymore, though. Course, most of my close friends are guys now. They get some pokes in here and there, but nothing resembling a fight comes out of it. v,ty <- - - hehehe, that would be a message from my cat. . .

Thanks for your thoughtful replies. Women seem to yearn for communication and togetherness, while men seem to go for competition and accomplishments. So it would make sense that women see touch as communication while men see it as a means to an end.

The truth is--and I may get My female membership card revoked for this!--we get together, put sweats on, watch silly 80s movies (anything by John Hughes will do!), and dish about men whilst gorging on Italian, wine, Haagen Dazs, Ben & Jerry's or cookie dough.
