Looks like they'll be charged as adults...

Damn straight... and so they should be. That's totally unspeakable what they did.... I just hope that boy somehow improves 🙁

I know. He's still in critical condition. Very sad.

Agreed. I can't believe that there are some people that are actually UPSET that they're being tried as adults. I'm sorry but at 15, you know the basic "what's right, what's wrong" rules.

Being in Florida, that means they'll get it pretty harsh too, doesn't it? I hope so

Yeah, from what I've read/heard, Florida doesn't BS around when it comes to justice.

I don't believe in the "eye for an eye" concept of justice, but I don't honestly think anyone could convince me that these kids SHOULDN'T be tried as adults. The whole thing seems far too cold-blooded, predicated as it was on the desire to get back at the victim for snitching, to simply be dismissed as a case of boys being boys.

I completely agree they should be tried as adults. Setting that boy on fire was an unspeakable act. The only positive note I've seen in all of this was that he wasn't, at least according to that news report, burned on the face and hands. That should, hopefully, help aid his psychological recovery from the trauma.

They knew what they were doing. If you make a decision like this then you should pay the price. It is very sad that this ever happened.

Good. It's the least they deserve.
Honestly, they should just be beaten to death in front of the courthouse. Fuck them.

Glad to hear it.

Off topic a bit...The fact it was in florida reminded me of the girl who got beat up in florida by a group of girls because she wrote shit about them on myspace and they put it on youtube. Anyone know what happen with that?

Oh I remember that story! I didn't hear the outcome though. Let me see if I can find anything on it........

good.. I dont care what age you are.. do the crime knowing it is wrong.. THEN DO THE TIME

Good!! It is still unbelievable how violent, heartless, stupid etc some people can be... :disgust:

I agree. I just feel so bad for that kid that got burned. His life will be changed forever 🙁

Damn straight! You do something that violent, you deserve to be charged like an adult. Glad to hear this news.

Yes, most certainly they should be tried as adults. And given life in prison without parole if convicted. :Grrr:

I'm not saying they should or should not be charged as adults, but I have a question for those who think they should.

Is the idea that children couldn't have come up with an idea this horrible? If they did do this as the charge alleges, does that demonstrate maturity in some way?

Or is it simply that filing charges as adults means they can be punished more severely, and that's what they deserve whether they're really adults or not?

Naturally as they are children so they can come up with such a horrible idea. They came up with it and actually commited the crime.

For me a case like this isn't so much punishing those who did it as adults because i think they should be. It's more as a deterant in the future. These kids get charged as kids, spend a few months in juvi or do community service. A precedent is set that will not deter such things from happening in the future.

I think you misunderstand the juvenile justice system. Short sentences in juvenile hall or community service are handed down only for very minor crimes. For something like this - attempted murder, arson - a juvenile offender could be sentenced to several years in a youth correctional facility (read: junior prison). In most states, for the most serious crimes juvenile offenders can be held in such facilities until they're 21 years old.

I'm guessing though that that's not deterrent enough. So consider the way kids think. Thinking ahead, considering the consequences, things like that are part of adult thinking. One of the things that makes children "childish" is that they don't do this so well. They can sometimes be deterred by an immediate and well-understood threat ("Dad will ground me for life if I scratch his car"). But often even that isn't enough. The far-off possibility of being sentenced as an adult surely isn't likely to deter the sort of child who would set another child on fire.

So I don't know that the deterrence angle is such a good one.

I happen to think there is no hope for these teenagers at all. They should be locked up forever, whether in adult prison or a junior prison. Another human being was set on fire. That shows complete lack of ANY understanding or caring for another human being.

You're absolutely right. They would most likely end up in a "teen prison". Where they'd have access to televisions/books/video games/computers and such. They'd also be able to have visitors quite often. A youth prison is nothing like a "real" prison. One of my uncles was a corrections officer for both a juvi prison and adult prison.

Teenagers do understand the difference between being grounded by dad and being Bubba's fucktoy for the next 30 years. Sending these kids to an adult prison where they would not be hanging out with other trouble making little bastards would be a deterant. When the far-off possibility of being sentenced as an adult becomes what WILL happen. MOST kids would think twice before commiting a crime similar to this.

Much like school is handled. Do something wrong and get suspended, most kids don't care because they get to spend time home doing whatever they want. Change the suspension to being cut from the football team AND having to then deal with mom and dad who take away the car, cell phone, computer etc. Suddenly fucking around doesn't seem like such a good idea anymore.

Vlad, kids often don't care - or don't think about it - even when the consequences of what they're doing include death.

The problem is that they can't really believe that it will happen to them, even if they see it happen to someone else. Consequences that they have personally faced before, such as the revocation of privileges or other standard punishments, are much more real to kids. Things that only happen to someone else in the news, not so much.

That is why children do stupid things. It's part of what makes them children. I can't believe that you honestly don't understand that.

And to top it all off, you apparently sincerely believe that the sort of young person who would set another young person on fire really looks ahead and cares about the consequences. You really suppose that some other kid will say to himself, "You know, I'd really like to set Tommy Smith on fire until he dies. That'd be cool to watch. But, no, I might go to prison."

Amazing. But, if that's really how you think then I doubt any reasoned argument will convince you otherwise. I suppose I was just hoping for something a little more reasonable - or at least a little more likely - from the people who are saying "hang 'em as high as possible."
